Huh?

The title for my post will be self explanatory after you read this so bear with me.
In a recent post, ADP brought up a point that I really don't hear anyone talking about, but which I have noticed and has bothered me excessively for the last two seasons.
Why in the world is it, that on third down situations, Mike Holmgren is not going with the guy who is our most dangerous weapon? Why is it that on third downs he pulls Shaun Alexander and chooses to run third and short with Mack Strong again and again and again with the same lousy results? I have seen this exact same play, repeated over and over the past two seasons and so has every other coach in the NFL. Every team in the NFL knows what is coming and it simply doesn't work.

Also, why in the world is it that whenever Shaun Alexander is on the sidelines getting a breather and Maurice Morris is in the game, you can rest assured that the call will be sweep left? I mean every single time for cryin out loud. Again, every team in the NFL knows it is coming!

Finally, and most importantly, why is Shaun Alexander, our most dangerous weapon running the ball, on the sideline on third downs anyway?
I know I am going to hear a bunch of SA haters whine that "he doesn't block and has lousy hands." I know, I know that is what you all will say, but trust me, what we are doing now isn't working any better. Watching Strong get stuffed for a loss on yet another third and short, is humiliatingly predictable. Watching MoMo sweep left every single time he is in the game, is just plain embarrassing.
Is this really the best Holmgren can come up with? I would rather see us throw the ball than do either of those two plays yet again.
If it's true that Strong is brought in on third downs to block, then let him block already!
And if it's true that MoMo is our backup because he is an NFL caliber running back, then let's him bust one up the middle just one single time! Let's see if he can actually run between the tackles once.

Apparently I am not the only one who has noticed this, but am I the only one who is truly fed up with it? Am I overreacting? I cannot see how I am when we continue to fail to convert on third and short because we have become so bland and predictable that the entire universe knows what is coming.

Look, this whole thing is very easy to solve; if you want to frighten teams, and be unpredictable on third and short, here's all you have to do leave Shaun Alexander in the game! It's that simple! Why? Because if he is in the game, defenses cannot simply load up and go after Hasselbeck, because the threat that he can take one to the hole is always there. With Strong or with Morrris the threat is simply not there. The point isn't whether or not Strong can block better, or whether or not Morris has better hands (something I am entirely unconvinced of) the point is that with Shaun Alexander in on third and short, the defense, if it wants to take something away, has to guess. They have a 50% chance of quessing wrong and getting hurt bad. With Alex in the game on third downs, the defenses are forced to play more conservatively, because they have to respect BOTH the pass and the run.
As it is now, they are simply loading up in the box, and run blitzing our pants off. A run blitz, even if we are throwing the ball can quickly turn into a pass blitz which puts pressure on Hass. Thus our third down conversion rate is still MUCH lower than it should be, given the weapons we have on offense.

The bottom line is that we are doing right now, with Strong and Morris is like forcing a boxer in a very big round to fight with one hand behind his back; and in my opinion, until we start leaving Alexander in on third downs, we will continue to have a lower third down coversion ratio than we should have.

  1. the 3rd down calls is the equivilant of a dropped pass...there isnt a difference...you're not the only one monkey...we were killing Arizona and I went nuts when Holmgren tried to pull that crap...it easily was the #1 play that drove me nuts...

everyone talks about dropped passes being a drive killer...think of it this way...3rd and 8, dropped pass, kills our drive...but 3rd and 1 is a MUCH DOABLE situation, yet we technically drop a pass but not converting...

so actually, comparing the two situations and considering consistency of both the dropped pass and and run stuffed...being stuffed on 3rd and 1 is worse, unless the dropped pass is a 20 yard gain or whatever...

ill post what i posted in the monKEYS to the game...
    ---------------------------
the only time a 3rd and 1 worked with Mack Strong is when they did a pass to him last week for 8 yards...

most people would say that he needs to change the play on 3rd and 1 more often, but I think you made a more valid point...putting SA in there gives us a better chance AND could throw the defense off for once...

same play or not. Then again, changin the play once in awhile is always good...I still would like to see a play action on 2nd and 1 or 3rd and 1...and throw a screen pass...

there are a few teams that do a play action, then dump it off to the RB when he run pasts the first tackler...that usually nets nice yardage (4-12 yards) and could be a great play on short yardage situations...our team doesn't do it...at least not from what i saw...I highly doubt ANY RB in the league would drop a little dump pass like that (if you guys even know what im talking about)

    Tackler (LB)
    QB
    RB

play action...the Tackler will bite as if its a run play...then he will notice its a pass play, so he will be wide open for a sack attempt...so he runs towards the QB leaving the RB open...like this

    RB
    Tackler (LB)
    QB

then dump it off...and the RB gets an easy 4 yards before having to deal with the MLB and S'...if you do this with a TE running with him...he can block for the RB...while have a WR block as well...its not a bad play, and its been affective with teams that do it

    (Atlanta does it pretty often)

  2. the only problem with the play i just mentioned is that the QB could take a nasty hit...but never know, could draw a roughing the passer call (oh thats right...our QB is allowed to be choked [SUGGS] but we can't touch anyones QB...nevermind)

  3. Shaun Alexander is the equivalent of having a Lexus 4x4 on the final year of its lease, and unlimited milage to burn.

It's a 4x4, so if you want to, you can take it off road, drive through riverbeds, and do whatever you want, cuz when the lease is up, you drop off the keys and your done with it.

However, it's a Lexus, and it's really not meant for that kind of duty, and if you really take care of it and drive it wisely, maybe you'll get a great deal on it at the end of the lease. After all, you KNOW how the previous owner treated it (YOU) and your already comfortable with where the cup holder and arm rests are.

What I'm saying is that I agree with you, but the strategy with Shaun is really dependent upon what the team feels they'll be doing with him at years end.

If you're gonna let him walk, then run him as often as they're running the Caddilac in Tampa, and get as much free milage out of him before the lease runs out.

However, if you're thinking of purchasing it at the end of the lease, then you'll want to treat it a little more carefully and keep it from taking any major damage.

Like it or not, Shaun Alexander IS the Seattle Seahawks. He's the one the pundits talk about, not Hass, not D-Jax, not Trufant, not Boulware. (not Dancer, not Prancer, not Donner...ummm...sorry about that...I'll get back to the point)

That means that while he IS our most dangerous weapon, he's the guy the other team is scheming against all week. For that reason alone, we should be doing everything possible to use him DIFFERENTLY and UNEXPECTEDLY, which is what other teams do successfully.

Hell, in the right situation, I'd even like to see him throw a half-back option back to Matt!

  4. this thread makes me want to put some rules in place:

    1. no more running on 3rd and 1 with Strong
    2. no more conservative play calling
    3. no more calling Wistrom Winstrom
    4. no more 'Kaz did good' knowing Tracy White would of done better
    5. no more worrying about the media's thoughts
    6. no more waiting for respect
    7. no more mr. nice guys

im IRATE watching espn go through highlights, and dont even as much as MENTION Dan Wilson's last inning, and didn't even show him...all they showed was Ichiro...Wilson was a huge part of saving Baseball in Seattle and this is just another example of the media being pieces of crap who pick favorites...if that Seattle team never happened, I wouldn't be here today, yet alone into sports...

imagine how mad I would of been if I didnt just drank a Mountain Dew!!!...#1...only thing ahead of Seattle stuff on my all time favorite things/people list (this includes my family and friends)

  5. Here comes the dogpile...........
The reason as I've said all along, is that SA's runs come in situations where the defense is caught off guard, the rushing game is inadequit in situations where a defense knows the run by SA is coming. He's not unstoppable and the line is overpowerable.

I say the reason for SA's success 'is' Mike's playcalling. Shaun' gains are made in situations where the defense isn't thinking run, but pass, since that's the way Mike designs it. Using the Pass to set up the Run. We are not overpowering teams on most run plays but are instead getting them (forcing them) to back off the line of scrimmage.

What Mike's doing is 'working', I still say that Mike and Stump have a 'reason' for not using SA (what that reason is who's to say), I think it's because of his running style and 'intinct/habit' of "bouncing". They don't 'trust' him to get third and short when the entire defense is thinking RUN. The Hawks are historically weak in third and short, both with and without SA, and boith using the passs and the run. It starts with the O-line, and as I've said for months(years), the only thing that's wrong with the offense is the O-line(no push at the l.o.s. and poor pass protection (consistant pass protection)

Alexander is not going to endure an entire season of 25-30 touches per game. Did you ever think perhaps they don't want to 'risk' SA in between the 30s, hammering for short yardage is a lot different than pounding it at midfield. Do you think SDahun wants to go out and pound it for anything less than 6 points? I don't, personally. He's 'not' a physical player.

  6. Well said alba, much more to the point and definitly much nicer than mine.

I'm just tired of hearing how without SA this team would suck.....I call BULLSHIT!

Any HB with decent field vision would be putting up similar numbers, it's more a product of playcalling and blocking as it is the skill of the player. (other than field vision, which I admit SA has 20/20)

I just don't see the equation, how is it SA's the onlt player being 'headlined when it was Jackson who's number 3 I beleive, in receptions, and Matt is like #5 at QB.I just don't see why it's all Alexander all the time! (Stupid FF leaguers!)

And another thing....So if Matt and the passing game starts hitting 90% and starts scoring are you still going to want to stick with SA?

If we can get down the field in, say, 8 passing plays and 2 running plays as opposed to 2 passing plays and 8 run plays(with our HB)which way would you rather go from a health standpoint?

  7. LOL
That may be the first time in my blogging career that I have read two posts that I complete 100% disagreed with every single thing said in them.
Vinny you are the best man! LOL
You think exactly different than me but it's a good thing. Gotta have differing opinions, even if all of yours are wrong. LOL!

  8. And ADP, I can't believe you'd even jokingly suggest Matt take one more hit than he has to out there. (as a chill runs down my spine) Matt is every bit as important to this offense as SA is. Perhaps more so.

  9. Thanks monkey. Some day Vinny, some day. And one thing I will reiterate, Vin, if Shaun is in on third down, and everybody is thinking run, that is when a pass would work. As pointed out, our "trick" plays, Mack up the middle, Mo sweep, those are now predictable. Play action with Shaun, quick slant Bobby, Joe, or Stevens isn't. Shaun in the flat isn't. And I have them all on my FFL team.
