Will Alexander Play
I'm just curious how many people think SA shows up and plays to his potential. I think the one year contract was genius since he'll be looking to resign next year with someone else, but will Holmgren use him in goal line situation next year if he only needs 2 yards for the rushing title and a playoff spot is on the line?

I think we should be looking at a very good season. Stats and history would predict 300 carries, 1300 yards, 15 TD, 50 catches, 400 yards, 3 TD, and I can't see why that wouldn't be pretty close.
ReplyDeleteI doubt very much that that situation would play out, however, I wouldn't think that the Coach would make a choice on play call based on what happened last year, or based on any record they were approaching.
In fact, he may actually choose to run Shaun in that situation, just cuz the defense would be looking for QB sneak, or he may just push in the knife again ;-)

Shaun usually puts up good numbers. He has over 1000 yards rushing in each of the past five seasons, and has 3000 yards in the past two seasons.
ReplyDeleteI think the talk about Shaun being in a contract year is exagerrated. Since becoming the regular starter, he gives you around 1200 yards and 15 TDs in a season. He's also good for a catch or two a game and two scores a season. This makes him a legit threat out of the backfield too.
yes, his numbers were up by 300 yards last year, but its not like he's been a bum for five seasons and then turned it on. The Seahawks have always gotten production out of him, and will continue to this season.

im not worried about Shaun at all...all great backs stay great...and he is starting to etch himself as a 'great' back...dont roast me, i didnt say 'all time great'...but he is the 'all time seahawk rb great'...so there.

All I care about is that he continues to improve on his weak spots......pass protection, recieving, and hitting the line of scrimmage. :D
ReplyDeleteAs was said, he's always going to have great numbers, though i think his carries will drop if the passing game takes off as I think it will, check the Packers' HB's numbers in their S.B. season.
And don't count on Holmgren paying any more attention to SA's numbers this year than he did last season, Holmgren's far more interested in 'Team' stats than anyone's personal numbers.

Man you guys, why is it so hard to admit that Shaun, over the span of his starting career has been the most consistent RB in the league, especially scoring wise? Just look at the numbers! He over the last four years is THE BEST RB IN THE NFL BAR NONE going by the numbers! End of story, nuff said!!! I don't really give a CRAP whether he's a great blocker, it means ZIP when he gives us 16+ TDs every single bloody year. I don't care if he has average hands, since most of the time when he catches a pass, it's near the goaline, which he proceeds to take the ball across, (ala last game). STOP ALREADY!!! Over the last four years, SA has been the most dominant scoring threat in the NFLat RB PERIOD! WHat's left to argue about? Isn't the whole stinkin point to score touchdown? YES it is! And he does that better than any RB in football. Now tell me I'm wrong! I dare you! You can't, because the FACTS are the FACTS.

If anything I expect him to get less carries because of our increased passing game, and because this is finally realy and truly, Matt's team. I boldly predict that this year, Matt will be the most valuable player on this team, instead of SA for the first time ever. Matt is poised for a huge year ya'll, just you wait!
First of all, let us all welcome "SimpleHawk" to 12 Seahawks Street. Simple was a frequent poster to the ST site last season, and is joining us after a baseball hiatus.
ReplyDeleteHe's also not too far from me in Albany and we've actually shared a few brewski's during last year's playoffs, sadly after the Hawks had been ousted.
Now, to the matter at hand. As you've indicated, all we have to do is look at his LAST contract year, last year, to see how he should do, barring injury.
I expect that if he takes off in the first few games, especially if he's also picking up blitzes and catching passes more consistently, then the Seahawks will drop a long term deal on him.
If he starts slowly, or reverts to previous "bad habits", we may allow him to play out the year and look for a new back in the draft.
And may we have such problems as wondering what will happen with Shaun teetering on the brink of the NFL Rushing Title again this year.
My guess, is that if he hasn't just fumbled in key situations in the previous few games, then yes, Holmy gives him the ball!
This probably isn't the picture ADP was talking about, but it does beg the question, who really does have "hand" in the Shaun /Seahawks situation??!!

I still think he is the guy to beat for the Rushing Title...but if he does take on blocks more, and plays on 3rd downs more (for passing situations)...he may be subject to injury then...(knock on wood)

ADP - go to www.imageshack.us and upload the picture there. It will give you a URL to the picture than you can then post here.
ReplyDeleteMONKEY - True, the point of the game is to score TDs, but it's also to keep drives alive. Missed blocks by the RBs on blitzes lead to QB sacks, hurries and/or INTs all which tend to kill drives.
Also, when you take your TD scoring back out and replace him with one thank can catch a screen pass, EVERYONE knows what you're about to do. This is why people get on Shaun even though he has put up incredible numbers over his Seahawks career.
I like Shaun and want him to remain a Seahawk, but I'd also like to see him improve on these areas to become even a greater threat to opposing defenses.

ReplyDeleteActually Monkey, though you are right you are also wrong...the best HBs in teh league, the premeir backs, the elite backs, are all-around backs, they do it all well, and you have to admit, if Shaun were that much better he'd have more TDsand more first downs, and between the 40s it teh first downs that really count, and that's a place Sahun is still inconsistant. Yes he's got a shit load of TDs, but it wasn't him getting the Hawks into the redzone, it was Matt. Shaun's had some big runs between the 40s, but he was still very inconsistant, and nearly all his TD runs have come from withing 20 yds of the endzone.
ReplyDeleteSo while he has great numbers, they don't mean much if the team isn't winningm and a pat of the reason they aren't winning is his lack of blocking, inconsistant recieving, and his unwillingness to attack the line of scrimmage. If he were a tough back he wouldn't have to worry about getting injured and thereby letting his QB down, by dodging blocks on bigger players.
IMO, it's time for Shaun to man-up. :)

He can still be takled with one hand, and he's at his best when teh O-line opens holes big enough to run a Semi through.
