Breaking News: Shaun Alexander Agrees To EIGHT Year Deal

From Fox Sports:

FOXSports.com has learned that the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms with Pro-Bowl running back Shaun Alexander on a whopping eight-year, $62 million deal that includes a total of more than $15 million in the first year in bonuses (signing and roster) and salary.

The Alexander deal is not contingent upon a new CBA getting done as the Seahawks have the necessary cap space to make such a move. However, the contract still has to get approved by the NFL front office and Alexander needs to sign the contract.

This is interesting!!!

SIDE NOTE: The Seahawks have tendered their RFA's with the one-year, $712,000 tenders. Those include SENECA WALLACE, JOSH BROWN, and surprisingly, WAYNE HUNTER

  2. Nothing on Hutch yet thought? Are we going to let him sample what other teams are going to offer first?

Very pleased about Shaun and the CBA potentially getting done today

  3. Isn't this just a rumor? Thius is after all coming out of NY right? Where'd they get the info?

We've been hearing rumors like this all season, why is this one more believable?

    Just asking.

  4. Mostly the timing of it Vin, it makes sense all around to sign him, and since we're close to the deadline for free agency, it would make sense to get it done now.

  5. I think signing Shaun without letting him sample the market is a bad idea, perhaps we could get him for less if he realizes he has no where else to go.

  6. Vinny's got a gun...

ok seriously, in contrast to Vin's point, maybe Shaun caved first...because he knows the market will be rough...

  7. And also yeh, I was a little hesitant putting it up here since its from a NY Reporter...

Sando has confirmed nothing has been agreed...but that doesn't mean they are close...

    ReplyDelete
  8. aren't close*

Sando has it as a prediction from the guy, but really the only prediction the guy made was that it would be final before tomorrow...

    We'll see...

  9. That's the only thing that makes sense(Shaun caving first). Otherwise why sign him prior to the CBA getting done?

  10. Man, today keeps getting better. My school (Southern Illinois) wins the MVC, I go to Hooters, and we re-sign Shaun Alexander.

    Its fantastic being me.

    VINNY'S GOT A GUN...

  13. Sorry ADP, didn't notice you changed the text of the main post. Wasn't this just initially aobut the rumor in the NY paper?

Anyhow, I hope (and expect) that a lot of that money is backloaded in years 6, 7 and 8, which he'll probably never see as he retires a Seahawk!

  14. Yup...and no, you beat me to it technically...I was too busy celebrating by myself, and watching the Sonics game...finally changed the post though...

SONICS ARE WHIPPING ASS...so far, good day...

BUT...keep in mind, Fox Sports likes to jump the gun...and I forgot you can sign players for more then 7 years in real life football...on the games, 7 year is the max...

  18. Now i can by my Alexander jersey. I didn't wanna pay for one and then for him to not be with us. This is really good news. Get Hutch signed and then we can worry about defense, defense, and more defense.

  21. I re posted my pointless post to show off expression so when I look back through the archives, I could see this moment's reactions... :) (thats just an excuse...I stretched the margins dont like having my posts deleted)

KeyArena announced it in front of the Sonic crowd near the end of the game, as a reporter who updates during gametime said...and fgot a huge reaction...

Sonics finished off Utah, 113-81...Gonzaga also held off San Diego in overtime to run their home win streak to 39 games...

BE APPRECIATIVE, guys, as we're being spoiled today...worry about the money and years tomorrow...soak it up for now...and pray for Kirby Puckett, too...

  22. Earlier tonight I clicked on NFL Network and they were rerunning the Game of the Week - our playoff win over the Panthers - and Jerramy made about 4 or 5 HUGE catches in that game, including the first TD that started the rout.

So, please let's not kill the guy for having a bad day in a big game...or I'll have to start calling you JOEY!!!

  23. lol nice!...way I see it, noone bashes TO for dropping the ball consistently...so im not going after Stevens for the SB...the refs were sposed to call it fair...and they didnt...even if we won, the SB was tainted, and I blame them

That said...happy day for RBs...AHMAN GREEN RESIGNED FOR ONE YEAR WITH PACKERS...

5 top RBs...Foster, Alexander, Green, Lewis, and Edge...3 resigned...Lewis I dont like, and Edge is the one that was mistreated by his former team...wasnt wanted, and I hope Edge goes somewhere and has a great career.

  24. I can't describe how happy I am about this. It's no secret that Shaun is my favorite Hawk since Largent (I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to name our first kid Largent Alexander). Now, I can change my rallying cry to our next big signing.

    SIGN HUTCH!!!

  25. Hopefully, news like this will draw JoSCh out of his post SB funk and he'll start posting again. It's never too soon for Shaun to start winning the Best Running Back of the Week award, is it?

  26. I don't know the specifics of the deal (just what's rumored) but Shaun's agent says it's the richest ever for an NFL running back.

  27. I am happy that Shaun signed. I too am curious about the terms though. I don't mind the big money as long as there are performance incentives in it and it is not too front loaded so that we spend all our cap money on one player and have nothing left for the other FA's and any draft picks we get. I don't like the idea of cutting a lot of good productive veterans to make room for lower cost draftees. I understand that a lot of veterans usually get put out of the league through FA but this year is different in that some of these guys out there still have some good years in them.

I can't wait for the terms to come out. For now, I will sigh though - one more worry checked off the list this year.

    Hawkman.

  28. Well, one special little thing, die hards know about FA:

When the big one goes down...the dominos start falling into place.

Manuel needs to be next...then sign Mack Strong for 8 years too!!! Hes a pro bowler damnit!!! Didn't you see his juke moves in the playoffs??!?!?! : D

  29. I agree with you adp, with one special addition. Hutch needs to be signed. if we sign too many people before him, some other team can swoop in and offer Hutch more than we'll have available.

  30. ARGH paulie...when I typed that, I was thinking the same thing, but underestimated everyone's wisdom around here by leaving it out there...

You said it exactly like I thought too...if use our money up quickly...teams will know we cant match and yeh...you're right...

I just figured Hutch was a given : )...and thanks for the Warren/Warner info!

    We tendered our RFAs...

  33. I want them to resign Jurivicius even more than Manuel.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wayne Hunter? Well, I guess we all know what they did with the $600k they saved by not franchising Hutch! Where did the RFA news come from ADP?

  35. I'd be surprised if they keep Seneca for that little though, there's got to be a team out there who needs a good backup QB and that's willing to pay more than $712,000 right?

    Posted by PaulieP

    ReplyDelete
  36. Problem is though Paulie, they gotta give up draft pick to sign a RFA from us, that's the "restricted" part. Don't see anyone willing to do that with QBs like Kerry Collins and Jon Kitna on the open market.

  37. Good point. I forgot all about the draft pick.

  41. HOLY CRAP

I'm glad we signed Shaun, but who thinks we overpaid? I think we need four very good years out of him to make the bonuses worth the expense.

I'm happy, but I'm nervous, like I just bought a used Ferrari by taking a second mortgage on my house.

It better get me laid and go really, really, fast!

    Posted by Bluefoot

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good analogy Bluefoot!

I think we'll need to wait to see the particulars of the deal to see how much it actually "costs", but we all knew he was going to get a 4-5 year deal minimum, and the last 3 years of this thing are probably fantasy money anyway.

Just remember that Ruskell and Reinfeldt wouldn't sell the team up the river.

So gas up that Ferrari and buy something nice for the wife from Victoria's Secret, cuz we're heading to Miami in February to consummate the deal we should have slammed in Detroit!

  43. Still not on .com... but I guess it's early there. Re- the post drought, I just didn't have anything to say, I'm still a bit disillusioned about the last game. I was however able to do a bunch of yardwork not caring about the NFL, so thats good. Anyway, this is good news, and I agree with everyone, this was an ego deal, the 8 year, 62Mil part, the reported guaranteed is actually a bit small, I guess the market wouldn't bear him out. Good for us, and really, probably what he's worth.

  46. Pretty cool how the FO gave Shaun a big enough deal so he is the highest paid back, like he wanted...but really we all know he wont be when its all said and done

Im sure Shaun and his agent weren't naive...they probably figured it out...and Shaun still accepted...thats pretty awesome...he just wanted another record, thats all : )

  47. All he said was he wanted was a deal that was FAIR, but nobody believed him.

I firmly believe that he's such a devote Christian, he couldn't lie even if it was to manipulate his contract situation in the press.

I believe that Shaun is an honest and decent human being, who is unbelievably gifted, and not ashamed to reap the benefits of those gifts.

  48. Eight Year deal? Dang, I misread that.

I thought it was an "Eighty Ear" deal.

Good thing these contracts are non-guaranteed, unlike MLB. Eighty Ears is a lot to give a 30-year-old RB...

    ReplyDelete
  49. PP - I know some people start losing their hearing as they get older, but do you really think a 30 year old needs 78 more EARS?
