Brees Get the Franchise Tag

Full Story

SO Brees gets tagged. So what?

Well there are a couple of immediate concerns.

For one, it means that if Hasselbeck gets the tag with the Seahawks, it will be an established cap hit of $8.078 million.

It also slims down the number of decent available QB's on the market, thus raising Hass's stock and making him more difficult to sign.

Who is left besides Matt? Drew Bledsoe and Jeff Garcia are facing exile, but will do doubt find a home. Kurt Warner, Brad Johnson, and Mike McMahon round out the list.

Is it me, or are the pickings pretty slim? Rumor has in in some other forums that Hasselbeck will be signed this Friday. I hope so.

Since retro pictures seem to be a hit, I thought I'd keep it going with this one.

Do you think Hass will be next to sign?

  1. There are a few other QB's that will possibly be moving, Rich Gannon, Kelly Holcomb and our favorite of favorites, Vinny Testaverde. These names don't change thigns too much, I think Hass is better than all of them, but the market isn't as slim as it would first appear. And yes, I do think Hass is the next to sign.

  2. I certainly hope this doesn't mean we have to franchise Hass. If we have to then fine, but I would rather use the tag on Alexander, who is the only player other than Jones who is worthy of a franchise tag. Hasselbeck is a great QB and one we cannot afford to lose, but he is not worthy of top five QB money yet. Alexander on the other hand IS worthy of top five RB money as he is a top five back. Still, if it comes down to franchising either Hass or Alex you just gotta go with Hass, we need him here and he's only going to get better every year.

  3. I think strictly by numbers, Shaun will get the tag. Hass's tag price will be over 8 mill, and Shauns will be just over 6 mill.

  4. Besides, if we can use the tag on Alexander, maybe we can get that trade Vinny is always dreaming of, although I would hate to see him go, for the right deal it could be a huge boon for the team. If we were able to get the right kind of deal we could get ourselves that much closer to the Super Bowl. I still don't see it happening with all the free agent RB's and all the RB's coming through the draft this year, but you never know. I remember how the Cowboys built their team by trading away the NFL's best RB at the time for draft picks. Not saying there's a team as stupid as the Vikings out there, but if we could get the right deal, hey, bye Alex, you'll be missed but i'll enjoy wathcing the Hawks in a super bowl mopre than I did watching you run the ball.

  6. For what it would take to pry away Westbrook, we might as well keep Shaun and franchise him.

Both are productive backs. In such a case I think it would be better to stand pat.

  7. I'll have to disagree with ya' on this one Blue. Westbrook is a true WCO Back he's an excellent blocker and is one of the top recieving Backs in the NFL. While Alexandewr is average at best in both those categories.

  8. I know, we'll disagree on Shaun intil the cows come home.

Yaknow, you've got enough ammo against SA to start a thread on it... I bet you'd get some interesting responses.

  9. Nah, can't take on anyone right now. For two reasons, first because I'm supposed to chill for awhile, and two we all know my three main knocks on Shaun (his parttime blocking, his inconsistant recieving abilities and his propensity to bounce around behind the line of scrimmage looking for the Glory hole)and they're non-negotiable. I saw what I saw.

I'm not saying he's not a GREAT runner, he's awesome in the open field, and he knows where the Endzone is, he's just not a WCO TYPE of a HB. We HAVE to have a HB that can catch consistantly
