Bloody Thursday Has Begun!

A little ahead of schedule, but the blood is starting to flow in the streets of the NFL, and the heads of big name players have started to roll!

The link above is to the NFL page on ESPN.com, which already has three separate stories about teams releasing marquis players, and two speculatations regarding Warrick Dunn and Will Sheilds.

The Broncos have release three, Trevor Price, Mike Anderson and Jeb Putzier (ok, not everyone released is a household name!)

The Panthers have also release three, Brenson Buckner, Steven Davis and Rod Smart.

And the Bill have released three, former Seahawk Sam Adams, Safety Lawyer Milloy and TE Mark Campbell, but are still trying to restructure things to hold on to Eric Moulds.

No word from the Seahawks yet, but with guys like Buckner and Adams hitting free agency, the price for Rocky should start to deflate, and if the rumor about Sheilds is true, it may effect Hutch's value on the open market.

Not sure how much an impact Anderson, Davis, or "He Hate Me" will have on Shaun's asking price, but the next several days should be VERY interesting!!!

Here's a running list of released players so far:

  3. "In a couple short days, the NFL has gone from the Combine and turned into Columbine!!!  " Thats goin to the quote bucket.

I hope we don't have to release any big names. Besides we are below the cap and all these teams i believe are either above the cap or pretty close to being over it.

  4. 3 worse cap tied teams:

Pryce saves Denver about 8 mill...

  5. Thanks Meeze...every now and then a doozie comes to me!

Yes, all these teams slashing players are well above the cap and need to get under it before midnight tomorrow, thus Bloody Thursday.

And at the risk of going to the pun closet too often, I guess for Denver, the Pryce was WRONG!

  6. This is a little tidbit of salary cap information from Mr. Peter King of si.com. This is just a little tidbit from a longer article so i hope i'm not breaking any copyright laws. I have also said it is from Peter King.

Assuming a new deal doesn't get done this week, and assuming the cap will be $95 million, here are the teams with the most money available entering the free agent market, according to salary-cap documents as of late last week:

    1. Minnesota: $24.1 million 2. Arizona: $23.6 million 3. Green Bay: $20.7 million 4. Cleveland: $20.1 million 5. San Diego: $17.4 million 6. San Francisco: $16.5 million 7. Baltimore: $16.1 million 8. Seattle: $15.7 million 9. Jacksonville: $15.3 million 10. Cincinnati: $14.0 million 11. St. Louis: $11.1 million 12. New Orleans: $10.5 million

Teams in trouble? The Raiders are $29.9 million over the projected cap. (Getting down won't be impossible because of easily erasable contract-inflating clauses, such as the $8 million bonus due to wideout Ronald Curry. Such a bonus can be canceled and Curry, should he choose to stay, would sign a near-minimum contract, counting for an $8.4 million savings for Oakland.) The Jets have to shave $29.2 million and started doing so late in the week by rejiggering the contracts of heavy-money guys like Curtis Martin. Kansas City ($120.2 million), Washington ($120.2), Denver ($119.6 million), Tampa Bay ($109.6 million), Tennessee ($109.5 million) and Atlanta ($108.0 million) need to see the light. And fast.

  7. Last thing I heard was that cutting Sharper would give us another 3.3 mil. I think he's gone, but who knows, right?

  8. I have heard that the 3.3M cap savings is mistated, and the Seahawks don't have to release anyone, since we're already under the cap, unless we sign Hutch or Shaun to a LT deal before midnight tomorrow, which I don't see happening.

  9. They definitely don't have to release anyone, last I saw, they were at around 81 million, which would put them at about 13 million under the cap, depending on which number they agree on.

I think cutting Sharper might be a good idea though. The cap savings could be used to sign Hutch and Shaun, and the defense did pretty well without him. I think that they could draft a decent backup if needed.

  10. Should they drop Sharper, a guy they could look at is Bobby Carpenter, a LB in the draft...he is extremely good, and might not fall to us, as im hearing that LBs will be popular this year early on...but Carpenter is a great LB...but hes overshadowed by AJ Hawk...

Read some of his profiles if you can...could fit well with us...

Oh, and the Seahawks only release someone if the value vs. money is too far apart...Sharper might fit that bill...or he may be aske dto restructure...im not sure...really, I think people will get cut if Seattle needs money to sign draftees...like Sando said over on his site...Seattle is one of the best teams at working with money

  11. might need another LB to be honest...as there is a pretty good Te in the draft named Vernon Davis...

he wont fall past the Rams...and id be stunned if they passed him up...the question is whether he makes it that far...he had a great combine, which might not translate to the NFL greatly...but if he turns into a stud, we're gonna need someone to cover him twice a year : )

  12. From Mike Sando's Blog:

As we look at the Seahawks' fattest cap numbers for 2006, we notice that the two biggest cap figures belong to the guys who should be receiving that kind of money: the starting QB and starting LT, Pro Bowl starters both. Matt Hasselbeck and Walter Jones count a combined $16 million against the 2006 cap by my accounting. The next four highest cap figures belong to Grant Wistrom ($5.83M), Sharper ($4.5M), Andre Dyson ($4.26M) and Darrell Jackson ($3.83M). Dyson stands to collect a $3 million roster bonus, so his status might be worth monitoring. But the Hawks have so much cap room that they could carry Dyson's number just to give themselves a starting-caliber option at a key position.

With so many other teams facing cap problems and with accomplished veterans hitting the market every day, the Seahawks appear to be in strong position to re-sign their own key free agents. I would not expect there to be a long line of teams ready to outbid the Seahawks on RB Shaun Alexander or LG Steve Hutchinson, at least not in the current climate. Seattle is in better position than most other teams to pay these guys.

  13. I love Vernon Davis, but I don't think he'll even fall to St. Louis. i think he may sign with another division rival, here in AZ. If there's not a top notch OL available, I think that Vernon Davis is going to be wearing the AFL style red and white.

  14. When this is all over, I have a feeling us Seahawks fans are going to have a good laugh.

We are in great cap shape, and should be able to fill holes as necessary because of it. I'm not a cap expert at all, but I won't be surprised if one of these names ends up in Seattle.

At the very least we'll be able to keep our team together from last year, and I can't wait for this season to start.

  15. This is a win-win situation for teams like Seattle who are already significantly under the cap.

First, it floods the market, which should make it easier to resign your own free agents, at discount prices.

Second, it closes many teams out of free agency all together, those who have to cut key players just to get under the salary cap, so it allows you to cherry pick the casualties from the those teams, again at discount prices.

Hmmm, maybe THIS is why the owners are playing hardball with the union on the CBA?

  18. Paulie - exactly...its just easier to say he wont fall past #11 in the draft :)

Everyone - Apparently, the Jaguars are the only playoff team with a ton of cap like us...see we're like the Yankees and Red Sox...except fair...the rich get richer...and after the Jags got Meier back, that should take a lil more off their cap room...

Arizona, Cleveland, Minnesota are in greater shape however...though none are playoff teams (Minnesota took advantage of a piss poor division...)...

its pretty awesome knowing that about half the teams in the league will be worse next year no matter what they do...unless they make a miracle draft...and very few teams will improve for next year---us being one of them...if we need any extra money, Sharper could be cut, maybe Wistrom or Dyson could restructure...but it might not even come to that

and someone jump that guy over at Sando's place for saying we should cut DJack and sign TO...sorry guys, DJack is better overall (top 8 WR)...TO has been overrated for a long time...(top 9-15 WR)

  19. I bet the Titans are happy they dodged a major bullet...they already developed a ton of young guys for them last year...other teams are going to be forced to do so this year

Hell, the Titans might get to 7-9 or 8-8 next year! Not saying they're good...but they should be able to leapfrog a ton of descending teams...lol crazyness!

I just want Hutch signed long term...and Manuel locked up...everyone else...YAY

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gotta disagree w/ you, adp. TO is the more talented WR: Bigger, better speed, better hands (DJack probably runs better routes, though). The reason not to sign TO is that he's a f---ing cancer.

  21. Let's not hijack this into a TO thread now!!!

The Titans have pulled a rabbit out of their hats to keep McNair and avoid his $50M bonus this year.

Just heard from a friend who is a Jets fan that Kevin Mawae has been cut too.

  22. Mawae? wow...very good center...might be the best in football (though im very partial towards LeCharles Bentley simply because of his first name...and the fact thats hes a chef...Chef LeCharles...heh, never gets old)

    er-erm.

Not to hijack the TO thread, but I have to disagree with the better hands...and part of being a great player includes off the field too...dont get me wrong, im not cocky because Jackson is in blue---im not even that big on JJ though hes pretty cool---but TO complains to the point where he gets every ball thrown his way...hes solid, but I dont thik hes top 10...in fact im more on the side of TO is overrated then Jackson is underrated

: ) first disagreement in a long time...i enjoyed it Uff!

  23. Few More To add:

Will Shields-KC-G (Wants to re-sign with them, killing his bargaining power)
    La Roi Glover-DAL-DT
    Willie Blade-DAL-DE
    Eric Warfield-KC-CB
    Dexter McCleon-KC-CB
    Shawn Barber-KC-LB
    Mike Furrey-STL-S
    Brady Smith-ATL-DE

You know, watching these teams being so desperate really makes me realize how fortunate we are...im very appreciative of things going the way they have for us

  24. Can you imagine the trouble we'd be in if Whitless was still the GM???!!! I shudder to think of it!
