informal poll

Just to get the pulse of you guys out there, I thought I would post another sort of informal poll. Feel free to tell me exactly why you think what you do, that's what makes polls of any kind interesting.

What would you do if you were the GM, here's a list of some of the best names available (potentially anyway). I want to see what direction you guys would go in this offseason, woould you draft a LB and pick up a RB? Would you go get a WR and and draft a DE? What would your priorities be?
I realize that some of the options I list here may not be available March 2 (my birthday in case anyone cares) but let's pretend they are all available.

For each category list the direction you would take or state why you don't think that category is vital.

Would you;
Draft a DE. (who)
Resign Okeafor.
Sign John Abraham.
Sign another DE (who)

Would you;
Draft a LB. (who)
Sign Chris Claiborn.
Sign Kendrell Bell.
Sign Julian Peterson.
Sign Edgerton Hartwell.
Sign Mark FIelds.
Sign another LB. (who)

Would you; (provided Alexander leaves of course)
Darft a RB (who)
Sign Rudi Johnson.
Sign Corell Buckhalter.
Sign Najeh Davenport.
Sign LaMont Jordan.
Trade for Travis Henry.
Pay for restricted Brian Westbrook.
Sign another RB (who)

Would you;
Draft a WR (who)
Sign Jerry Porter.
Sign Plaxico Burress
Sign Mushin Muhammed (if he gets cut as expected)
Sign T.J. Houshmandzedeh.
Sign another WR (who)

Would you;
Draft special teams help.
Sign Rod Smart
Sign another Special teams player.

  1. I'll start it off just to break the ice and let you guys get a feeling of what I am trying to get at.

    First I would draft the best DE available, I don't much care who that is, the draft is deep at DE.
    Also Abraham will be expensive if he's not franchized, too expensive in my book. Okeafor is a tweener who is good but not great, we can do so much better here. Let's get off the field on third downs!

    Second, I would draft the best RB available, (again a deep draft not partial to who). The only Free agent I would look at is Rudi Johnson (maybe LaMont Jordan) but I think we could do better, even in the second round of the draft.
    This would take my first two draft picks.

    Third, I would go sign Jerry Porter. I also like Houshmandzedeh but if Porter's available I make him a very high priority. How much would he help Hasselbeck? TONS!

    Fourth I would sign Julian Peterson. Bell is great when healthy, but he's never healthy. Hartwell I would look hard at, but Peterson is the class of this group and one of the best in the game. Although it's unlikely the Niners will not franchise him, Peterson is the kind of big play difference maker, who just happens to be good at every aspect of the game. He would be HUGE for us.

    Fifth, I would sign Rod Smart, easily the best special teams guy available and probably cheap, for what he provides. We could finally get a game breaker return guy here with him.

    So I would take my first two draft picks and go best DE available then best RB available, (we still have Morris should the rookie flop).
    After that I would go best player available since we have needs everywhere, but none so great that we need to reach for a player.

  2. I also heard Ruben Droughns name mentioned a few times and would definitely consider him as well.

  3. monkey, once again I agree with (almost) everything you said. I like Mush just a little more than Porter though, but doubt it makes a difference, as neither one should be available to us, likewise with Peterson.

    He Hate Me is interesting though, he's exciting to watch, and could give us a boost on Special Teams.

  4. This'll get some hackles up.

    Sign Okeafor, we don't need more inexperience on D, and if it's a matter of signing a vet, why not sign someone that knows the system.

    Snag LB Peterson(obviously)

    Go for HB Henry(trade that anchor Jones)

    Go after WR Kevin Johnson of the Ravens(just announced he's begging out of his final year)

    Smart would be great.(if we can keep the STers on STs they'll be much improved this season. Remember, we lost guys like Rouen,Bannister,DD Lewis,Tracy White,& Kaz)

  5. Rudi Johnson's off the HB table, he was franchised today.

    Looks like we may get stuck with Lord Aleaxnder.

    I'm still hoping for the Franchise tag on him and a trade for a couple first round picks.

  6. First,
    SHONUFF I forgot about Patton. I think he would be terrific here, I like that idea quite a bit actually.
    Vinny,
    I saw that about Rudi, I think you're dreaming about Alexander though, first, if we franchise him, it's because he's proven to be a GREAT rb and now amount of grousing about his blocking abilities on your part will change that. Second, NO WAY, could we get two first rounders for him, if we could I would be the first one to make that move. Two first round picks for ANY of our players would be a coup! Two first rounders for Alex would not only insure that we could adequately replace him, but add a defensive stud as well. Not going to happen, but as much as I like Alexander, for two first rounders I would make that move in a heartbeat.

  7. Hey, I have lurked around this site and the PI site for a while, you fellas are very entertaining :-) Love the haiku smack on other teams boards.

    IMO, resign Okeafor, and draft a DE in the 2nd or 3rd round; hope Roth falls to our 2nd rd pick. Okeafor seems like he would be a great mentor, even if he is a little out there..

    We'll definetly draft a LB, I like Blackstock, not sure if he is worth the 1st rd pick yet. He would be great playing in place of Chad Brown when he gets hurt. It would be great to sign Julian Peterson or Mark Fields, but I don't believe either will be available at a decent price. I think Niko can come on as MLB.

    If Alexander leaves I would trade Travis Henry for K-Rob straight up. Or Droughns. I believe we need a humble back who catches, blocks, and runs downhill, and doesn't have gaping wounds on his back. SA is a great runner, I just don't believe he is the best back for our system. If he signs a decent contract, then great, but if he wants real big money, let him go. I wouldn't mind letting Mo and Carter have a shot either, or even a platoon of both. I just hope they don't use the tag on SA, or anyone this year. I think Lucas is the best candidate, but the franchise salary would be a little high for him, he isn't a top 5 CB. Also believe they should draft an RB in the third or fourth, JJ Arrington looks underrated. I think he could be a Ladanian Tomlinson type back with a little polish, cept JJ has a normal size head. LTs head is tiny, and that just freaks me out.

    Sign David Givens. He is a RFA, no telling what NE will tender him with, but Seattle could beat it. He would be a great #1/2 along with D Jackson.

    For ST, I say stick with what we got, hope for far less injury... I like the new ST coach, and I think that ST is the most affected by coaching. Thanks. Josh.

  8. monkey, you just don't get what I'm saying do you, it's not just Alexander's lack of blocking(back bone), it's that coupled with his lack of recieving ability and , as has been mentioned above, the fact he doesn't run down hill.
