Seneca Back in Blue - A $721k Benchwarmer?

Mike Sando reports that QB Seneca Wallace has signed his signed his one-year, $721,600 RFA tender.

It's kind of a bummer, if you ask me. While I am very glad to have him on the team for another season, I feel bad that he hasn't had the playing time that will earn him a bigger paycheck, because the guy's talent should bring him more than $721k in this market. All he needs is the opportunity.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not out standing on a ledge, ready to jump. The guy will make $721,000 this year, for chrissakes. That's a lot of roadside soda cans for me to collect, probably ten years worth. And who know if we will still have soda cans in 2016. Cokes might get beamed right into our gullet. Then what the hell am I gonna do?

The point is, Seneca is a very lucky man, even with his comparitively meager salary. I just think he can do better when given the chance.

Holmgren, get a veteran backup QB in here and break the dude out. He's too good to be holding the clip board.

  1. Good points all.

Seneca is in a tough position because he probably would be best served--purely in terms of getting on the field--by playing a "slash" role. At the same time he has shown enough as a pure QB in pre-season and limited mop up duty to be a solid #2, particularly behind a young starter like Hass who should make all 16 starts barring the unforseen. So the Hawks have all the leverage. Wallace has far more value to Seattle than he does on the market. So Ruskell isn't going to break his neck to find a veteran backup when he already has a solid #2 who has limited value on the market.

The WCO QBs that I can think of off the top of my head, with starting experience (e.g., Garcia, B. Johnson, Dorsey), are already under contract. So something would have to just about fall into Ruskell's lap.

  2. Intriguing is the comment from Holms that even if they do try to work Seneca in as PR/KR/WR he would still remain the #2 QB on the depth chart.

That probably has more to do with the rule that says once you bring in your #3 QB you can't play either #1 or #2 in the game again, than anything else, but it also means we'd be "driving on our spare tire," risking injury to our b/u QB.

That's why I feel that after the June 1 cuts we'll land a vet. backup QB, who will be #3, but will be more "ready" than most team's third-stringer.

Gil Hamden is having a breakout season in NFLE, so that may also make the QB carousel in Cheyney that much more interesting. This may be a make-or-break year for young David Greene, who may find himself an odd man out.

That all being said, I'm happy for Seneca and for the team, because nothing beats consistency, especially at this critical of a position.

Seneca will be more motivated to do anything asked of him, since he's technically now in his "contract year" and all those big leads we'll be building in the first half of games should give him plenty of good playing time this season!

Another factor in this equasion is Skyler Fulton, the WR who is also burning up NFL Europe. If he catches the eye of the FO, and with the sudden glut of WRs on the team, we may not really need Seneca for WR/PR/KR duties afterall.

  3. I dunno. I like Seneca and think he's an okay backup, but I was at the final preseason game against the Vikes last year, and I thought he looked terrible. Granted, he wasn't playing with (m)any of the starters, but I'm more comfortable with him catching passes than thowing them (from the pocket, anyway).

  4. In one of the preseason games last year, he came in and threw a couple of the most beautiful passes I've ever seen. Then he kind of got off his mark. Don't know if it was pressure due to a less-than-srarting-calibre O-line, or missed routes, or what. But the dude can throw!

I suspect if Hass ever should go down (heaven forbid!) that Seneca would come in and play better than the starters on probably half the other teams. And if that scenario should come to pass this upcoming season (heaven forbid!) then Mr. Wallace will make a pretty penny come next spring.

  5. With the Superbowl Runner-Up, Madden Cover and now Chunky Soup curses working against us, we'll take all the qualified backups we can handle!

(good to see the old gang getting back together as we lead up to draft day!)

  6. I love Senneca and what he brings to the table but i would rather have a proven back up QB. Senneca looked great in a couple of preseason games but i really don't have a good evaluation cause he never played with the starting o-line or recievers. He is versatile and very athletic we can keep opposing defenses guessing with him coming into the game as a reciever, QB, with Senneca who needs an Antwan Randal El. Final saying if god forbid Seneca has to replace Matt in a game due to injury i will trust that he can get the job done. I really will.

I don't think David Greene will be the odd man out, he has too much potential.

  7. If someone is available, go for it...but dont just sign a backup just to sign one and put Seneca at WR.

Im sure he will be used a little more this coming season.
