Breaking News: Shaun Alexander Will Sign Tender

From Mike Sando:

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this but I was in a 90-minute meeting this afternoon at the paper and the cell phone was off.

Shaun Alexander has agreed to report Friday and sign the one-year tender in exchange for the Seahawks not franchising him in 2006, and not trading him (presumably without his permission) before the October trade deadline.

HUGE

UPDATE FROM ESPN.com:

In a compromise move that provides the Seattle Seahawks the services of their premier runner for one more season, but possibly not beyond the 2005 campaign, star tailback Shaun Alexander on Tuesday evening signed a one-year contract with the club and will report to camp on time later this week.

The one-year deal is for $6.32 million, the same amount Alexander would have received had he signed the one-year qualifying offer for a "franchise" tailback, a concession that the Seahawks have been attempting to gain for months.

The deal stipulates that the Seahawks cannot designate Alexander as a franchise player again at the end of the 2005 season. So unless the two sides reach a deal on an extension, which could be tough given the acrimony that built up over the spring, Alexander would be an unrestricted free agent next spring and free to leave.

Alexander will report to camp at Eastern Washington University on Thursday and be on the field for practice on Friday.

  1. lol im waiting to see the people who think he is selfish respond to this...

there might not be a long term deal to follow, but he is going to head to training camp ON TIME

  4. hehehehe i share your excitement Paulie!!

knowing Reinfeldt...i honestly think a long term could be done...it just depends whether or not SA is willing to be flexible enough

the way i see this...SA was NOT disllusional all along...he warned us something was going to happen, and Ruskell kept saying there was nothing much

maybe SA isnt too far off about having 'twins' ;)

  5. That was my naysayers thing btw. I see on Sando's blog the boo-birds are already flocking. I wonder how some people can look at anything and find it negative. Guess its TOO much Seahawk fandom? Win a superbowl, doesn't matter, they won't win another one... win 2, doesn't match the Pats or Steelers.

  6. i updated this...

the update isnt a bad trade...its a win-win situation for both us and SA...

as for the long term deal...its still very possible, but the fact that they signed him for one year might hurt the chances a slim bit...

my guess is that they wait until near the end of the year, and see what he does...then go from there

the question is...is there going to be RB that could fall to our #32 pick next year in case he leaves? ;)

  7. For the record, I was ridiculed on the ST site back in March when I suggested that SA work a deal where he signs the tender and in return the Seahawks promise not to franchise him next season.

Everyone jumped on me saying that there's no way they would agree to it or no way they could be held to it contractually, but there are such things as gentlemen's agreements, even when major scratch is on the line.

I'm too lazy to dig out the posts, but trust me, I called this shot! If Vinny would materialize out of the haze he'd back me on this one.

Now, enough about me....this is FREAKIN AWESOME!

I don't care about his blocking or catching ability. He's a key character guy and a catalyst for the offense. This is HUGE!

  9. I agree with ADP, Ruskell has said all along that he has seen tape and read the reports on Shaun, but has not seen much of him in person. This leads me to believe that Ruskell will use this year to evaluate Shaun and his value to the Hawks and then, after the season start working on a long term deal.

But it's good to know he'll be in camp on time and that the Hawks won't have to deal with the nagging distraction a holdout would have resulted in.

  10. Betcha he blocks his butt off in camp, and in season. And with the blocking, assuming he can do it, comes the catches, since he won't be pulled in obvious passing downs.

And I continue to say he'll get a Rudi Johnson type contract from us, just one year less now.

Or he'll try his luck elsewhere, but I don't think he has much chance of getting better than 4 years, 20-25 Mil, with a 12-14 Mil bonus. D Foster, D McAllister, A Green, E James, J Lewis, D Davis, M Bennett, Dookie Davenport and the original Whizzinator are all in contract years. I think T.J. Duckett might be too, so the market very well could again be flooded.

  11. GOX, Hawkstorian from .net reported that if Boulware will play for a reduced amount (meaning about what we are offering anyway, cap problems or no), we still have enough cap room to sign him. Sorry I don't have a link, I looked, but that msg board is huge, and the search function wasn't working for me.

Also, not to step on Mary's toes, but another NFL insider who covers the Seahawks a lot, Rob Rang, said in this  "It has long been thought Alexander would look to leave if given the opportunity. However, the sources now seem to feel Alexander was being 100% heartfelt with his preference for staying in Seattle "for the long haul."

Both sides commented on the possibility of signing a long term deal sometime during the season or shortly afterward. Neither would classify the long term deal as being a sure thing, however.

Plus Shaun is better than our available options, at least for this year. If it turns out that the FO doesn't believe he is good for the team, then he is gone. If Shaun turns out not to really want to play here, he is gone. This is the best of all possible deals, IMO, nothing was lost by anyone, and the team is better for it.

  12. I have mixed emotions about this move and I see this as a double edge sword. First we get Alexander to report to camp on time, which is what we needed if we are going to have a chance this year with him as the featured back, but we lose the option of franchising him so by the end of the year if we haven't come to an agreement (which I don't think we will) we get nothing in return. Why didn't he just sign the tender if it is a given that a long term contract was in the works? I think it is because S.A. is hoping that there will be a better market for him after this season and he will test it before he signs an offer with Seattle. I do have to give S.A. credit, he said he wasn't going to sign the franchise tender and he didn't, and with it only being 1-year, we won't lose the ability to tag someone else (maybe Hutch?). I'm not quite sure what his principles are but he stood by them.

I don't know about anybody else, but I was also looking forward to seeing Mo and K.C. battle it out in camp working with the first string offense. I think if this were to had happen it could have cleared up some questions surrounding whether or not Holmgren's offense is better with or without S.A. and we could finally stop that debate.

Speaking of Holmgren, is this the last year of his contract? If it is, does anyone else see this as maybe coming down to a him or me contest between Holmgren and S.A. if we don't make it past the first round of the playoffs this year? Just a thought.

    Go Seahawks!

  13. GOX, agree, he is media. But that is what we have today. And I think, but I am not an insider obviously, but I think, judging the way that the FO has talked in various releases, and judging by the deal they struck with Alexander, that they don't know if they want him or not. They'll evaluate and decide. Also, again, not trying to rain on you and Mary's parade, but since she has not provided a recent update, is it possible that the FO has changed or at least softened their stance on Alexanders future with the club? That is all I am saying, it is possible that the club may want to keep him, once they (Ruskell) have had the opportunity to properly evaluate.

Also, I once asked why is Alexanders target rate down so much. Well, I figured it out, its not because he can't catch, its because he won't/can't block, so he gets pulled on passing downs, hence doesn't have the opportunity to catch. Why didn't anyone set me straight on that? WHY?!?!

  14. Oh, and add B Westbrook to the list of possible RB FA's next year. I think Shaun will most definitely want to be a Seahawk next year and beyond.

  15. Peter Boulware has just as much chance of coming to Seattle now as he did before, if not more. The franchise amount counts toward out cap limit, even if the franchise player hasn't signed. The only change will come if he signs a long term deal, which will give us more dough to throw at Boulware.

Part of the reason Shaun signed the deal the way he did (at least in my opinion) is what happened to Darrell Jackson. If you remember, DJ stayed out of voluntary camp due to what he felt were broken promises made to him by the management. Gentleman's agreements are great in principle, but where my money's involved, I want it in writing.

And finally, in regards to Mary. The only thing Mary called that I couldn't have so far was the Koren Robinson release. I don't know anything about Mary. But if we're talking about the accuracy of the things that members of the front office are saying, we only need to look back a week or so. Tim Ruskell (who I believe might be higher up and more in the know than Mary) said that no deal was in the works. What possible reason could he have to have said that? The Hawks gain no advantage by saying that there wasn't a deal working between themselves and Shaun. But he's changed now. And I believe the entire view on all of this has changed. Shaun's last year with the Seahawks? Don't be so certain.

  16. YES!!! YES!!! Now We've got a team that can be a real contender ladies and germs.

For those of you wondering about our chances to sign Peter Boulware this, if anything, makes it even easier to sign him, we now know exctly what we are dealing with cap wise and can work a contract accordingly.

Also, if you don't think Alexander has played well enough yet, (Which some of you don't and I really really don't get) you can out it down on paper, Alexander is about to have his best year as a running back, playing for a big contract next year.

This is it boys, the stars are aligned for this team, we have fresh new faces and a new attitude on defense. WE have the leagues best RB playing for a big contract. WE've gotten rid of our teams biggest headaches and pass droppers. AND most importantly, MIke Holmgren MUST, I repeat MUST, win NOW THIS YEAR, if he expects to coach this team next season.
Everything is in place, we have the players all signed in camp, with the possibility of still adding Boulware. And there are too many jobs and contracts on the line for this team to underachieve yet again.

I look for this team to win at least 10 games, maybe 11 if things fall right, and win one maybe two playoffs games now. Who knows, maybe we can win even more.

This is the single best offseason I can ever remember the Seahawks having since I first started following this team in 76. WOOT WOOT WOOT WOOT!!!! SWEET!!!!

  18. i think he means that the tag was already counted against the cap...the contract is the same number as the tag price...(6.23 or whatever)...so pretty much he is playing under the tag, except without the restrictions and he can join at TC...we dont lose money or gain any since the tag price and the contract are the same, and the tag was already included in Hawkstorian's numbers, we still have left whatever we had before SA signed the one year deal

forgive me if my dislexia is making it sound harder then it is...i tried to explain it...

Paulie, right, but he has/had reason to, they can't negotiate with an unsigned tender. FOs lie all the time, to protect themselves, their players, and their gameplan. That is nothing new.

Mary doesn't/didn't have any reason to say something untrue, however, she also didn't have a reason to say anything, other than being an internet sensation amongst the Seahawk faithful. Which is not to question her motives (although, why did she?), but she had nothing to lose by saying whatever it is she heard or discussed with the FO. I wonder if she got caught leaking and that is why she quit? Saying on the internet that the team is gonna cut someone removes all leverage the team may have had working a trade, and even though her true identity was never substantiated, her track record shows that she did indeed have an inside connection, or was a very, very good guesser.

Even though I agree with you re: Shaun.

  20. Like I said, the only thing she's called that the average fan couldn't was the Koren Release. I'm not saying that she isn't a member of the FO. But in reality, why would she be on chat boards discussing this stuff if she was? If you're going to leak something somewhere, you do it to reporters. They pay for that kind of info. The signings, I could have guessed, especially with the way she worded things. Heck, if I had a cousin on the Seattle police force, I could have done everything Mary did to this point. Let's just say that while I don't completely disbelieve everything she says, to take her word as gospel at this point is ludicrous.

And as for Ruskell, I'm not saying he did or didn't deliberately deceive us. But the way it looks now, the F.O. has changed it's position on Shaun (if there position was ever negative to begin with). On Seahawks.com, they're reporting that one of the caveats to the deal was that both sides had to start negotiating in earnest regarding a long term deal.

  21. "But in reality, why would she be on chat boards discussing this stuff if she was? "

If she was say the secretary, or some other low level employee, that overheard info. Or one of the coaches kids who heard dad talking about it. Lots of people who might have that kind of access without having any real responsibility for the team. And lots of reasons someone might do this, excitement, acceptance, malice, whatever.

"while I don't completely disbelieve everything she says, to take her word as gospel at this point is ludicrous"

    Concur.

And finally, "the way it looks now, the F.O. has changed it's position on Shaun ".

  25. There's Something About Mary!

    She really is an enigma.

It's really easy to sit here with hindsite and say you "could have called those shots", but the fact is, YOU DIDN'T..NOBODY DID.

And while it's also easy to say "those weren't too tough to call", the fact is she's like 5 and 0 on predictions, which is better than just "lucky guessing".

You are right though. To take ANYTHING transferred via the internet as Gospel is LUDICROUS.

I believe you're also right about her being someone CLOSE to the front office, but not a part of it.

I also think the reasons she ducked out are 1) it's summer and if she sounds like a 20-something young lady with better things to do, 2) there's nothing really going on and hopefully she'll come back (like I did), and 3) I think is she is close to someone in the FO, some of the things said on these boards hit a little too close to home.

I also know for a fact that I grossed her out with my K-Rob Cocktail ingedient list, which was a little out of line.

That all being said, I don't specifically remember her saying SA would only be around for 1 more year, but if she did say it, color me a believer!

    12-4

only losses are to Indy, Houston (surprise), Green Bay (mainly because we'll be resting our players ;)) and Arizona (i still think we'll beat the hell outta Philly and avenge TO's sharpie crap)

like ive said a million times, this team is supposed to be one of the better dangerous teams, a threat, and maybe even an 'elite' team...well if we are one of those teams, we should be able to beat a team in the same category shouldnt we? You're not great if you dont beat great teams...so Philly is going down

    now can you dig that???????

oh, and there is heavy RUMOR going around that Peter Boulware is in Seattle with his brother...and there may be a workout for tomorrow with us

  27. The times reports that Shaun did not sign the franchise tender, and then the one year deal, like some believe. Instead, he signed the deal, which voids the Seahawks ability to use the franchise tag for the length of the contract (1 year). This makes me wonder if the franchise tag will be lost if we work out a long term deal. Is it only the first contract that is lost? Or any re-working of the contract during the franchise period? My guess is the first.

And for the record, I did predict the signing of Pork Chop, Mili, and said that I strongly believed we were going to get Sharper. I also said that Shaun would sign. The big difference is that I didn't say I was an insider.

Thanks ADP, your conquest of the French has delivered yet another hotly contested and mildly gross running joke, well done.

Mary, big Rush fan? Me too.

Paulie, re the franchise tag. I think the only way they would lose it is if they did an extension on the existing 1 year contract. The link I posted in the shout out splains it, basically the "year long contract" he signed isn't 365 days, and neither is the FT, they both run til March (or whenever), so we could use it on a player next year. But I think they did essentially "lose" the tag for the duration of the new contract, just no ramifications...

  35. YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!

I am beside myself with glee! Call me a giddy school girl, a troob, a cheerleader, even a whiffleballer, but this all makes me very happy. I wore my Seahawks polo to work, got weird looks out of all the cubicles when I popped my head in here and there and said, "Shaun Alexander is going to be in training camp!"

I got the same looks that guy gets in the travel commercial, where the guys says, "Hey Janet, there's donuts in the conference room!".

All this talk about who predicted what, how it affects the tag - Maybe I have a simple mind, but I don't care. Here are the things that concerned me"

    1. Shaun will be in training camp. I don't think it's been overstated on this site, but I think it's more important for RB's to be in camp than most posiitons. An effective running game is as much about power and speed as it is about synchronicity. Practice, practice, practice is what gives a running game the edge.

2.Red zone offense. Without Shaun, our red zone offense suffers. Because he is Mr. Touchdown, he opens up other options inside the 20. If he were to hold out or be traded, I was expecting a lot of trouble down the stretch.

We don't have the speediest bunch of receivers to help stretch the field and get seperation. The threat of Shaun can give us that extra foot or millisecond to get the play open and complete.

    3. Distraction. I'm not talking about the team being distracted, they are professionals. I'm talking about me. I want to talk football when the season starts, not the 'Alexander situation'. This is good for me. ME, me, ME.

    Me.

    4. Shaun is in another contract year. Plenty of motive to go out and set records. He stil has a lot to prove. He's also heard plenty of criticism about blocking and running hard. I sensed that he responded to that in the second half of the season. (Funny how a reputation in the NFL seems to lag behind their actual performance by about a year. See deserving PRO BOWL candidates.) I expect to see a great performance this year, without the sputtering caused by entering the season late and with no battle hardening training camp or preseason.

    5. We landed the big three. Props to Ruskell, Reinfeldt, and I guess, Paul Allen. This is a freaking MIRACLE, let alone the signing of Sharper and the others. Just unbelievable. I have more confidence in the FO than even the Mike McCormick era, with the Nordstrom family and Knox. This team is going places, even if it takes a couple of years to get there.

OK, I'm out of steam... [tag] your turn.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is a big relief. Hearing that he finally singed was like that feeling when you've been hiking for a long time and you take the backpack off - you suddenly feel lighter and more energetic, and like you might just float away, but you hadn't really realized how weighed down you were with the pack on.

It's odd for me because I am not a big fan of SA, for all the typical reasons that don't need to be rehashed yet again. So I'm not sure why I'm so relieved that he's signed - maybe just fear of the unknown?

But whatever the reason, I'm glad to have SA back!

As to the future, I think it's way to early for anyone, no matter how good their sources, to have any reliable prediction as to what might happen a year from now. SA has one thing that no one else on the team really has - star quality. He may not be the best at player on the team, but when a national audience tunes into a Seahawk game, it's more because of SA than any other single player. Walter Jones may be the best player at his position, but no one tunes in to see how well he'll play, except maybe a few retired lineman or coaches. Not many tune in to watch Hassleback play, except to see how many of his sure completions get dropped. Joe Sixpack wants to see SA break those long runs and score touchdowns.

  47. fun reading. i haven't posted in awhile due to landing a real job where i have to actually work.

and i'm pretty pleased that we have shawn back at a reasonable cost. but i still say he'll be gone in a year or less. he has a better chance of being traded than signing a long-term deal with the hawks.

if there was any hope for that, then he wouldn't have compromised by signing a one-year contract. he knows that's his best hope of getting to free-agency, where he can get the big money he's looking for.

if he was too old too to invest a big contract in this year, then chances are that he will be even older next season. sorry paulie. but this is his last season as a hawk.

still, i bet he runs hard and our offense will be awesome. so this year is looking pretty good!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not necessarily. In football years, he's a couple years younger than his real age, since he's only been starting for 4 years. I think that his chances for a long term deal increased dramatically by signing his one year contract. It not only shows he's willing to be a team player (something he's been his entire career, sans one comment), but it also allows Ruskell to see that he's willing to work on the things he's not spectacular at (mostly pass blocking). The fact that he's been injury free, sat the bench a couple of years, has a "finesse" running style, will be working hard at the things he needs to, and wants to stay in Seattle will (in my opinion) get him that long term.

  51. Not only do we all love the 'Hawk but we can coexist with differing opinions because we all are reasonably intelligent people with well developed senses of humor!

My vote is that we NEVER inherit any of the angry/fighting types from the other boards, and if one does pop up, we exile them faster than K-Rob on a beer run.

Regarding the Shaun contract situation, he HAD to sign the one-year contract before a longer term contract could be discussed, even if the Seahawks were falling over themselves to give him a multi-year deal.

It now becomes a waiting/guessing game. If Shaun starts out great guns, the FO may be encouraged to sign him to a LT deal before mid-season, so as not to lose him. However, if he's doing well and it gets much past mid season, he'd be nuts to sign a LT deal with us without first checking his value on the open market, now that he's guaranteed to be a UFA.

Now if he starts out slow, or gets hurt, the urgency to sign a LT deal will shift to his side of the table.

Either way, even though his $$$ are guaranteed, I expect him to play his a$$ off again this year, auditioning for that big payday, either from Mr. Allen's coffers or someone else's.

  52. B, double E, double R, U, N, beer run,
    B, double E, double R, U, N, beer run,
All we need is a ten and a fiver,
A car and some keys and a sober driver,
    B, double E, double R, U, N, beer run.

Just seeing the word beer run made me start singing. Koren should listen to that song every night.

  53. i came here to post the 50th post in this thread...i was annoyed that it got stuck on 49 for so long...but i come back, and we're up to 56?

about Shaun, for someone considered selfish, he is the only one being honest and talking about whats behind the scenes right now.

all eyes on DJACK now, i understand where he is coming from..and i wont get mad at him since none of us know the details with his situation...but he claims he'll be here at TC...heres hoping he is forreal

  54. after slamming the guy, I suppose I should admit that I may have been wrong about his character. Looks like he has done the right thing, for now. I am cautiously hopeful that he can find a better way to gel with the rest of the team and truly help transform the 'Hawks into a bonafide TEAM.

Well hell, at least I won't be considered someone who jumps on the bandwagon if they actually have a banner year..been a fan since '75. Now live in the land of the Donkeys and take special pleasure in throwing rocks at the giant backlit John Elway car dealership signs (that feature John's impossibly large melon head with the bugs bunny teeth) every chance i get...

    so...GO Hawks!

    11-5! Heard it here first...

fyi, just had a quick visit in Seattle this weekend...phenomenal city! Got pretty pysched just driving to the airport

  55. It sounds like Shaun is setting trends. John Abraham of the Jets wants the same type of deal.

By the way, I may reverse my position on his long term deal, Deuce may have just made it impossible to sign Shaun.
