FREE AGENCY DELAYED 3 MORE DAYS!

From ESPN.com...

NEW YORK -- A few hours after NFL owners voted to continue their standoff with the players' union, the league extended its deadline for free agency by three days and resumed talks.

The breakthrough came with a mutual agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association Thursday afternoon.

Without a new deal, teams that expected a cap about $10 million higher would have to cut players to become cap compliant, casting more players onto the market, but leaving little cap space to sign them. That deadline has been pushed back until 6 p.m. ET Sunday.

Now, there is a little breathing room to try to do a deal.

  1. Looks like they are trying to get in some extra negotiating for a new CBA and if not give teams time to evaluate there salary caps.

I doubt anything big will happen for the Hawks in terms of re signing our own playersbut then maybe Ruskell & Reinfeldt can work their magic once again. This will just be a wait and see game.

  2. I'm still hoping that the Dyson and Sharper releases are in preparation of inking a deal with Hutch, Shaun or Rocky.

  3. "IF" I were a bettin' man, I'd say that after the quick (and unanimous) decision by the owners today they realized that they really were not ready to cut their salaries down to cap level today. Therefore the owners bought more time to study their rosters and figure out how to restructure what they could, threaten who they could and then cut whomever the veterans that don't comply on Sunday. This way they have three days to twist arms like McNair, etc.

I believe I can be proved right with the number of veterans restructuring their contracts over the next day or two to save cap money.

The thing that confounds me the most about all this is where are those veterans who stand to lose the most? They are surprisingly quiet. I'm talking about the Sharpers, and Moulds, Pryce and James etc who have good productive years but are being farmed into one of the most competitive markets in recent memory. Many of these guys are going to take major cuts in pay IF they can get a pay check at all. If this thing goes to Monday without an agreement being reached, there will be many a careers end prematurely. How is that looking out for the "players"?

    just my .02 worth.

  4. Hawkman - welcome to the site...good posts!

Nobody ever thinks it's gonna happen to them, and the when it does, it's too late to do anything about it as you're yesterday's news.

Funny thing. I was watching ESPN and they were interviewing Takeo Spikes who is the Bills alternate Union rep because the primary player rep for the Bills was Lawyer Milloy, who had been cut!

If HE couldn't see it coming, then who else is gonna?

  5. Alba,

What would be real funny is to have all the teams cut their "primary" union rep and put them all on the FA market to save "salary cap." See how fast Upshaw gets an agreement done then. If that don't work, cut the "new" primary and so on and so forth..... LOL That would bring a definate smile to my face.

Thank you also for the compliment above. Your post also gave me the idea of cutting the union reps.
