How can you NOT root for this guy?

I'm sure all of you folks have been reading this already, but it has been such an enjoyable piece, it stands to open this up for conversation.

Lofa Tatupu's Camp Diary has provided an insightful glimpse into a great player in the making. Lofa's attitude has shine through as team-first; confident but not assuming; the beginnings of a leader, but not without earning respect; agressive, but keeping his head.

Barring injury, I see this man taking hold of the Starting MLB position by season kickoff, and having the season Niko wished he'd had his rookie year.

Along that lines, I mentioned it in another thread, and was wondering what you think: I see Sharper starting on SOLB, Tatupu at MLB, and White on WOLB. I also see Hill taking the starting position from White by the end of the season.

That's my fearless prediction, anyway.

I know it's really early, but - any thoughts?

  1. I gotta say that I like Lewis a lot as well, we'll see how the will linebacker plays out.

  2. Yeah Blue, you keep forgetting D.D. You think White/Hill will beat him out?

I love to be Paulie's peanut gallery. Yeah yeah, what he said.

  3. i think it's going to be dd over white unless his injury keeps him from playing. both of them have been on the team for awhile, and i think lewis is the better player.

the player i don't know about is kevin bentley, and he's been in lewis' spot on the first unit. so my prediction is that white won't be starting unless there's a bunch of injuries (like last season).

  4. I didn't forget DD, but heck- how long has it been since he's played in a game? How much will we be able to use a plyer that was out all of last year, and is missing almost all of training camp? How will he catch up? While I remember him as a better player, it's going to take him a while to get battle hardened, bet used to making good reads, and just getting back in the groove. It's going to be hard for the guy.

My feeling on Bentley is pretty similar. He's not a very physical player. He's quick, has good size, but he's pretty much a finesse guy. I'd much rather see someone who is going to knock the beans right out of Bulger's burrito.

  5. any sentence that contains the words "beans," "bulger" and "burrito" is a good sentence in my book.

Here here, great one. I nominate it to become a header quote since brett didn't.

But regarding that, WLB being finesse players doesn't bother me, as long as they get to the QB. He doesn't have to ring the bell, just get the sack, or even better, the fumble with a non-racially charged tomahawk.

  7. I'll second that nomination, with a knowing nod to the proper non-racially charged reference to tomawking the ball!

Didn't want to go out on a limb and SQUAWk about it!

  8. Not only seconded it, I went ahead and added it!
(I think Blue would feel funny updating the site to quote himself.)

  10. Getting back on topic, the Trib had a throw away piece at the end of today's coverage that Benley is about to be interviewed for the Seahawks.com web site...hope that's not the last we hear from him!

  11. Didn't Lewis get his bell wrung but good. Anytime your out for multiple weeks due to a concussion, signs are not good. Once you get busted like that, it often becomes chronic.

I've got even money between Hill and White, but I expect more of a rotation at the WOLB spot, paticularly to get Bently on the field. I see Hill or White definetley in on 3rd down, but I don't really know.

  12. Here is Sando's response on my take on DD, maybe my take on it is a little off:

Any word on DD Lewis? The guy's got horrible luck. He was out all of last year, and now most of training camp. His projection to start must be seriously dampened by now. All I've seen is that he's out every day, with no word of how much longer is expected. Is he even working out? It sound like he's sitting at home on the couch with his brain in a jar.

DD Lewis should have no trouble coming back and starting unless there is something we do not know about his concussion. Given what we know (Holmgren saying Lewis should be fine), it's probably easier to let him have extra time given where he rates in the pecking order. So far, there are no indications that this is going to prevent him from reclaiming the starting job. The LB whose injury situation seems to be hurting him the most would be Cornelius Wortham, a late-round pick fighting for a roster spot.

  13. I am as hyped about Lofa as anyone, the problem as I see it, is that he needs to beat out someone more familiar with the D and someone with the same kind of smart hard work ethic; Niko Koutouvides.
I'm not saying that he can't or even that he won't, just not right away I think. He will eventually be the fulltime starter at MLB but it may not be this season. I think that he will split time
Lofa and Niko both gettting alot of playing time in the middle.
I wouldn't be at all surpirized if a similar thing happens on the outside. Sharper will be an everydown backer, no doubt, but we have several players who are fighting for that other outside spot and I would not be surprized if we go this whole season without having one definite starter, but rather several guys rotating in and out. I will say this as well, I know that alot of people like D.D. Lewis, because of his speed, but I think that the darkhorse in all of this is actually Cornelius Wortham, who IMHO will by this time next season have seperated himself enough from the other guys that he will be our starter next season, full time. He will begin that seperation this season and gradually earn more time.
Anyway, that's this monkey's fearless prediction.

  14. One more thing, I love the title for this post, and couldn't possibly agree more. Here's one more fearless prediction. three maybe four years from now, the #2 hottest selling Seattle Seahawks jersey (right after Matt Hasselbeck) will be, Lofa Tatupu who will become a HUGE fan favorite. People are (as the title says) gonna root for this guy because...well...how can you NOT root for this guy.

  15. Monkey, it'll be tough to out sell Hasselbeck when Lofa's jersey only comes in Small, Extra Small and XX Small!!! :-)

  16. I have to say that Lofa will be #3, because your boy Boulware is going to be a perrenial pro-bowler.
