Official: Andre Dyson and Jamie Sharper Released

Sando:

Look for the Seahawks to release CB Andre Dyson, as reported, and LB Jamie Sharper, as expected. I expect both moves to happen this afternoon. The team is also expected to release CB Michael Harden, but Dyson and Sharper are the bigger names here. Both had roster bonuses coming later this month, Dyson for $3 million and Sharper for $1.5 million. By my unofficial math, Dyson will now count $2.4 million against the cap instead of $4.26 million. Sharper would now count $2 million instead of $4.5 million. Don't take these numbers to the bank until I confirm them, but off the top of my head these moves would save $4.36 million.

Wow...im a little surprised they didn't wait until you know...they needed the extra money, for Dyson's release

I don't care for this move. (Dyson's)

  1. Ok he released now because of an upcoming roster bonus...but im sure that isnt in the next 3 days, right?

Still baffled...i like Herndon, but not enough for him to start...

Granted Dyson wasn't worth his production, but that was his first year of injury problems...and no rookie in the draft is going to start...and Clements is no longer available, so i dont get who out there could be better

  2. The one thing about those 10 games he played is he got injured in all 10 of them and had to miss a few series.

I don't like this move. Dyson was a good cover corner when he was healthy. He was better then Herndon. Why cut a guy with starting caliber who isn't a locker room problem when u don't need to. The guys in the front office know much more than me but i don't like this move atleast not now.

  3. well if it makes you, and even myself feel better...I havent felt this bad about the FO during Ruskell's tenure since he traded up to draft Lofa Tatupu (BEFORE I found out he was the MLB of USC...I was ok after I read that in his scouting report)

    : )...

i just hope mayeb they will re-sign him for less? bleh I dunno...its clear though...things are picking up

and ALBA - sorry if I knocked your newest post down a spot...

  4. Sharper will be gone too, officially...nothing surprising there...

Michael Harden is also going to go...so our CBs are thin...plenty of time to get that situated...but you can't help but wonder what will happen next...

I always thought Madison was underrated, and a fringe-great corner...but now hes getting old...so who knows...Woodson and Law are possibilites...but Law is mouthy and Woodson is ignorant

  5. U too ADP i felt a little better knowing he was from USC even though i don't like USC they were dam good. I guess they r freeing up more room for some big signings Hutch & Alexander.

  6. Before we go second-guessing Ruskell, let's think about what ISN'T being report, rather than what is.

In other words, why do you think the Seahawks are looking to save $3-4M in roster bonus money now? Could it be that they are on the brink of signing a player or two and they need that extra cushion to keep them under the cap?

Now, if they ARE on the brink of signing a player or two before the free agency period starts, who do you think that might be?

Do the initials S.H. and S.A. ring any bells?

Just speculation, but it could be a good explanation.

  7. ADP - no need to apologize about knocking my topic down a notch...that's what this blog is for....to bring breaking Seahawks news to the masses!

I had heard that Dyson's roster bonus was due tomorrow, which is why he's being cut right now. Don't know when Sharper's money was due, but probably tomrrow too.

Nothing says that if these guys are still hanging around in a few weeks unemployed that Ruskell & Co. don't bring them back.

  8. nah not second guessing...just curious where this is going...this has been a very chaotic 4 days...and will be even more chaotic tomorrow...I was too busy enjoying the Seahawks' perch over the teams scrambling for security...and boom now we're flying around making 'droppings'...

but I do feelmaybe it is indication they are close with some players...but now I would expect even Rocky Bernard to be back...Seattle had to of jumped in the top 5-6 in terms of flexibility after those two get released...

  9. It's not that i am second guessing Ruskell or anything its just that Dyson anr or Sharper were 2 signings that i really liked last year and i would like to keep them Seahawks if at all possible.

I know Sharper is expandable but Herndon has talent but the only thing he showed last year was that he could tackle in the open field because his coverage wasn't all that great.

Lets wait to see what free agency brings us.

  10. My first post to this forum. I think if you look at the video interviews posted on the Seahawk's main page they interveiw Haskel, Ruskel and Marmie. In that interview they recap the combine where (I believe it was Haskel) it was stated that the depth at Corner back was very strong. I thought that might have tipped a hand or two in that the Hawk's will probably look to pick up another great addition to the defense through the draft. I haven't had the time to properly research the talent, team needs, etc to determine who might be around still at #31 (if we don't trade up) but I would imagine that some of these cash strapped teams won't be able to sign their new rookies and may have to let some good talent slip especially if it includes a deep pool at a particular position.

All that said, I'd like to see Rock, JJ, Mack and (if at the right $$$) SA resigned and then draft a high quality CB. I'd like to see a quality QB pickup off the FA so that Senaca can have the chance to show his stuff at WR and maybe return specialist. I'd also like to see a good LB pickup to give depth to that position now that Jamie is gone (give zero hope of bringing him back). Just some thoughts.....

  11. Welcome to the site...hope you enjoy it!

As for who could be around...Bobby Carpenter, and Demeco Ryans could be two LBs that drop to us...Ryans being more likely...

The thing with drafting a corner is...you can't trust them to start...I definitely dont trust Herndon as a starter (Sorry Dr. A-ass)...and starting a rookie is asking for him to be taken advantage of...and that could lead to confidence problems...I really think maybe draft a CB and sign Madison...who could be a one-year stay might work...we'll see

Honestly this is one of the better drafts recently...alot of depth and a couple of potential superstars (Williams, Ferguson, Bush, Leinart, and HAwk...in that order)

  12. i don't have a big problem with dyson's release, though for the record i'd like to see him back at a smaller cap number--and he may well be amenable to that. in many ways dyson is jamie sharper waiting to happen; a quality player towards the end of his peak at a position where decline is rarely graceful, especially once ligament and muscle problems begin to pile up.

to me he's a prime candidate for release where you say, "let the market set your value." keep in mind, dyson probably still has more value in seattle than anywhere else.

seattle is weaker at corner w/o dyson but hardly dysfunctional, particularly given how much time dyson already missed.

as for free agents, i'd stay away from the high priced corners (e.g., law, woodson, madison) based on age. i'd be inclined to look for another 2nd tier guy (like herndon) to split that position and then look for a corner in the draft to hedge against the possible loss of trufant after next year.

i might be inclined, if i were tim ruskell, to talk to a guy like trevor pryce. for a reasonable short term deal i'd certainly be willing to take some snaps away from craig terrill and joe tafoya.

  13. I hope that maybe Dyson and Sharper will come back for a little cheaper. They are good players and neither one of them suffered any major injuries before they came here. Must be the Seattle curse same thing with Wistrom never injured then he comes here and we know what happened.

Last year Peter Boulware was released just to resign with Baltimore for less money I'm hopin for the same here.

  15. judging by the recent releasing of several teams, the FA CB market is going to be pretty deep. So I think the hawks should be able to fill dyson's shoes pretty easy if he does end up signing somewhere else.

  16. It's the old adage, "don't throw good money after bad"

I applaud the moves by the Seahawks, even though I personally liked both Dyson and Sharper.

And while we'll probably sign some other FA CB, for god's sake, DON'T PUT HIM IN DYSON'S SHOES! Those puppies seem to be injury prone!!!

  17. Keep in mind that even after the Hutch and SA signings (fingers crossed, knocking on wood), the Hawks will still be under the cap. Perhaps they're looking to clean up other teams' massive cuts... Ty Law, one-year contract? I could also see Dyson being back for less money.

It's a shrewd business move, which should be applauded. Besides, the Seahawks are notably good to their players (paying Hamlin's salary when they didn't have to; not waiving a popular injured TE - name escapes me - when it would have been bad for morale). I stand behind Ruskell & Co.

  18. Uff - are you thinking of them not waiving Jerheme Urban when he got hurt, but instead retracting the waiver and putting him on IR so he'd get paid last year? Yea, that was a VERY CLASSY move by the FO for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm sensing some sarcasm there. Yes, the FO flubbed the original handling of the situation (sticking with a strictly-business approach), then -- as I remember, and I often don't remember well -- the players' rep, Mack, told them that it was an ass move, and they wisely reversed course.

Bottom line here, upon which I think we can agree and support: the Seahawks are a business first and foremost, but one that is sensitive to the delicate nature of team morale.

  20. Citizen K-

are you old enough to remember the movie Johnny Dangerously, with Michael Keaton and Joe Piscopo?

My father called me Davey once--once. :-)

    --
As for extending Trufant I think the team is doing things right and putting themselves in financial position to talk extension.

My suspicion, again, is that Seattle will probably look at 2nd tier FA corners rather than Law, Woodson, and Madison. A Herndon/Babineaux tandem isn't fantastic but it's adequate and inexpensive. I could also see the team looking to get a corner on day 1 of the draft. Seattle's bend-but-don't-break philosphy lends itself to young players being able to contribute. Seattle doesn't ask its corners to play much tight press coverage.

If Seattle does look to make a "splash" in free agency I could see it to upgrade the pass rush, and probably at tackle rather than end. That's why I mentioned Trevor Pryce in the previous post. That way, even if they are able to re-sign Rocky Bernard they'd only be taking snaps away from Craig Terrill. And in any event I fully expect Seattle to come out of the draft with a defensive tackle who will make the rotation. This draft is waist deep in the kind of one-gap, hustle-type tackles that Ruskell loves.

It's funny how much better your corners get when there's a consistent pass rush. I'm not worried about the loss of Dyson one bit.

  22. you know, I typed that Urban reply 3 different ways in an attempt NOT to make it sound sarcastic. I guess it didn't work. It was sincere. I thought it was a class move by the FO to bring him back, and actually, credited Ruskell for initially waiving him as a test of the solidarity of the team.

Loved the movie Johnny Dangerously, but I still can't find a movie theater that serves whitefish!

  23. It was the right thing, with Urban...but they cut him first...the players went off on them...yeh they got the final say, but the players were the classy ones there...and if im Urban, I'd be saying 'so this is what a family feels like'...

Seahawks could address WR, CB, G, or LB in the first round of the draft...that means we're drafting a TE, everyone...as much as I like researching NFL and NBA drafts...its only pointless cause the Seahawks always surprise, I give up trying to guess who they may go after...I just hope if Hagans is around at our 2nd Round pick...that we take him...I really think he will be good.

  24. I'm not a draft junkee, but I feel the same way!

    ReplyDelete
  25. It looks like everyone is on the same page about Sharper, but I think people are giving Dyson too much credit. I don't think he'll be back unless he agrees to a much lower number, and then I think the Hawks still might pass on him.

Ignoring the injuries, he's a pretty small corner in a league of ever growing WRs. He was touted for his man coverage, but the team mostly plays zone. When he was in man, his coverage was average--he's definitely not a shut down CB,or even in the top 20. His value last year was artificially inflated by Lucas' signing and the team's needs. Hell, if Herden replaces you and nobody perceives it as a HUGE drop-off...it's not a good sign for you wallet.

With a potential glut of talent coming into the market, and prices plumeting, the Hawks would be fools not to release him. He may not be the last player released in pursuit of a better deal.

Don't forget the skills of your CBs are inversely porportionate to your pass rush. If you get a mean rush on, your corners only need to maintain coverage for 3-5 seconds--average coners will work. When you don't have a rush, then they need to cover 7-10 seconds--you need shut down coners.

Why would this matter? Ruskill builds D front to back. Maybe he's focused on signing Rocky and improving the d-line even more. Maybe he knows that an average corner, even a rookie, will be good enough if the line can dominate. And a strong line also helps run defense.

It's not a coincidence that the Hawks lead the league in sacks and the musical chairs in the backfield didn't hurt the defense too bad.

  26. Good post Bok, but why MORE hating on my man Herndon ??!! And there's a FREAKING N in there, H-E-R-N-D-O-N, if you gonna dis him spell his name right! (I know you keep doing it just cuz it bugs me)

He may not be the last player released in pursuit of a better deal.

How true. Like Mike Sando says, "I have it on good authority that the Seahawks do not intend to go into next season with this roster in tact!"

Changes are coming...some will make sense, others won't...but if they're anything like last year...all will be for the better! (or is that bettor?)

  27. adp: I want a tight end. Stevens is soft, Mili is injured and Hannam is only a blocker i would love to get a higher pick and draft Vernon Davis sit on that St. Loser Lambs. Anyways there's plenty of good tight ends and i for one would love an athletic tight end who can catch and block and ISN'T SOFT LIKE STEVENS !!!

  28. Meeze - seriously, would you be calling Stevens soft if Joey Porter hadn't started talking crap at the SB?

Dude laid out and caught that deep TD from Matt that won the Falcons game, and had a bunch of clutch catches for us all season.

Mili had an intestinal blockage...not exactly a normal football "injury". He'll be fine next season and he was our leading TE before Jerramy broke out this year.

And Hannam is an outstanding blocker, but he too has made some clutch catches, namely the TD in the Dallas game.

Don't sell our TEs short just cuz Joey Porter ran his mouth in Detroit.

  29. Mili was a good TE and Hannam made some important catches here and there but he really is the blocking TE and he's dam good at it too.

I'm not calling Stevens soft because Joey Porter called him that but because he dropped all those dam balls in the Superbowl and I CAN"T STAND DROPPED BALLS

And Iknow he caught our only TD pass but i credit that more to Matt and i was relieved that he actually caught the ball besides D-Jack drew all the coverage to himself freeing up Stevens.

I still want a TE I would be happy if we traded up to get Vernon Davis if nuttin else to piss the Lambs off.

  30. Maybe I'm crazy, and maybe because it was the first season I got to see every game (thank you DTV!) but Stevens really showed great maturity from coming into pre-season work-out, through training camp and the regular season. I think the investment Holms made in this local kid with a checkered past is finally starting to pay dividends, and I'd like to see if his game goes up or down next season before pulling the plug on him.

Yes, Hannam is a great blocker, which is all he's been asked to do thus far. I'm also guessing if he sticks around he'll be asked to do more in the offense next year.

I always like Mili...well...cuz he's a fat guy like me!

  31. The only place Stevens is soft is between his ears...unfortunately that matter a lot. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Mili. A full year of rest for an older veteran. Could be quite the competition.

  32. I have no problems with Stevens. He didn't have the best Superbowl, we all know that. But he had a much better season, has been focusing a lot more, and is behaving himself off the field. If he continues the way he's going, he's going to be a good if not very good TE. Remember, we can't have stars at every position.

  33. Okay maybe i'm being a little hard on Stevens. Earlier in the season i was askin to see when his contract expired because i wanted him back. He was pretty consistent through out the season but gosh that superbowl performance just killed me. I was hot after the superbowl i wanted the slap the hell out of him.

He's been alot better this season but maybe thats why i am mad because i expected more of him then dropped balls.

The anti-Stevens rhetoric will probably pass after the season begins and he shows me his abilities.

I'm probably still suffering from my post superbowl anxiety.

I still want Vernon Davis if nuttin else to piss the lambs off.

  34. Boy, Josh Brown must love all the attention Stevens gets for dropping those balls, cuz nobody mentions the 6 points left off the board thanks to Brown's errant kicks. That also might have been a factor in the end of the game poor clock management, if Holms lost confidence in Brown. Who knows, but I still think Stevens bears an unequitable share of the burden for the loss, mainly since Porter made him such a focal point of the game.

  35. You know what i would say Josh Brown is soft but he's a dam kicker and most all of them are soft.

After the Redskins game i would've slapped the guy if i seen him on the street besides Brown wouldn't have to kick those FG if Stevens caught the passes.

I know that one of Browns kicks that missed wouldn't have to have been kicked if Stevens didn't drop the 1st down catch not sure of the other.

  38. Do any of you guys think that maybe we released Sharper because we wanted a different Linebacker. Maybe Julian Peterson since he is a FA or Will Witherspoon.

Could you picture Peterson with us that would be awesom the guy is great all over in coverage stuffing the run sacking the Qb ask him to do it and he will. Only thing is he's been pretty banged up but should be ready to go come next season besides he's stil, young. He would be a great fit he did well for the 49ers think of what he could do for us.

What do u guys think could this be a possibility.Last year we cut Brown to make room for Sharper so why not is this realistic or is it just in my little dream world.

    Posted by meezy

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think we cut Sharper (and Dyson too for that matter) more because we DIDN"T want them anymore, and less because of who their eventual replacements will be. It was mainly a financial decision aided by injury riddled poor performance last season.

Granted, the glut of LBs and CBs due to be on the open market due to this labor thing and regular free agents must give Ruskell & Co. the feeling of a kid in a candy store, but I don't think the moves were motivated for anyone in particular.

(if you won't agree with me on Stevens, why should I agree with you on this??!!)

  40. Anyone know the status of Hamlin? Just curious....we may be seeing a Safety in the first or second round.

    I like
    Whitner/Ohio St/5'11-205
    A Smith/Syracuse/5'11-195
Huff/Texas/6'0-198(probably won't be around, but could be best available when the Hawks pick)

Just a thought, not sure if anyone had already mentioned Safetys and I'm too lazy to go back and re-read the posts.

I like the possibility, but prefer corner, as I feel Manuel will be re-singed (and the Seahawks reportedly really want him back)...so Hamlin can come back, or we have his replacement for this year...

...Huff, btw has zero chance falling to us...im so sure of it that if he does fall to us, we're taking him no matter what...he would be the best available...

  45. Well VIn, you and I agree on that anyway, the Hawks need to think secondary secondary secondary.

Personally, I like both of these cuts, Sharper was OK when healthy, but to be honest...I was expecting a LOT more out of him.

As for Dyson, when he was healthy, he was clearly better than Herndon, but he was still beat like a rug an awful lot, I don' think he looked anywhere near as good as Trufant (who was himself very inconsistent), and he was hurt in EVERY single bloody game.

That's really not saying much about either of those two.

I truly expect that this is the part of the show where, Ruskell goes out and drafts a Ronde Barber typ of CB who WILL start right away, one who everyone says is too short, but flies to the ball has great instincts etc...

In fact monkey predicts that we will see a rookie starting opposite Trufant next season, and he will be a stud.

As for the hole left at LB, monkey predicts that we will see....Cornelius Wortham as the full time starter next season, from training camp on. That's right, WORTHAM will be the starter along with Hill and Lofa next year, and our young LB corps, will be among the NFL's ELITE next season.

monkey also predicts that whatever fee agency money is left over after resigning Alexander and Hutch, will be spent on, something NO one, not even I would have possibly guessed, it will surprise everyone, who we pick up. And it will work out so well, that when we win the Superbowl next season, most people will say, that that move was the big difference.
