Hawks sett to sign Walt

  1. Shonuff, great find. This makes me very happy. It also gives me hope for the other free agents. I was assuming that they were going to franchise Walt, and sign Hass. This gives them the freedom to franchise Shaun, assuming that they sign Hass soon. It also saves us some money, with a 9 million hit (after signing bonus) per year instead of a 10-11 million hit. Very good news.

  2. How big is this? It's big enough that we may be able to get not only Hass and Alexander back, but Lucas as well. This is an incredible thing considering the obstacle of no persident. This could go a long ways to staightening out the perception problem the FO has. Maybe We simply need to reward our interim guy with the president label and make it official. He has gotten it done and deserves to be rewarded somehow. I am impressed.

  3. Of course this is just one deal and there are several more to go, but this is a BIG BIG deal and one I personally didn't think would happen. I thought we'd be forced to franchise him again, instead I am surprised with a 7 year deal. VERY NICE! This is the kind of deal that can be an icebreaker, the kind which can begin the avalanche of signings we need to get done here.
I say the next thing that must be done is a deal with Hasselbeck, along the lines of Penningtones deal. Then we can use the franchise tag on Alexander, and work on resigning Lucas, and if money is left over, even Okeafor (for the right price of course).
Geez, this news has made my day, and should get Vinny all fired up. I can see it now, all the I told you so posts from Vinny. Of course, this is still only one deal, but I will be the first to admit it, if this triggers other signings, then Vinny was right and all my panicking will look silly.
For now, there is still too much to yet be done to start saying I told you so, but it appears that Vinny might have been right all along, and I may have been wrong. We'll see.

  4. I told ya' so. :)

  6. What about my head?

Hey, I just noticed the poll, is voting now cheating?

So the countdown is on, we need to sign Hass in the next 5 days, so we can tag Shaun on the 22nd.

  7. Sorry 'bout your' head.

And imagine that, the Hawks making even the off season exciting(gut wrenching). :)

  8. Is anyone else just freaking Giddy right now? I'll admit that aside from Cromwell, Jones is the Seahawk I've had the biggest complaints about for the past few years. Mostly because of the lack of a long term contract, which, right or wrong, I blamed on him. Now he's signed up for the long hall (drafted and going to retire as a Hawk). With the others falling in line soon (IhopeIhopeIhopeIhopeIhope), this could be a great offseason.

By the by, Does this mean Walter's coming to training camp?

By the by 2, Has anyone noticed that the PI hasn't even put the article on their page, much less a new blog?

  9. Excellent point about training camp. I hope he's forced to show up, I think a lot of that was a lack of power on Holmgren's part to force him in, but now, who knows.

And on you second point, that's exactly what i hate a bout the media, thye take up all kinds of space knockin' the Hawks, but when they make a possitive move they don't even get a nod.

    God that's irritating!

  10. Yeeeessss!!!

    Yesyesyesyesyes yes yes yeeessss!!!

First, I'm happy for Jones. I'm glad he's in a position where he could possibly retire a Seahawk, and doesn't have to wonder about his future every year, and he's getting his due contract. I never felt good about the way the Seahawks treated him with the Franchise tag.

Second, I'm happy because of the message this sends to the world about the direction this team is heading. A seven year deal to lock up arguably the best tackle in football is a real commitment to excellence, and signals to players and agents that the Whitsitt days are over. Hopefully this will have a dominoe effect on the other FA's

Third, it gives us another chance to hang a jersey to the rafters. If Jones dedicates himself to this team and actually participates in a training camp, this guy could have as good of a career as any lineman had ever had. We could use some players that could fit into a 'legendary' category, because as you know, the Seahawks are not perceived as having any legacy to speak of.

Fourth, he's a (expletive) fine player, and having him on board will win us some games. Bottom line.

And yeah, I guess the poll is a bit of a cheat now. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

    GO SEAHAWKS!!!

  11. Blue,
I love the poll, too bad we know the answer now, but my suggestion is to continue to do those polls. This site is looking better and better all the time! Man this place is fun! You could always run a poll of who is next to sign or on who will get the franchise tag. Course, those are obvious ones.
Vinny, we've still got a long ways to go, but this is certainly the right direction! YOu may have been right to be so patient after all, but the jury's still out on that, lot's more work to do before we can celebrate. Rienfelt is looking pretty darm good right now though considering his interim label and all.

  12. I'm actually starting to think teh interum title was a screen to guard against chsing away potential Prez Candidates. He could wind up with the title.

And I agree, they do have a lot to do. But who here knew they'd been talking to Jones and his agent for a couple weeks? I'm thinking we're in for several more announcemnets before Friday.

WOW! 7 years shocks me actually, but of course, this is a non-guaranteed contract unlike baseball contracts, typical in the NFL.

Good for them to wrap this thing up, finally! I'd like to see Jones get hazed in training camp, considering it'll be a new experience for him. Likely won't happen of course.

I still say they'll franchise Shaun. Too many QBs on the market, and not enough starting jobs. Hass doesn't seem to be all that highly regarded outside of Seattle.

  14. I am extremely excited. This is a great first step, and now the front office needs to finalize some other deals.

There was some interesting ideas talked about on KGR this morning. Options like franchising Alexander and then shipping him off to another team in a trade (which would set a precedent, because apparently that's never happened).

I was listening to Jones' interview, on the above mentioned KGR, and he seemed pretty optimistic about the chances of getting our other top free agents signed, saying he hopes a "domino affect" happens.

Two weeks to go, a lot of work to do, but definately a surprising move that sheds a good light on our offseason.

  15. Hi guys, I like this new forum a lot better than the p.i. Great news about Walt! I've seen a couple posts talking about the salary cap and Jones taking up 9 or 10 mil. It's actually way less than that, which is why teams give big bonuses and lots of years on these deals. Jones gets $15 million right up front, and then his base salary this year is probably the veteran minimun which is a little less than $1 million. So he gets around $16 mill this year, but the bonus gets evenly divided against the cap over every year of the deal. So he only counts a little over 3 million against the cap this year. Lots of room for other people, especially if they do the same kind of deal with Hass.

    ReplyDelete
  16. cielo, welcome, but you're a little bit off. You're right about the way the bonus is distributed, but his salary is actually going to be 7 million a year (50+million a year over 7 years), in addition to the 2 million from the bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The total deal is about $52 million and that includes the signing bonus. The first year of these big bonus deals always has a very low base salary, usually the veteran minimum. That's the whole point of these type of deals. It gives the player a whole bunch of cash up front and it gives the team a lot of salary cap flexibility. His cap number this year will be between 3 and 4 million. Once the details of the deal are available I'll post a link to show you what I mean.

  18. Maybe my calculations are off, but isn't this a 7 year, $52 million deal? With the numbers you posted, that's $26.5 million base, which even after you add the $16 million signing bonus, is still $10 million short? If you're right, I'd love it. A $4 million hit is great, but I just don't see it happening.

  19. I was wrong, that's what I found as well. That's outstanding!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey, nice work finding those numbers guys! Where'd you find them? After the last several years of Whitsitt not being able to get a long term deal done with Jones, Mike Reinfeldt gets a deal done in just a couple of weeks where Walter gets his big fat cash up front and the team still has the cap room to sign lots of other people! It seems like they should either hire him as the president, or drag their feet until the end of the draft and give him a chance to work some more magic.
