Hamlin in Harborview

LATEST UPDATE: Bizarre Coincidence between Brawl and Murder Investigation.

The Seattle Times article today includes a link to a video from KING5 but it show much more.

KOMO TV has a surveillance video of the fight. I can't really tell who is who, but according to the club owner, Hamlin was the aggressor and sucker punched one of the guys.

I got the video link from Sando's blog, and here's his take on it:

No matter what TV reports imply or appear to show, we need to remember that police describe Hamlin as a VICTIM of assault in this case. The police report CONTRADICTS what the club owner is saying here. These are important things to remember in analyzing the situation. The video shows part of the story. It is one snippet.

  1. Guys on the PI Fan Forum are saying he got hit by a pipe in a fight outside a bar, but that's not confirmed. There's supposed to be a 2:30 press conference from Seahawks HQ.

  3. Just picked this up off the ST Fan Forum, which credit's Sando's blog as the source:

Just a fyi: There are lots of rumors ciculating about the wellbeing of Seahawks FS Ken Hamlin following his possible involvement in an incident after the game last night.

I have confirmed that he was admitted to Harborview Medical Center's intensive-care unit following an apparent altercation last night. Additional facts remaing sketchy. The team says it is gathering information and will release a statement this afternoon. This is a developing story. I have been very careful to get the facts right and not move too quickly on this one.

I did leave a message for Hamlin's current agent. In the meantime, I spoke with Hamlin's former agent, Jason Medlock, a few minutes ago. Medlock said he has been in contact with Hamlin's family and is praying for Hamlin's wellbeing. He did not know the absolute latest on the situation, but he did say that his understanding was that Hamlin had been "jumped" outside a nightclub and knocked out, suffering a serious injury. Medlock said the injuries left Hamlin in intensive care. I have confirmed that through other avenues as well.

"We are all praying for him," Medlock said. "We are just hoping for the best."

Medlock said there are no hard feelings from Hamlin's decision to go with another agent; in fact, he said he lives five minutes from Hamlin's home in Houston, and that he has been in contact with people close to Hamlin.

UPDATE: Hamlin's current agent, Lawrence Temple, just called me from the Houston airport and made these comments: "I am en route to Seattle right now. There was an altercation last night where Ken got injured. He is in the hospital. The reports I am getting are that he is actually doing a lot better than initially thought. He hit his head at one point. I have not had a chance to talk to Ken yet. But I’m on my way up there. Everything I’m hearing is that that is pretty precautionary (going into ICU). They’ve been running some tests and things are better than it could have been."

    Hamlin hospitalized after assault
    By Mike Sando
    The News Tribune
Seattle Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin is in serious but stable condition at Harborview Medical Center for skull, brain and hand injuries suffered when he was assaulted outside a nightclub following the team’s 42-10 victory Sunday night, the team said today.
Hamlin will remain in the intensive-care unit for the coming days and could need several weeks to recover, team physician Dr. Stan Herring said during a press conference at team headquarters.
Hamlin was struck on the left side of his head, resulting in a skull fracture and a blood clot that require constant monitoring. Surgery was not expected to be necessary, Herring said, but that could change depending on whether the clot gets bigger.
“He has a skull fracture,” Herring said. “He has a small subdural hematoma and he has some bruising of the brain tissue. He will be kept in the intensive-care unit at Harborview as we monitor him closely for the next 24-48 hours.
“So far, he has done well. After that time frame, if he is stable we will make further plans about care.”
The blood clot was a primary concern. Long-term brain damage was not expected.
“Right now, Ken is awake intermittently and talking to us,” Herring said. “There is no evidence of severe brain injury in that regard.
“He is cooperating and when awake, alert and knows what is going on. … He’s a little confused and tired. We have to wake him up over and over to make sure he is OK. He knows where he is. He knows his family is coming to see him.”
Hamlin’s broken right hand will heal without surgery, Herring said.
“The concern is to make sure his neurologic status does not deteriorate,” Herring said. “At this point, it appears this will be managed non-operatively unless things change.”
Hamlin’s playing status was the least of the doctors’ concerns at this point.
“It’s way too soon,” Herring said. “We need to get him out of the ICU, get him home and see how he does for the next few weeks.”
Team president Tim Ruskell released the following statement:
“Ken was the victim of an assault outside a downtown nightclub early this morning. Ken is in intensive care in serious but stable condition. Coach (Mike) Holmgren and I talked with Ken and his spirits are good considering the situation. We are working in concert with the Seattle Police Department. The fact that this is an active assault investigation prevents us from further comment at this time. As information becomes available we will share it with you. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken and his family."
Hamlin’s agent, Lawrence Temple, was on his way to Seattle from Texas.
Holmgren said he was running on a treadmill at about 7:30 a.m. when he received the news.
“We said a quick prayer for him,” Holmgren said.
Marquand Manuel becomes the starter at free safety. Hamlin has been one of the Seahawks’ biggest hitters on defense. He was a second-round draft choice from Arkansas in 2003.

  7. Thanks to you guys for handling this with class. Hamlin is seriously injured, and his well being is most important. I have a mix of emotions about the situation, i could share, but definitely want to reserve judgement until the facts are clear. Nobody is impressed by the passing of judgement from some guy behind a computer that is only reading conflicting reports about the situation.

    Get well Ken.

  9. from the King of the Cool Head, Mike Sando:

The nightclub owner released a video-surveillance tape to TV stations yesterday. On the tape, we see Hamlin charging toward something out of the picture. I have been cautious in making judgments based on the tape. Imagine seeing a baseball batter charge the pitcher's mound without seeing the clip of the pitcher first throwing at the batter's head. That is the kind of incomplete picture we are dealing with here. From what we know, we can reasonably conclude that Hamlin could have handled the situation better. Officially, we know that Seattle Police consider him the victim of an assault. There is not a lot to go on at this point.
