Hawks address safety position

Local radio is reporting, and the Bears website is confirming, that the Hawks have traded their 6th round pick for veteran safety Mike Green. Over the past five seasons, only middle linebacker Brian Urlacher had more tackles among Bears defenders than Green.

  1. This is great news, even if he was "Mr. Irrelevent" in his draft class! What we have here is a plug replacement for Marquand Manuel at worst, and a potential replacement for Ken Hamlin (if he can't go) at best. All for a 6th round choice.

Not to mention, it seems we have a new Seahawks Insider on the ST forum who called this shot before it was public information.

  2. I agree. I'm not sure he is average starter material, as some claim, but he does seem to be a solid guy, a good fit. Did you see that in the last five years, he is 2nd on the team in tackles, trailing only Urlacher? Definitely worth the pick.

I can see why the Bears would let him go, however - When you already have a talented starter for years to come, and this 7 year veteran on the bench, why not go younger, and plan for the future, since he probably won't play anyway?

And I agree, it's cool that we have an insider!

  3. A decent (not outstanding) but a decent move IMHO.
I am not one of those that believe that he is starter material, however, as a replacement for Manuel, he will do a fine job.
Bottom line, is he worth a 6th round pick? In my opinion, yes he most definitely is. Although it's possible that they could have found a diamond in the rough, backup safety, in the sixth round it's extremely unlikely they would have found one better. Of course, the fact that he is a verteran, only makes this less of a crapshoot, more of a sure fire thing.

It appears to me, that the Seahawks are doing everything possible, to fill any and every possible hole, before heading into the draft, so that they can draft best player available, rather than worry about filling needs. This is an approach, monkey likes.

  4. Sounds like a good move the guy can tackle for sure. But i have never seen him play so i don't know how his coverage skills are. Anyways it can't be a bad pick up all we lose is a 6th rounder. Adds good depth and probably takes safety off the list for our first day picks, but anything can happen come draft day.

  5. ESPN reports too that he's under contract for three more years, at or around the $1.4M salary level, so it looks like we'll have a consistent backup for a few more years.

  6. Not necessarily. He can always get cut. If he does, any unpaid bonuses count against Chicago's cap, as I understand it.

Hee, hee. This is a good move.

  7. that may be true, but what I was saying is that if this guy ends up being good, like Manuel, we don't have to worry about losing him to free agency in a year or two.

  8. I get it. I should have known better.

  9. I like this better than whomever they would've likely taken with the pick. Agree with monkey, getting all the slots filled with adequate players, taking BPA in the draft, and finishing up with late FAs and June FAs worked out well last year.

I do hope they trade down from the first, and get another second and a replacement third (or whatever they can get) because from a fans perceived need standpoint, CB and DE depth is good enough this year to get some extra players without losing talent. Remember the Tatupu! Also still believe Law will be a Seahawk this year post draft, whether we get a CB or not.
