Breaking News: Seahawks Nab Peterson; Hutch GONE

Wake up, wake up...its the 1st of tha month...so cash your checks and come on!!!...im all over the news this year baby!!!! hahahaha!!!

One of the busiest teams of the offseason struck again when the Seattle Seahawks reached agreement with former San Francisco linebacker Julian Peterson on a blockbuster seven-year, $54 million deal.

The deal, which the Seahawks and agent Kevin Poston spent today finalizing, includes $18.5 million worth of guarantees, including $10 million this season.

A Seahawks official confirmed the agreement in principle with the linebacker the San Francisco 49ers designated their franchise player one year ago.

As for Hutch, the PI's front page has a little blip:

Hawks to let Hutchinson go
Hours after losing a ruling by an arbitrator, the Seahawks apparently have decided to let a deadline pass to match a rich offer sheet to offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson, who will become a Minnesota Viking. Details shortly.

  1. Yes baby. Peterson just made this defense alot better. While i don' think loosing Hutch will hurt alot i think getting Peterson will help alot. This will be good for the defense and the team overall.

Goodbye Steve Hutchinson, Hello Julian Peterson.

Lets convince Abraham to come now

  2. Its great to me because I was wrong the entire time i bashed Peterson's coverage...i did research and it definitely wasnt him i was thinking of...I would think it was Arrington then, as it was a big named FA LB...but i havent found evidence to suggest it was...i dont think it was Witherspoon...so im confused

    Say it with me:

    LOFA LEROY JULIAN>>>DOMINANCE

  3. MORE BREAKING NEWS:

on a side note, Seattle IS still negotiating with Abraham...AWESOME...i told you Matt Thornton being traded was a good sign!...no pun intended

check out this clip from the Schefter article:

"And they are not done there. Still in place is a contingent deal for defensive end John Abraham, whom the Seahawks have the exclusive negotiating rights for from the New York Jets in exchange for Seattle's first-round pick."

If we EXCLUSIVE negotiation rights, then the Jets won the staredown with Abraham...cheap, but hey...it favors us for once

  4. A year ago, our linebacker corp was a mix of surgically repaired frankensteinmen, young but slow, 100% effort but 0% talent turnstiles.

This year they are now BAD ASSES.

We're gonna bust some chops this year, eh? I LOVE TOUGH DEFENSES.

    GO SEAHAWKS!!!

    [dancing, stirring the pot]

    YESSSS!!!!

  5. two words ill allow to describe our YOUNG LB crew:

    Badasses (as Blue used already)

    and

    NASTY

I doubt anyone would disagree STRONGLY when I say Peterson and Lofa are both top 5 LBs in the NFL...and im talking LB...not ILB or OLB...LBs IN GENERAL...

WOW...best trio in the NFL? maybe...Fletcher and Spikes, Lewis and Suggs, Edwards and Merriman? We gotta be up there...id take Lofa and Peterson over them any day!!!

  6. I love Peterson - he's smart, scary athletic, long arms, strong, quick, fast, and he's got mad hops - but most of all, he brings it on every down. He plays with heart. It makes him a great addition to the team. I'd take him over Joey Porter in a blink.

  8. I'd like to see the terms of the contract, but it looks like the FO paid great (but fair) money for a very high impact player, and left enough incentive to keep him hungry. And while I think we'll continue on the BPA in the draft, since we can, I think the holes at G and DB will take care of themselves, even with the potential loss of 1st rounder. We also have to remember that late season FAs are still possible! Awesome.

  9. Two Words: HUTCH WHO?

    and another bucket worthy quote...

  10. With the D-line rotation and that linebacking corps, even Etric Pruitt could be an effective safety.

Well... no, not really, but it does lessen the burden, eh? (Please get healthy, Ken Hamlin!)

  12. Everyone knew that was you, alba. Any other poster would have realized that "Hutch" is his last name, and thus would have correctly written "Steve Who" instead... ;-)

Oh well. If what everyone says is true--(guards are not as irreplaceable as are tackles)--I think the Hawks will be in OK shape. There are some young guys on the team who have been around a few years, and playing next to Jones will be a great advantage.

I like the Peterson signing. It was more than I'd have liked to see the Hawks pay for him, but they can do that now, I guess, and if they want to improve the team even more they will have to spend some money.

Now let's see Abraham and a good veteran DB get signed!

  13. I thought this would be interesting as a reminder of just what type of talent the Hawks acquired in Peterson. Granted, he needs to return to old form to warrant the following ranking. Below is a list of the top players in the NFL, as rated by Scouts Inc. at ESPN. Not sure how up-to-date these rankings are and they are a bit suspect in places, but he is the second-ranked defensive player on the list (behind only Kris Jenkins and tied with Shaun Rogers and Peppers). If he returns to pre-achilles form, he is a game changer. It's exciting to have one of those on the team. For all the talent they've had over the last several years, they haven't had that one guy who just changes a game. They've been good because they are solid all the way around. Well...they just might have found their game changer. My only concern, and I don't mean to downplay it becuase it is a significant concern, is that he returns to form and remains healthy, which has been a bit of a problem in the past.

    1 Peyton Manning QB IND -- 98
    2 Randy Moss WR OAK -- 97
Tom Brady QB NE -- 97
Ray Lewis LB BAL -- 97
5 LaDainian Tomlinson RB SD 96

  14. Those have got to be dated by a year or two. Gonzalez's production dropped off notably last year (to say nothing of Jamal Lewis's abortion of a season)... Pace over Big Walt... Culpepper anywhere on the list... Lewis no longer the impact player he was...

  16. BREAKING NEWS, AGAIN:

    KEVIN BENTLEY REMAINS A SEAHAWK

    yup, and again to:

Uff, monkey, Shonuff (are you the same guy as Uff?)

apologies, i admit i was wrong...or it was the wrong LB...everywhere im reading about Peterson lining up at CB---bad coverage LBs dont do that...so i got him mixed up with someone else...so apologies...and yay!

oh and if some are worried about the contract...two things to remember:

    Reinfeldt never overpays!
    and
    7 years...its basically like Shaun's contract...do you honestly think we're gonna have a 34 year old LB?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think the rankings were done prior to last season. It was all I could find. I wanted to see how the "experts" stacked him up against the best in the business. I'm still very concerned about his injury problems. Last season's production just won't do given the contract. If he returns to 2003 form, it's a steal.

  18. I have to say it, IMHO we just landed footballs most underrated player!

One of my younger borthers is a huge niners fan, for years I have watched Julian Peterson play and listened to my little brother bug me about just how good he is. All I could say is, Ya he really is that good bro.
I have said for a long time now , that Peterson is the singlemost underrated LBer in the league, if not player in the league, AND WE JUST LANDED HIM!
I distinctly remember watching him against the Seahawks do something I didn't think was humanly possible, and my jaw just dropping, Darrel Jackson broke free on a crossing route, and started heading at an angle upfield twoards the sidline, he BURNED his corner, Hass laid out a perfectly placed ball, over DJacks shouldert, and just when I thought we had a big first down, a Niner player flew in between DJack and the ball, leaping UNBELIEVABLY high into the air, and tipping the pass away. I thought that somehow the corner must have gotten back into the play, but lo and behold, it turned out to be none other than Julian Peterson, a LINEBACKER of all people, who turned on the jets, showed jaw dropping ability to leap and swatted the pass away.
I wasn't drunk, but I damn near fell out of my chair that play was so good...I will never forget it.

Now he's ours!!! I just couldn't be happier. As Bluefoot said above, this guy is a game changer! A real big time game changer, and added along with Lofa and Hill, this gives us an amazing LBer corps.
As much as I love Hutch, (he was one of my favorite Seahawks, I loved watching him play), if we can land John Abraham to go along with Peterson, in my mind, it will more than offset the loss of Hutch.

BTW, I have held this in for a long time, those of you who said that Alexander was all about the money, and that he would sign elsewhere, because he was jsut a greedy jerk, (and you know who you are *coughVin*cough), owe him and us who said otherwise an apology.

SA signed, while HUTCH was the one who stabbed us in the back.
From this day out, if I ever again hear about SA having a greedy selfish attitude, or not being a team guy...I will rip them a new bunghole!!! The best running back in Seahawks history, will now retire a Seahawk, and I for one couldn't be happier. Too bad the real jerk turned out to be the best stinkin left guard in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh one last thing, if anyone didn't know this, and or wondered whether or not Peterson is a team first/Rukell type of guy? The answer to that is, there may not have been a bigger team guy on the Niners! Peterson has ALWAYS been about the team, and about working his stinkin butt off. He is EXACTLY the Ruskell kind of guy who fits the team first concept we are building here. If anyone wondered at the size of Petersons contract, I can guarantee that is why it is so big. Just like Ruskell knew something about Lofa last year, that no one else knew, and was willing to trade up to get the guy he really wanted who would fit into his masterplan; so has he willingly overpaid to make sure that he got Peterson, a guy who fits PERFECTLY into his master plan. GUys, this is sweet.

Now I just hope they find a way to replace, Jurivicius and what he brought to the recieveing corps last year. I'm really gonna miss watching that guy!

    ReplyDelete
  20. ahh i missed the monkey rants!...that was an adventure!

Abraham is going to Atlanta...where he will get a season ending injury because of karma, for using us and never wanting to come here...ala Hartwell, who ironically signed with Atlanta too

Three teams I officially hate after this season, in addition to the Giants, Ravens, Rams, Cardinals, and Eagles:...Steelers, Vikings, and Atlanta

I guess now we're going HARD AFTER NATE BURLESON...put a clause in his contract that says: 100 million dollar bonus if he is wearing purple during the season...do it for getting a good WR, do it because he wants to be here which is apparently rare, and do it for spite

    Those jerks deserve it...

That said, I never took Ty Law seriously about coming here, but now i imagine things will heat up...and Atlanta or Minnesota...if you so much as put a finger out there on those two...you're gonna find out what an iron beak can do!

  21. No surprise if Burleson wants to come here, he's from here, right?

LOL though at the 100 million for wearing purple clause. That's good stuff.

  22. They couldn't do that because the matching team would have to pay more. They could, however, sign him to a ten year contract with huge numbers over the last few years. Then, they put a clause in where he has to be more highly paid than X (whatever fits based on the vikings roster/salaries). If he's not more highly paid than X, the entire contract becomes guaranteed (including years 8, 9 and 10 in which he makes 25M). That should do the trick.

  23. This is my list of teams that i hate after this season Rams, Cardinals, Cowboys, and now the Vikings, Packers, and Falcons. Oh well I guess Abraham likes loosing cause Michael Vick can't pass for nothin and u can only run around for so long.

Burleson is from Seattle his younger brother and i went to high school together but his brother was a basketball star and decided to have his worst game of the season during the state tournament and thus we lost and i blame Lyndell Burleson for that. They look extremely alike too. Oh yeah Franklin High school was also the home of Corey Dillon and Jason Terry.

I think Peterson allows us to open the playbook up a little better. This guy can cover and blitz u can line him up anywhere talk about confusing the opposing offense. Now that we still have a first round pick who should we draft i say CB. Is Dyson still on th market if so bring his injury progne self back for another try i liked AD. I don't think we need a Wide reciever every year people say we need a reciever but we do fine without draftin one. If Urban is healthy he can be the big target we use if not use the big softy Jeremy Stevens.

I just called Stevens soft to annoy you alba he's alright to be honest.

  26. Wow Meezy that really was pretty Vin-esque. Three points! The field goal is good! (Blue will get that)

SO now with Abraham off the market, I guess we turn our sites on Ty Law? older player, but a savvy vet, who just happened to have had a monster season last year, proving to me at least, that he still has some gas left in the tank. We could use a guy who has bee on a Superbowl winning team, and has the veteran knowledge that he does. Only thing I am worried about is the length and size of the contract we would have to offer.

Apparently CLayton threw out some numbers, which were supposedly in the ballpak of what we will be ffering him; if true, it didn't look too bad to me. Not considering the kind of veteran leadership and talent he brings. I say bring on the LAW!
Personally I felt from the beginning of this offseason, that our biggest need by far, was an upgrade or two in the secondary, (dependent of course of Hamlins health).

But even if Law were to fall through, there are still a few other guys I have my eye on that would work just fine.

Monkey what were the numbers that Clayton threw out. Last i remember he was asking for 10 million dollar signing bonus and i don't wanna give him that.

I wanna draft a safety maybe Darnell Bing before a corner. Before signing Peterson i wanted Carpenter from Ohio State.

  30. Hypocrisy check...

People who hate on Hutch for leaving for more dough and hate on Abraham for going to ATL can't have it both ways: Abraham went to ATL for less money to be closer to his family, which is precisely the sort of altruism that fans who crow about players going to the highest bidder want to see out of players.

And if you can follow the train of thought in that overlong sentence, a shiny nickel for you.

  32. Local radio had Hutch's conference call with the Viking press on this morning. It was kind of interesting. He pretty much said he wanted to return to Seattle, but the FO hadn't talked to him or his agent since before last year's draft. He also said he didn't know who put the poision pill in the contract. Of course the radio guy has a news story that Hutch's team proposed that he be the highest paid player for 3 years but the Viks countered to 1 year.

I can understand Hutch wanting to score the big contract and don't fault him for that. But does he actually think reasonable people would believe that a FO who drafted Lofa & Hill, that signed Matt and WJ, and handled Mr. Ego perfectly would drop the ball that badly? Seriously, do you think the FO's to-do list looked like this:

    1. Sign Shaun
    2. Cut the players that didn't perform
    3. Sign Kevin Bently
    4. Find where Herdon hid the blackmail photos and then cut him
    5. Ignore Hutch some more

    Please.

The radio guys brought up a great point though. If you ignore the poision pill and assume the Hawks matched the deal, they essentially give up signing a pro-bowl quality player. By not matching, and freeing up so much cap space, they can sign Peterson and still have a ton of money left to go after other great players.

  33. I agree.

And if you have a choice of wheter to spend the money on a great linebacker or a great guard, I say go with the linebacker. It's a much greater impact position, and your team will be better for it.

Regardless of the facts, yes, yes I can hate Futch and Abraham. I'm a fan. And that is my right. I'm still mad at Hartwell. Hell, I'm still mad a Galloway! Reasonable? 37. Hutch's comments are those of a whiny prima donna.

They didn't want me enough! They didn't try hard enough to sign me when I wanted to sign! They didn't say I was special enough to give me the Franchise Tag, so clearly they didn't really want me back!

Pretty pitiful. From what I read, the Seahwaks wanted him pretty badly. They held back the franchise tag out of respect, and to avoid a negative situation/hold-out that the franchise tag seems to create.

IMO, the problem is that all communications go through the agent. Mr. Condon tells Hutch what the the FO is "really" thinking. He twists the Seahwaks good-faith effort into an insult, to create the incentive for little miss Hutch to sign a nasty contract in a tizzy-fit of indignation over being so disrespected. Then he gets a monster contract for his guy and legitimizes a method to squeeze more for all of his future signings.

Gotta hand it to Mr. Condon.
