Newest rumors from ESPN

Here is a quote from ESPN which I found interesting.

"With Seahawks RB Maurice Morris not considered heir-apparent material, word is the Hawks will seriously consider trading for a running back (Travis Henry? Rueben Droughns ?) or signing one in free agency should Shaun Alexander depart. At presstime, our sources put the odds on Alexander leaving at 60-40. "

While I think that Henry to the Cardinals is all but a done deal, Droughns interests me quite a bit. He is a big hard nosed runner with decent hands, who hits the holes quickly. IF we made a deal like this certainly we could get a pick and maybe even another player to go along with Droughns. What do you guys think?

  1. Droughns? Isn't he a FB, he's listed as a FB in the scouting guide, and low on the list at that, ranked #30 among FBs. Not exactly starting material, however if we went to the RB by committee style like Pitt, then maybe this would work for us. He'd be cheaper and would allow a little more $ for signing Draftees.

  2. So I can assume that the feature Bach is the way to go as far as you're concerned.

My only thing is the fact that they're saying that the HBs in this years draft don't have any true stand outs, so do we really want to take a chance on a HB that is a 'possible' starter at best.

I'd rather go after a proven HB, someone that we aren't taking as much of a chance on.

  3. That's what I've heard, too. If you need a back, get one of the first three, because the RB talent is not deep. it drops off severely after that.

    Those three are good, though.

  4. Hell Sho, if that's the case Mo's 5'11 204, and he knows the offense and can catch.

Do any of you really see one of the top Backs available by the time we pick? Or are you saying use any draft pick we get for Alexander for a HB?

Either way I think it's a bad move, we need too much help on defense, the O-line, and WR to go after a HB with our first pick.

  5. Mo is very quick, shifty, knows the offense, and hangs on to the ball.

But if you can lay a hand on him he's down.

I'm having difficulty choosing an analogy-- he either goes down quicker that a teenage couple in a theater-- or I wish my dog were that obedient.

    Actually, neither are good. :{)

  6. The whole reason that I find the idea at least somewhat interesting is this.
As you guys mentioned, Droughns is a very big halfback/fullback, type of guy who might make an interesting one two puch with Morris who is a smaller scatback type. With Strong, undoubtledy at the end of his career and no sure fire replacement for him, Droughns could be his eventual replacement. He blocks well enough and runs like a halfback. Most importantly though, is the draft picks or possibly other players we could get as well in a deal with the Broncos.
See, I, (like Vinny), don't want to waste any draft picks on a halfback, (which is why I still think the smartest move is just keeping Alexander) but since everyone seems to want to trade SA, then this move makes some sense to me. Droughns put up awesome numbers last year (with the Broncos of course, so take those numbers with a grain of salt) but more importantly is his size and power. I watched him run in a couple games last year and was impressed with his burst through the hole and his ability to move a pile. He is also quite the blocker. I was envisioning thunder and lightning redux with Morris and Droughns, as well as Strongs eventual replacement, (or Alexander's if he proved to be a good enough starting halfback).
I just think the idea has merits, but of course it depends on what else we could get along with him.

  7. BTW Vinny, you really need to throw out that old scouting guide you're using, it's way off. Droughns spent most of last year at halfback not fullback, and he's a MUCH better player than what they have him listed as. You need to throw that magazine away, because every time you quote numbers out of there they are crap, or are old numbers. That magazine had Terry and Turley listed as similar players, and nothing could be further from the truth, now you're saying they have Droughns listed as a fullback, and not a very good one, when he would have been by far the top rated fullback last year if he had actually played that position. But he played halfback and put up eye popping numbers there. The magazine is either old, or just flat out sucks Vinny, trust me, toss it, it's crap.

  8. Droughns really impresses me, in spite of the Broncos' zone/chopblock scheme.

I remember seeing him carry three players three yards to the first down marker, after they had him stopped, almost down with his knees bent at the line of scrimmage. It was a WOW kind of play.

You might be on to something with the tandem of Droughns/Morris. I think Droughns is a better runner than a blocker, I could see him in a tandem backfield where BOTH players could be a threat.

It's a viable alternative if we lose Shaun.

BTW: Losing SA to anyone has to cost AT LEAST two #1 picks, or straight across for another pro bowl caliber player of similar age, i.e., the Portis/Bailey trade of yesteryear.

  9. Imagine being a linebacker or safety facing the Broncos, when they hand the ball off to Shaun Alexander... egad, that should tighten some jock straps.

  10. Monkey, what the hell are you talking about? While I admit that the guide is dated, it is in fact very accurate.

And as an example...Turley was ranked #11 among Tackles with a 7.3 Grade, while Terry is ranked at #38 with a grade of 6.9, now you tell me how these are close.

I think I'll stick with my guide, after all it's printed prior to the season starting hence the listing of Droughns as a FB, after all, till the injuries to the HBs in Denver he was a FB.

  11. Too bad the defenses we faced last year didn't have the same jock tightening reaction to Shaun as you do Blue. :)

  12. The media guide you are using is based on the season before. It's like a season preview.

That's like playing madden 2005 now. All the player's ratings are basically coming from the scouting of the previous (2003) season. Everything is skewed by old news. Carolina is awesome. Miami is no slouch.

Since the '04 season has been played out, you guide is old news.

What does your guide say about Ben Rothlesburger(sp)?

  13. His arm strength is better than most NFL QBs. Throws downfield passes on a line and passes with accuracy and velocity on the run.
Reads coverages well and makes adjustments. Lacks elusiveness and acceleration. Is experienced. Is the most physically gifted QB in his class. He will be a better QB than Eli Manning but will probably spend most of '04 watching and learning from Maddox and the Steeler's coaches.

Pretty accurate, accept that it took him a lot less time to figure things out and get into the lineup.

  14. I'd still like to see the Hawks do something with Mo and Carter. With a seasoned O-line with Pork Chop in his rightful place and a healthy Terry or someone better at Right Tackle who knows what kind of production they'd get from the guys we've got.
