Adam Shefter on NFL.com confirmed that the offer sheet that Steve Hutchinson signed with the Vikings indeed includes a "poison pill" making it virtually impossible for the Seahawks to match.
The $50 million offer sheet that Hutchinson signed Sunday with the Vikings includes a provision dictating that he be the highest paid offensive lineman on his team this season -- or the entire $50 million contract becomes fully guaranteed, according to someone who has seen the offer sheet. Well, Seattle offensive tackle Walter Jones averages $7.5 million per year, while Hutchinson's contract pays him an average of $7 million per year.
So if Seattle matched Hutchinson's offer sheet, it not only would have to figure out how to squeeze in this year's $13-million-plus salary-cap figure, but it also would have to guarantee a whopping $50 million to Hutchinson, making it the richest cash contract in NFL history by a cool $15 million.
While I understand the Front Office had their own fiscal objectives in mind when choosing to place the Transition tag on Hutchinson, it was also a good faith gesture to avoid the acromony and protracted contract impasses and holdouts that usually accompany the use of the Franchise tag.
Hutchinson, who usually espoused a desire to remain in Seattle then took that good faith, whittled down the tip, and stuck it right into the collective backs of the Seahawks organization.
The deal, devised by Hutchinson's agent Tom Condon, makes it exceedingly difficult for the Seahawks to match. One person involved in the composition of the offer sheet predicted the Seahawks cannot match it; the ramifications would be way too severe.
Thanks to this little underhanded manuever, I no longer think that the loudmouthed midget known as Drew Rosenweasel is the slimiest agent operating in football.
I also think it's truly ironic that the guy everyone thought would bolt town in a heartbeat, or bend the Seahawks organization over a barrell demanding to be the highest paid player at his position, Shaun Alexander, is the one who signed a reasonably priced, cap friendly deal to stay in town. While the quiet and reserved hulk of an offensive lineman, who everyone thought would be true to his word and dedicated to the franchise, is the one who turns out to be the money grubbing egotist.
I hope the $17M that we're currently under the cap allows us to sign two or three good free agents that we have our eyes on, while we make the Vikings twist for 7 days waiting for an answer.
And while I'd never wish injury on a player, or any human being for that matter, I'm hoping that the Vikings contiue to suck and that they never even get a sniff of the playoffs during the tenure of this contract. As a matter of fact, I hope Hutchinsuck has to play every stinking down on offense, as they wallow in mediocrity for the next seven years.
But most of all, I can't wait until Walter Jones and our new left guard "whoever" are blowing open truck-width holes for Shaun Alexander, as he puts up a 200 yard game on Minnesota when they visit Qwest field next Fall.
So, for an illustration on how I now feel about one of the previously well liked Seahawks, or for the message that this deal is sending to any GM who feels the need to bargain with his players on good faith, click the picture of Hutchinsuck above.
GO SEAHAWKS!!!
Im waiting until Sando or O Neil reports it as confirmation, as everyone outside those two really don't know much about the Seahawks and their organization...
ReplyDeleteThat said, if the poison pill is in the contract...
Like i said in the other thread earlier today or late yesterday...Hutch had to ink the contract and knew what he was doing...money or not, you really screwed our team---the team that drafted you
The agent can also lick my asshole for obvious reasons
I also blame the league for allowing such a thing in the contract...thats a totally cheap thing, similar to putting in a cheat code in a video game...unbelieveable
As for Shaun, I knew he was legit...I have christian backgrounds, and when you see a strong faith, you can just see it---Shaun had that aura...or spotlight over him...so I never questioned whether he was lying about staying here or not...hes been honest with us since day one...wanted to stay here, wanted the record deal, and likes his name in the history book (everyone else feels the same way...but they lie about it)
The interesting thing is, McKinnie will be a free agent eventually, and he will command more than Hutch...so if they resigned McKinnie, the Hutch contract kicks in and bites them
Karma is a bitch, Minnesota...you will get yours...I PROMISE
ADP, while I commend your allegance to Sando and the Seattle beat writers, I think when it's posted on NFL.com, by their main player correspondant, and repeated on the NFL Network, then it's gotta be true.
ReplyDeleteAnd are you a big a fan of "My Name Is Earl" as I am?
You can't mess with Karma!

never saw that show at all...except previews...im usually gone during primetime
ReplyDeleteas for the NFL network...the same ones who said our star receiver was Dexter Jackson?...the same ones who said we play in a dome?
they're entertaining...but inaccurate...granted its obvious the two guys i mentioned are the main ones...but at least they haven't reported anything inaccurately...Sando is still scratching his head over it, despite Adam's comments
either way...im mad at our FO...they took a risk, and at first it didnt sound stupid, but obviously it turned out to be stupid
again, im not calling for Hutch's head yet...i did find it weird when Shaun tried to get him to hold the NFC Championship trophy, Hutch clearly seemed disinterested
amazing, the Packers get away with tampering (surprise! the league doesnt care!), and now Minny is getting away with some stupid clause noone knew existed until yesterday (surprise! the league doesnt care!)
im rooting for the Lions next year in that division!...they were my favs of the four anyways...

ReplyDeleteI WOULD HOPE THE ENTIRE CITY WOULD SUFFER BUT I HAVE SOME FAMILY THERE BUT THEY ARE EAGLES FANS.
BUT THEY ARE EAGLES FANS
ReplyDeleteSo what you're saying is, they've suffered enough??!!

I would think that the league would be interested in this, since it is a legal 'end-around' the tag. In reality, any player can use a similar clause to effectively nullify the tag. It'll be interesting to see if the NFL approves the contact. It may not fly if 'boo' thinks it's against the interests of the NFL.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand - Something is not right here, though:
WHY would an agent invent a deal that would effectively nix the team he's coming from? Why would an agent want to make a deal that actaully decreases the options?
Did Hutch want to make sure he was out of Seattle in any case? Did he actaully think that, as a guard, he had a chance of getting paid more than the most dominant lineman in the NFL, Big Walt? I doubt it.
I can only think that it is something that the agant laid on the table as a bargaining chip, effectively guaranteeing his arrival to the Vikings' camp. It only seves the interests of Minnesota, and of Hutch if it gives him a bigger payday.
Pricks. I'm getting a beer.
That's a clever antidote, C/K, although it would probably be hard to get big Walt behind it. For certain, it would be poetic justice, especially if you even gave him a little extra 'kicker' in there for doing it.
ReplyDeleteBut this pure one-upmanship would result in at least a little bad blood, I would think. And playing games like that doesn't set a good tone for future deals with other players that may be willing to deal in good faith.
I also agree with you on the need to tone it down in here. Wishing injury to other players is not what we're about on this site. Sure, we're spirited, but we need to draw the line when it comes to that stuff. When we get a screw job, we bitch and whine with class.
As far as calming hobbies, I've found that drawing titties on sticky notes and putting them in the reverend's Bible is a welcome diversion.
i wouldnt mind seeing Hutch's reaction if we DID match
ReplyDeletei dont feel like sitting through another interview with Hutch saying 'i felt it was time to move on' or any other cliche
again, like one of the above said...its a cheap move from all parties involved, and im even holding our FO partly responsible...his agent, our FO, him, Minny, the NFL...all responsible
but in our FO's defense, they offered him 5.8 mill a year before FA, which is ridiculous for a G...im shocked he didnt sign it...all the more reason that he may want out of Seattle...turning down a huge contract to test FA, knowing you will probably be tagged, so you do the one manuever around the TTag so you are all but guaranteed to leave...
...i think its clear...he wants out of Seattle.
that explains it...the man didnt wanna talk contract the whole year, which is understandable...but it figures he never said anything along the lines of 'i want to stay here' or 'i want a deal to get done after the season'...Shaun Alexander said its twice a day...Hutch---NEVER
i think he wanted out...im curious if Seattle's matches whether there is a poison pill or not...what his reaction would be
the thing that makes my theory shaky is...why would he chose MINNESOTA?...unless hes got family there, i dont get it...maybe he was all about the money?
hell, i think the poison pill was made up...can anyone name one other scenerio involving the poison pill?...raise your hand if you knew it existed before FA started this year.
thing is...if he really doesnt wanna be here...ill despise him...but at the same time, i wont be as hurt by his loss...last thing i want on our team is a person who dont wanna be there
good to know Trufant prolly wont pull this bullshit next year, being hes from Washington

We all need to calm down. We have one reporter's speculation that the idea for the contract came from Hutch's agent. It just as easily could have come from the Vikings. And let's quit with the tampering complaints. Again I say, if you think that the Hawks are saints when it comes to free agency rules, you're kidding yourself. I won't go as far as saying if you don't cheat you're not trying, but I will say that it's naive to think that only one or two teams are "tampering". As far as Hutch never saying that he wanted to come back this next season, who asked him? Everyone assumed he was coming back, in fact, everyone assumed he was going to be franchised, so no one asked him. This deal still needs to be approved by the NFL, if the NFL thinks it's not fair, they won't approve it.
ReplyDeleteAnd we really need to stop the "everyone is against the Seahawks" attitude. It's making us out to be a bunch of Boston fans, whining about how the world is against us and everyone is out to screw us over. The Superbowl is over, just about every team in the NFL "tampers", and if a player has a reason that they want to leave, it may be legit! Maybe Hutch thinks looks at the praise that Jones gets and wants to see if he can get the same praise! Maybe he wants to be the leader on an O-Line, when it's clear that in Seattle he's number 3 (behind Jones and Tobeck). We don't know his reasons, if he really does want to get out of Seattle, all we do know is that he's a great player who contributed to the Hawks making a Superbowl. I for one will not start crucifying him now.
Posted by PaulieP
Start fitting Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson for a Minnesota Vikings. is the first line in Schefters article... they don't have editors there?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my thoughts are that he does want out of Seattle, and he will be out. I also think that his production is going to drop off, certainly his running back won't have very good yards, as his running backs are all light WCO types, and Childress is a WCO guy. He'll be doing lots of pass blocking... for Brad Johnson.
I would like to hear the real deal on what this "poison pill" actually is, is it for the length of the contract, is it o-line only, etc.
So goodbye Hutch, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Posted by JoSCh
And Paulie... if we need a voice of reason we'll ask, ok pal? Recommence the moaning!
ReplyDeletePosted by JoSCh
I'm in the Citizen K/Paulie P camp. If -- and for now let's stress the IF -- Hutch is the bad guy he appears to be, AND the poison pill is true AND the contract doesn't get nixed, then we should wish him a career of brilliant mediocrity, of being a great player on a team that never sees a championship trophy. We needn't wish him injury.
ReplyDeleteUntil then, take a deep breath and think about the players we can get with the extra cap space.
Posted by Uff
I tend to agree, Uff, Paulie, C/K. But he will be missed, if true. The brilliance of this OL is how well it performed as a unit. It's going to take a while to get the line back to this level, should he depart. It's going to affect the offense in a lot of small ways, esp. Hasselbeck.
ReplyDeleteHere's to Hutch going bye-bye and the NFL imposing draft pick penalties to the Vikes for jerking around with the transition tag, and the Seahawks drafting a couple of defensive studs that the Vikings wish they had.
Posted by Bluefoot
No matter who came up with the deal, Hutch signed it knowing it would screw the Seahawks. Clearly he wants out of Seattle. Perhaps he's tired of being in Walter Jones' superhuman shadow. Who knows. The Seahwaks went out of their way to try an work a deal, giving him the Transition tag as a show of good faith. He signed a deal that screws the Seahawks. I don't blame the front office at all. In fact, I'm impressed that they were willing to be so reasonable and accomodating. If it means they get screwed by Hutch, it shows everyone else in the league that the 'Hawks are a team that can be trusted and will treat their players right. See Hamlin and Urban as other examples of good faith.
ReplyDeleteNo, the bad character in all this seems to be one guy. So hutch Fuckinson. As your new team sucks year after year, just vent your frustrations on those famous lake cruises.
Posted by highwatermark
i dont see how being annoyed about something illegal like tampering is whining...and i still have not seen one example of the Seahawks...hell, im ok with the whole 'its fine unless you get caught' thing, because if someone gets caught and penalized, other teams will stop taking that risk
ReplyDeleteand again, like highwater said...he didnt want to be here, and the FO did try...

I hate the general expectation in society that "if you ain't cheating, you're not trying hard enough!"
ReplyDeleteI blame it on the politicians, athletes and rock/movie stars who constantly are caught with their hands in the cookie-jar (or someplace else, in Michael Jackson's case) and never really pay the price for it.
Even though I'm a hippie bleeding heart northeast liberal, I still believe in the rules, and that everyone should abide by them. (unless you're driving on the highway, of course!)

Wow...the whining hits new highs. There are very few free agents that want to come to Pigeonville. Even after a "lottery" season that you had. The Vikes are doing what it takes to improve a football team. If Hutchinson wants to go then he can do so. While you are whining, maybe you can petition congress to see if they can overturn the Superbowl. Oh and by the way it is "lose" not "loose". Come on down to Miami next Feb and watch the Dolphins crush the NFC in XLI. (Forty One for you Pigeon fans).

That was hilarious, realist. Tell me if you recognize these numbers:

Now that i have calmed down i can say this and mean it.
ReplyDeleteI don't wish injury to Hutch i really don't i take that back. I feel like he is screwing us but oh well we can overcome it. I am not as mad for him leaving us then A-Rod because A-Rod was the mariners and Hutch isn't the Seahawks. If the Vikings want to overpay for Hutch and Hutch wants to leave good for him i hope u play 7 UNINJURED seasons for them where you don't reach the playoffs once. I still hate the NFC North. If he leaves we will be in great cap conditions and can sign much needed help. I don't think whoever replaces Hutch will be a huge drop off. Infactour whole line was good and we can either draft or put someone else in and won't suffer too much. I never want to keep a player who doesn't wanna be here so if Hutch doesn't like being in Seattle good ridence.
There is much more to life then just football and i realize that i just bought a new car. All that stuff i said last night was just the heat of the moment stuff didn't mean most of it. I apologize for my tone and speech if yall wanna remove it feel free to do so. Again i am sorry and didn't mean most of it, the part where i wished injury on Hutch and i don't remember if i wished injury on A-Rod but i was lovin his years in Texas, and i hope the same for Hutch. Be a dominant player on a crappy team.
I hope its okay for me to wish that his team never makes it to the playoffs.

I read an article today on ESPN, I think, about Tom Condon and IMG. This whole mess with Hutchinson is this scum bag Condon and the lawyers at IMG. This was nothing more than getting more money for a Guard than they normally get in the market place and proving to the world that they are the best in the business. I can even understand how Condon found somebody dumb enough to help him. New Viking ownership who doesn't realize they just got involved in something really stupid and affects the other 31 owners. The contract does exactly what Condon wants it to do. They have nothing to lose and they get $7M a year over 7 years. They throw in the $6M roster bonus to kick the first year up to $13M. The problem is that Seattle can still easily match the offer sheet. So then they throw in the "poison pill" to muddy the waters even more. The reason the Vikings go along with this is that they have nothing to lose but seven days and are willing to pay a little more per year to get one of the best OG's in football. Even a normal contract for Hutchinson would still have been $6M or a little more per year and the TT was $6.4M. It's bad enough that you have two parties conspiring to screw the 3rd and circumvent the TT, but it also throws an inflated contract price into the computation for the FT and TT in future years. The "poison pill" will be thrown out and maybe the $6M roster bonus can be changed to a bonus and spread over 5 years but the problem is what to do about the inflated contract value and the other affects. I don't see how the NFL can reward Condon for his actions in this or the Vikings for that matter. Maybe the best NFL solution is to not approve the offer sheet. The problem with not approving the offer sheet now is that Condon has also destroyed the relationship with the Seahawks. You can be sure all of this is being discussed with the NFL Commissioner about how to get out of this mess of $hit that Condon has stirred up. Getting something for nothing (greed) is the motivation for the Vikings.

ReplyDeleteBRAVO!!!
Posted by Bluefoot
wow...where we you all our site's life, UnckAl?
ReplyDeleteand brought up another point, too...if the poison pill does exist (still waiting for ONeil or Sando to confirm)...you're right...its destroys our relationship with the agent, and maybe even Hutch
Posted by adp
I have a question here. Exactly how does this deal screw the Seahawks? Even if the poison pill gets approved and is aimed directly at keeping the Hawks from matching, isn't that within the spirit of the Transition tag? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the transition tag is used to say that if a team wishes to pay the same amount as another team, they can retain the services of that player. If Seattle matches, the Hawks get the best guard in the game, and with a small amount of reconfiguring, nothing really changes. If they don't match, they get 23 million to play with. I don't see them getting screwed.
ReplyDeletePosted by PaulieP
The screwing takes place in the guarantee of the whole contract Paulie, based on Walts contract, that wouldn't kick in for the Vikings. I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but I believe that if Hutch were to retire prior to the end of contract (injury?), that the Seahawks would have to continue paying him. He'd never renegotiate the contract, because he couldn't be cut without severe cap ramifications and/or would continue to be paid by the Hawks while playing for another team. The contract without this clause is indeed big, fair, and in the spirit of the TT, but the clause makes it a guaranteed contract for the Seahawks, but not for the Queens. That is why its a screwjob.
ReplyDeletePosted by JoSCh
Sounds like the Queens are smart. They exploited a weakness in an opponent. Isn't that what football is all about? I would say that Hutch is complicit in all this.
ReplyDeletePosted by mas
The weakness is not in the opponent. It's in the rules. This is different, mas. The NFL has these things in place for the good of the NFL as a whole.
ReplyDeleteIf the Vikings offered just flat too much money for the Seahawks to match, then that would be exploiting the weakness of an opponent. That would be fine.
Posted by Bluefoot
Yeah, in all actuality its the agent, not the Queens, that wrote the deal. So Condon is evil, as is Hutch for agreeing to it. Evil. And that evil-ity (is that a word?) is based on the T-Tag dropped vice F-Tag as an act of civility and trust by the Seahawks FO to enable Hutch to sign a long term deal on an even playing field. I agree that the Queens aren't playing unfairly, they are benefiting from Condon and Hutch playing unfair. Davin Joseph in da house! In the second round too.
ReplyDeletePosted by JoSCh
But blue, isn't that what they did? They offered a potential contract that Seattle doesn't want to match. If the league approves it, then I just don't understand how Seattle is screwed. If the league said that Seattle had to abide by portions of the contract that Minnesota didn't, that would be getting screwed. This isn't.
ReplyDeletePosted by PaulieP
C'mon, Paulie. With that clause, the playing field between the two teams is not level. It was designed to make it cost more for the Seahawks to retain Hutch than for the Vikes to sign him. That is the desired effect by them, and it works.
ReplyDeleteBut to borrow a line from Napoleon Dynamite, "It's a free county, I can do what I want. GOSH!!!"
Posted by Bluefoot
PaulieP
ReplyDeleteThe offer sheet has a "poison pill" that would force Seattle to guarantee the whole $49M contract where the Vikings won't. That is the problem with it and why it will be rejected. It will also be rejected because the owners which make up the NFL will never agree to fully guaranteed contracts like other Pro sports because of the problem of injuries. I will be totally shocked if the NFL ever lets something like this even go to an arbitrator. I still can't believe that the Vikings were so stupid to let Condon even talk them into getting involved in this scheme. This will be interesting to watch as the Seahawks may decide they don't want to pay $49M over 7 years. It will also be interesting to see how the NFL, Union, Hutchinson, and his agent end up in this as they are all whores and will look out for their own interests.
Posted by UnckAl
from the agent's perspective, it's a win-win situation, because either way his client is now the highest-paid guard in nfl history. i do suspect though that hutch really does want out. if he just wanted more money, then his agent wouldn't have made it so prohibitive for the seahwks to match the contract. i really don't think seattle will match. they've already shown that they won't overpay for a free agent, and placing the transition tag instead of the franchise tag shows that they don't want to invest $6.9 million into a guard.
ReplyDeleteWho does?
ReplyDeleteGuard is one of the lowest impact positions on field, outside of special teams. Even if you're the greatest in the game, it's nowhere near the impact of a left tackle or other skill position. It's absurd. All pro or not, the money is better spent on impact positions.
He doesn't have anyone over a barrel.
Posted by Bluefoot
If he goes (and the NFL stands by and says , sure that's ok)He is going to a team without a chance in hell of going anywhere for the forseeable future... and he gets to deal with Minnesota in the winter... although I hear there are some really fun summer boating activities... that must be the draw!
ReplyDeletePosted by Holoman
The whole system is screwed! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of a fair system, and the current NFL Salary Cap is not a fair system. What is a fair system? Something like what NFL Europe used? Maybe something like what the NBA uses?
Some of you know I follow the Redskins. And it makes me happy to see my team aggressively going after the players they think that can help the team. I love to see them spending money and doing everything that they can! And it chaps the pride to hear stuff like "trying to buy a championship" or "playing outside the rules."
What they are doing is legit - just as what Minnesota did, here, is legit. They made a fair deal and it could bite them just as it would bite Seattle. Then again, guaranteeing a contract isn't exactly a big deal - is it?
But as a fan of the NFL, I don't think it's (the actions of the Redskins/Vikings) fair.
Let's get a real system, one that works, and one that is fair for all teams. How about this?
Let's give every owner $100 million dollars, regardless of what their team earns. Let's simplify every contract as 3 years, and whatever sum of cash. Everything is guaranteed. All bonuses are eliminated. Let's apply this to coaches and scouts, too. And then let's see what happens. That's an even playing ground. No one would go for it, but it'd be more fair.
Final comment: sorry Seahawks fans, but under the current climate, you didn't get screwed. Your guy signed a great offer, and he would have been a fool to decline that one! His agent was a genius for getting a great offer, and if Seattle matches and that contract becomes guaranteed, then he doesn't have to be afraid of getting cut or have his contract renegotiated against his will - as NFL teams are apt to do.
On the other hand, in a perfect world, you did get screwed. You made a good faith offer by transition-tagging the guy when you couldn't get the signing done, and he took the opportunity to play tough. That sucks, and I feel bad for you guys - especially because it costs you a good player and for what? No compensation. Owie. :(

What a crock of $hit. Gene Upshaw heads the NFLPA and Tom Condon is the agent for Upshaw. And people think unions are sacred. You talk about whores climbing into bed together. The CBA was rewritten after a 1993 ruling to avoid just what is happening here. Its just amazing to me that the new ownership in Minnesota was talked into getting involved in this. They are one of 32 owners who have got to be the dumbest ba$tards on the face of the earth. This thing could never have gone to arbitration without Minnesota signing the offer sheet. The Vikings have now guaranteed that Hutchinson will get $7M a year which is at least $1M more than the price should have been and distorts the computation for the TT and FT for seven years. They have unwittingly screwed themselves and their other 31 owners. Upshaw and Condon are laughing themselves silly after playing the Vikings for fools. This is the problem in America today. Fools make decisions and everyone else pays for it.
