How Much Is Your Ashworth?

According to Mike Sando and KFFL, the Seahawks have agreed to terms with Patriots Tackle Tom Ashworth, best known for his VISA commercials with Tom Brady. To answer the parenthetical question above, it's a a 5-year deal reported to be paying him $4.5M in the first year. Here's Sando's take on him:

A veteran of 30 regular-season starts in four NFL seasons, Ashworth also started at right tackle in Super Bowl XXXVIII against Carolina. Panthers LDE Julius Peppers finished that game with two tackles, no assists and no sacks, for what that might be worth (and those things are generally worth quite a bit to offensive linemen, given that they generally get attention only when the bad guys get the best of them).

The wild speculation can now begin about where Ashworth will play, Right Tackle or Left Guard, and where the other guys will fill in. Suffice it to say, the only position on the O-line that is locked up seems to be Walter Jones' Left Tackle spot. All the others are now officially up for grabs.

So, if the moves the Seahawks front office have made over the past two seasons weren't evidence enough that they're trying to emulate the Patriot's blueprint on becoming a modern day dynasty, Mr. Ashworth has just provided a 6-foot, 6-inch, 305 pound heap of "identify theft assistance!"

  4. Cant be realist...hes too busy crying over us taking Peterson before he ghot to Miami, AND that the Dolphins haven't talked to Arrington in awhile since he asked for way more than they want to pay

    Ok, about Ashworth.

Im gonna say it: I prefer Locklear over Ashworth...Locklear had solidified himself as one of the top RTs in football...id put Ashworth at G...thing is, I dont Willis to be a 4th string T...I really like him and think he could turn into a monster...either Ashworth or Locklear should be converted...and with RT more important than Gs, Locklear should stay where he is...

And one more thing regarding Locklear, he is already proven. Hes taken on several top DEs/OLBs in the NFL and was affective against them (Strahan, Little, Peppers, and others)

  6. What I have liked about the off-season so far:

    1. The front office hasn't been afraid to shake things up.

I think one factor that plays into the Superbowl loser's hangover is the feeling that you start the next season where you left off the last. (The biggest factors are injuries and free agent defections. That has plagued the non-New England SB winners too.) Like you said Albany, only Walter Jones is assured of a spot. Nobody else is absolutely sure. I kinda like that.

    2. The front office has the right approach to free agency.

Priority 1 is to keep your own guys. It's definitely "cheaper to keep her" in the NFL for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it works out (e.g., Alexander, Peter Warrick). Sometimes it doesn't (e.g., Hutch, JJ). That's the nature of the market. Priority 2 is due diligence on players who can put you over the top. BUT... make sure they fit what you do at the right price. I'd say the Peterson signing falls squarely into that category, as does the pursuit of John Abraham. Priority 3 is finding the right mid-level signees. Ashworth not only brings quality but he brings the right kind of experience.

    Have a good weekend gang!

p.s. Anyone planning on doing a mock draft?! I was kicking around the idea.

  8. if you wanna do a mock draft, go ahead Dave...i love mock drafts, and though i tend to read a ton of scouting reports to get ideas from the draft, I dont think I would be able to put together a quality one...maybe the first round, after that...my ideas may get exagerrated

  12. we are loaded at 0-line. can't wait till training camp and pre-season let the battles begin. Ashworth and Jones by eachother would be sick. Who knows he might be replacing Ryan Hannam as the blocking TE.

  15. Commenting on all, in order. First. You. Have. To. Put. A. Period. Between. Each. Word. To. Get. The. Proper. Effect. You fricking dill-hole.

Second, if you screw up a zinger on the first try, it appears desperate to throw out the correction. You make me sad for the future, I'm certain you were edu-ma-cated in US schools.

I trust whomever plays best at any given position will win that job. I'll trust the coaches on this one. I like the bringing in of SB winners, adds perspective.

I'm pissed I missed out on the cheesy Visa jokes... who doesn't love a fastball down the pipe.

Mock NFL drafts are impossible to do. However Dave, I do enjoy viewing others. Here  is a great database of them. I still enjoy mocking other things, but agree with Blue, and frankly I don't want my beer getting attitude or running from me crying, so I always talk as nice to my beer as possible.

Karl Malone? The basketball player? WTF does he know? Shogun of Harlem has great points though. Phuck Tom Brady. Hass is a sexy beast. Bring on Diners Club commercials... :-(

    Blocking TE, LOL.

    No, you filthy whore.

I like this Smot Poker. They funny. But any kids out there reading, just say "No" to drugs, Nancy Reagan told me to tell you that.

  17. I know that most people only know Ashworth from his commercials, but I actually am reminded of Pete Kendall, when I watch Ashworth play. He has that same bulldog mentality that Kendall did for us, he may not be an overwhelming talent, but he is smart and hard nosed.
Also, he has played guard before, so I really think he will be a naturla fit on that LG side.

To me, this move will get less press than the Burleson one, and a lot less than Peterson, but it will prove out to be an even more important pickup than Burleson, though not as important as Peterson, but not by much.
