Jesse Lumsden....Heir to the Throne?

Could it be that we already have a suitable replacement for Alexander the great?
Through much on going controversy, we have fans from all walks of the Seahawk fence taking opposite sides of the Shaun conflict. Arguements range from keeping him to continue the Hawks being a winning orginization, to dumping Alexander the greedy and we will be better off without him. Arguements also state the it will be the end of the Hawks as we know it and we will fail miserably without him. Most have spent the entire offseason debating, and hating, about the likes of a player who is on a hall of fame pace, who may or may not really even want to be here whether or not the Hawks can afford him.

The more I investigate Jesse Lumsden, the more comfortable I feel with him being a suitable replacement to Sir Shaun. Comfortable enough that I am more than willing to say, "Be Gone Shaun" We need not your individualistic ways, we have found an un-selfish team player, that will do just fine thank you.

Allow me to introduce you to:

Jesse Lumsden: The Canadian Speedster

The last name of Lumsden is pretty well known in Canadian university football. In the 1970s, it was Neil Lumsden, a running back and kicker with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, who led his team to the Vanier Cup in 1975 and moved on to play an outstanding career in the CFL. Then came Neil's son, Jesse, who was nearly unstoppable in 2004 as a running back with the McMaster University Marauders. Lumsden made a career of steam rolling through opponents, setting the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) single season rushing record with 1,816 yards, the CIS single-season touchdown record (21) and the CIS career touchdown record (43). He also broke the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) career rushing record with 4,328 yards.
One particular career highlight had direct ties with his dad. On October 4, 2003, Jesse had five touchdowns against the Western Mustangs, matching a performance by his dad on the exact same day years earlier. It came as no surprise when Lumsden was named the 2004 Hec Crighton Trophy winner as the top Canadian university football player. A nice way to cap a season that saw him average 227 rushing yards per game and over 10 yards per carry. With a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash, Lumsden is an explosive runner out of the backfield, a big reason the Seahawks signed him as a free agent following April's NFL draft.
Jesse & Mike Brown "That's one of my best qualities as a football player and I'm trying to expose that as much as I can," says Lumsden. "The Seahawks had a representative at my pro day and I ran real well, and I feel that's one of my best assets." Jesse joins fellow Canadians J.P. Darche, Kerry Carter and Jerome Pathon on the Seahawks roster, but can he speak French like Darche? "Je ne parle pas francais," Lumsden replies. "I don't speak French."

Jesse & Jesse: NFL QB Palmer On Hand To Witness Record Breaking Day As part of the NFL's ongoing efforts to support amateur football in Canada, Ottawa born and trained QB Jesse Palmer, currently with the NFL New York Giants, was on hand to witness a special day in the CIS on Saturday. McMaster star runningback Jesse Lumsden smashed both the CIS single season rushing mark and career touchdown mark in front of his hometown fans.
This report from the Toronto Sun: Toronto Sun to express his gratitude to the McMaster Marauders offensive linemen after his record-breaking day, Jesse Lumsden promised to take the big boys out for dinner. What Lumsden didn't tell the five hogs (their average size is 6-foot-3, 285 pounds) was how he was planning to pay for the big night out. "I'll pay it down the road and get another student loan maybe," Lumsden said after setting three records yesterday, including the CIS single-season rushing mark, in a 32-13 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels in the final regular season game at 48-year-old Les Prince Field yesterday. "I'm going to work (Lumsden is a bartender at a campus pub) tonight, so I'll ask for extra tips to pay for that dinner and maybe I can buy them something nice like a t-shirt."

Humble in all circumstances, Lumsden was true to form yesterday after rushing for 279 yards on 31 carries before 3,782 fans. That total gave him 1,680 yards this season -- with one game left -- topping current Montreal Alouette Eric Lapointe's record of 1,619, set in 1996. The powerful fourth-year running back also reached 4,001 rushing yards for his career, smashing current Edmonton Eskimo Mike Bradley's (Waterloo) record of 3,733. Finally, Lumsden scored two touchdowns to give him 43 for his career, eclipsing Bradley's CIS career high of 41. "If I start thinking about that stuff, you start to lose focus of what's really important," the 6-foot-2, 226-pound Lumsden, the featured attraction at a rare mid-week press conference at Mac this week, said. "The team comes first and this is a team record. I'm not taking sole credit for it at all."
After Lumsden was held to 98 yards on 13 carries in the first half, Mac coach Marcello Campanaro made him the focus of the offence and he exploded for 181 yards on 18 touches in the second half. He set the touchdown and CIS single-season record on a 16-yard run in the third quarter, earning a standing ovation when the accomplishments were announced. "There is a sense of relief but Jesse did such a good job of keeping it toned down ... There really wasn't a lot of talk about it in the dressing room prior to the game," Campanaro said. Among those on hand to witness Lumsden's big day was Hamilton Tiger-Cats coach/ex-Mac coach Greg Marshall. "When he came to Mac that first year, he was tall and thin, but very fast," Marshall said. "But he has got stronger and stronger. Now, you look at him with his shirt off and you think, 'Whoa. He's pretty thick.'

The six-foot-two, 226-pound native of Burlington, Ont., set new single-season marks with 1,816 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2004 and established another record with 47 career TDs. He dominated his rivals like few players ever have in the CIS, averaging a ridiculous 10.2 yards per carry.

  1. Anybody got a scouting report on this guy, like one from before the draft, without all the feel good stuff? He has weight, although he's a little tall, and that often means runs high and could be prone to injury. He's plenty fast, does he have wiggle? How is his receiving? Blocking? These types of things may not be taught to a RB in Canadia for all I know.

How different is Canadian college ball? Is it more like CFL or NCAA? NFL?

"After Lumsden was held  to 98 yards on 13 carries in the first half " Yeah, what kind of a performance is that, only 98 yards on 13 carries, at 7.5 yds a carry? Better pick that up pal. Wow.

"When he came to Mac that first year, he was tall and thin, but very fast," Marshall said. "But he has got stronger and stronger. Now, you look at him with his shirt off and you think, 'Whoa. He's pretty thick."

Can he add more and stay quick. Again, I'd like RB at 225 lbs to be 6'0", Jesse could probably use 10 lbs for "padding".

And finally, I still like Shaun, and hope we sign him up, but if not its nice to know that the FO didn't ignore the problem, and felt they could get away with not drafting someone that has the potential to start for us. I am not quite ready to say I am "comfortable with him being a suitable replacement to Sir Shaun", but between him, Mo and Kerry I am not too "uncomfortable".

  2. Also, because of this fine post by Max, if he wants to adopt Jesse, I say he gets first shot.

  3. This is the closest thing I can find to an acual scouting report. I have dug up about all the info I can on the kid. If you're looking for any negatives, I'm sure that you'll be hard pressed to find any......

MCMASTER (CAN) senior running back JESSE LUMSDEN has notified CFL officials that he will not be attending this weekend's CFL Combine... but he has yet to find an actual Pro Day event to attend, although he has been training in Arizona... there has been some speculation that he will either setup a Pro Day closer to the draft, but up in Canada or may get cleared to workout at Arizona State's Pro Day on April 6th, as a special circumstance, since he is a Canadian college prospect and not NCAA sanctioned athlete... he weighed in at 6022, 221 pounds... 31 3/8" arms and 9 1/2" hands at the East-West Shrine Game... school officials have said that he ran in the 4.4 range for the team last summer.
TORONTO (CP) - The NFL draft is just over two weeks away and none of the top four Canadian prospects has dramatically hurt his chances because of poor physical test results.

"Not at all," said Mike McCarthy, a former CFL GM and personnel director now serving as a scout with the NFL's San Diego Chargers. "In fact, I'd say at least one improved himself."

That would be McMaster running back Jesse Lumsden, who worked out privately for four NFL scouts last month. The six-foot-two, 223-pound Lumsden, who wasn't invited to the NFL combine - where many of the top draft prospects are tested in Indianapolis - showed impressive speed for a big man, posting 40-yard dash times between 4.40 and 4.50 seconds.

"Jesse verified he has good speed, good quickness and good strength," said McCarthy, who wasn't at the workout because he was scouting south of the border. "Although he's a Canadian kid playing in Canada, he showed he has the athletic skills of a Division 1 player in the United States.

    "He definitely improved himself."

McCarthy said NFL teams needing a running back now might secure Lumsden, a native of Burlington, Ont., late in the draft - slated for April 23-24 in New York - rather than take their chances trying to sign him as a free agent.

MCMASTER, CAN (March 28th) senior running back JESSE LUMSDEN ran in the 4.5 range in the 40... while also doing a number of other workout and positional drills for scouts at a private workout held in the Toronto-area... caught passes during the workout from long-time CFL standout quarterback Danny McManus, a former FSU signal caller who plays for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats... weighs 226 pounds... 31 3/8" arms... 9 1/2" hands... Carolina, Indianapolis, Seattle and St. Louis were all in attendance for this workout... also has a private workout scheduled with Seattle on April 7th... Dozens of reporters and photographers from Canada have been swelling the ranks of the media at Seahawks practices.

With four Canadians (three veterans and one rookie) participating in camp, there are plenty of Canadian story angles to pursue.

For starters there is Jesse Lumsden, an undrafted free agent signed by the Seahawks last weekend. Lumsden got a few carries in practice yesterday. The Burlington, Ontario born running back is heralded by some as the best player to come from north of the border in the past 10 years and is hoping to impress the coaches enough to stick with the team. The 2004 Hec Crighton award winner created a buzz with NFL scouts after showing off his 4.4 speed in pre-draft workouts.

  6. He sounds like a player. And don't fret about his height. 6'2" isn't all that tall. Rememeber Chris Warren (before he turned into Christy Warren?). Warren was taller than that, and he still had some pretty strong seasons, even breaking 1500 yds rushing. But who knows with Alexander maybe back, maybe not, and two RB's already ahead of him, will he ever get a shot?

  7. I hope he has good numbers in Madden '06. (Due out 8/6/05, BTW) I'll be using him on sweeps for sure.

    Yay!

  8. I think that was my gayest post ever. Right next to the one with a reference to my 'BF'.

  9. I hope like hell he gets a real good look in camp. Then the Hawks send Mo packing, fall back on their collective asses laughing so hard they pull Alexanders franchise tag and tell him to write when he finds work. Kerry Carter will become the #2 guy behind Jesse.

Those are my hopes, my dreeams, my aspirations....*pop*

oh well it was a nice dream.

  10. check, I am not that  worried. Right, Warren, E George, etc, are good tall runners. But not too many tall ones make it, and Jesse is borderline tall for a RB. Also, Warren ran pretty low as I recall, George ran high, and Eddies protoge Chris Brown also runs/ran high, but now he is competing with Henry, cuz he keeps getting hurt. Just saying is all. Plus I like to argue that Mo Morris isn't too small, but I also like to be on the other side of the fence once in a while, therfore Jesse Lumsden is TOO BIG  to play RB in the NFL!

Using Yay! in a post is a little bit off, Blue, but hey, who isn't excited about Madden. And the BF one was much gayer.

"tell him to write when he finds work" LOL, that would be pretty funny, even to a SA fan. Right Shaun, you do deserve more, go get em buddy, thanks for the touchdowns... although admittedly, there are probably more than a handful of teams that would snatch him up w/o having to compensate the 'Hawks. Jax for one. That would be pretty sucky the first game of the season.
