There's been speculation about the Seahawks snatching Kyle Turley from the Lambs. If this intrigues you, then you need to read this article.
I appears that Turley is not going to stay in St. Loser, but it's not likely he will be available until after June 2.
This means that any hope of getting him as a replacement for losing Jones to free agency is probably out the window. But a straight across signing, however, could be just what the Dr. ordered. Imagine a line with Jones, Hutchinson, Womack, and Turley... hang on a minute... yep, that's what I thought, I'm holding back tears.
This is exactly the kind of proactive move that the Hawks ought to make. I know everyone wants to address the defense first and foremost, so do I. But hwen an opportunity presents itself to improve on a good situation, the smart person is proactive and makes the move. This move may cost us the ability to sign someone like Okeafor but in my opinion, it's a move that just makes too much sense not to do.
ReplyDeleteTwo comments, first this site is sweet and thanks for starting it. It'll take me awhile to get used to the posting setup but I think this will be a great place for me, at least until you guys kick me out for being me :)
ReplyDeleteSecond; Excellent strategy on how to get Turley, and on his value as a player compared to Jone and Terry ...Sporting News listed him as the #11 Tackle in the NFL
Quote:
11.Kyle Turley,Rams
6'5" 309 Age 28 7th year
STRENGHTHS: Is athletic and plays with a mean streak. Has a quick first step, plays with leverage and gets adequate pop at the point of attack. Has adequate punch. Is excellent at setting his hands. Understands blocking angles. In pass protection shows a quick set and excellent footwork.
WEAKNESSES: Has a weak lower body. Lacks bulk and can't overwhelm defenders at the point of attack. Needs good positioning as a run blocker to be effective.
BOTTOM LINE: Turley is a supiorior player, and seems to have grown up in ST L.
GRADE:7.3
38.Chris Terry,Seahawks
6'5" 295 Age:29 6th year
STRENGTHS: Has great upper-body strength, shows great range, plays under control in space and has the agility to adjust to targets at the second level. Has the quick first step to combat edge rushers and uses his long arms to ride them past the pocket.
WEAKNESSES: Is a better pass blocker than run blocker. Can be a locker room distraction. Struggles to get movement in short yardage situations.
BOTTOM LINE: If Terry stays out of trouble and plays with intensity he could develope into a Pro Bowl player.
Grade 6.9
3.Walter Jones, Hawks
6'5" 308 Age:30 8th year
STRENGTHS:Is durable, has missed too starts in past six years. Takes great angles to blocks and wastes little motion. Has ideal size, speed, stength and ability. Rarely is beaten by double moves. Is good at anchoring against the bull rush. Uses his long arms to ride explosive edge rushers past the pocket.
WEAKNESSES:Is not a dominant run blocker. Doesn't consistantly move the pile and appears to play soft sometimes.
BOTTOM LINE:Jones' habit of reporting late has contributed to the inconsistancy of the line and robbed him of offseason work that would help him improve.
The bottom line on Jones is my only knock on the guy, but I think it's a sufficient reason to at least consider replacing him. If he wants to sign a REASONABLE contract and come to camp then I'll lay off, but if he wants to keep playing the ego game then I think we should take a page from the Pats gameplan.
Anyway I hope this was helpful or at least informative. :)
Happy posting!
and, GO HAWKS!
Sounds like we all agree, so the big Q will be 'Does Walter sign and show up?'.
ReplyDeleteIf not then what? Because this is a strong possibility, unless we spend a healthy portion of our cap on him. Which would be, in my opinion a really bad idea. (That's a Whitsitt move)
Actually guys, I beg to differ. Turley is a far better RT than Terry, FAR better, he is an animal who plays with intensity, something which Terry does not. Terry (just look at last season) takes plays off, is not very football smart and is a clubhouse cnacer. Turley is a complete psycho who only wants to play and win and NEVER takes a down off. They are two VERY different players, no matter what the magazine said.
ReplyDeleteDid I read that right, Vinny? It looks like Turley was rated the #11 tackle while Terry was rated #38.
ReplyDeleteI dont think it is close to a straight-across swith between the two. Turley is most certainly an upgrade. And it would solve the problem of Gray, because Pork Chop could go to his natural position at RG and relegate Gray as a backup.
I think having Turley on board would help in another way, in that he would have some traitorous insight into how St. Loser handles the Seahawks' blitzing schemes, coverages, etc.. Could be pretty valuable in the film room.
Damn, now I'm tearing up! (And I said I wasn't going to cry)
ReplyDeleteThis sucks! Now I'm going to get all worked up an I'll get my heart broken again. :)
The money wanted question is a good one, I personally think that Turley will be cheaper only due to the fact that I really don't see him as the ego-maniac that Jones is, plus I don't think he has the same leech for a agent.
ReplyDeleteAnd I truely believe that Turley's sthe better every-down player. And when it comes to QB protectors there are few as intense. By the way thanks for posting one of my favorite moments in football history. Turley's 'Headless Defender' imitation. Anyone else remember that clip? Man what an animal!!!
I think Turley's intensity as a QB protector was never shown more than during a post game interview with Mark Bulger. He crowded in while an interviewer was talking to Bulger about the win and screamed at the camera "You see America, this is our QB, right here, Mark Bulger". This of course was during the controversy about whether Bulger or Warner should start. I would be honored to have him on the team.
ReplyDeleteI bet I know what Matt's thinking. :)
