monKEYS to the Game

Week three already upon us, and this game, which should be an easy victory for the Hawks, scares the beejeesus out of me. Sure we're at home, sure we beat the Falcons last week, but that's the problem. Will there be a let down this week? Last week in a home opener, it was fairly obvious that the Hawks were playing inspired football against what they knew would be a tough opponent. Will the inspiration be there against the Cards?
With my fingers crossed, and my knees shaking a bit, here are the monKEYS to the game.
Offense: I have only ONE key for the offense this week:
monKEY #1 Get Shaun Alexander on track early and keep him on track all game long. Shaun MUST touch the ball at least 25-30 times for us to be successful this week. Last season we split with the Cards home and away, in our loss SA got 12 carreis for 57 yards with no TDs. In our win, SA got 30 carries for 154 yards and 3 TDs. Any questions? I will not even bother elaborating on that key, the numbers speak for themselves.

Defense: I am sure I will be saying this all year but I must say it again:
monKEY #1 We must get a strong and consistent pass rush throughout this game. The matchup that I will be watching this game will be the matchups of Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald against Marcus Trufant and Andre Dyson. If Curt Warner is given enough time, even he can find ways to get the ball to these very dangerous recievers. However, if we can get to Warner early and often, we will rattle him and shake his already paper thin confidence, and he will make mistake after mistake after mistake. The Cardinals offensive line is in all reality, pretty pathetic, we SHOULD be able to do this, it's not as if our D-Line will be trying to get around the Pats O-Line or the Steelers O-Line. This is the Cards, and in spite of what the "experts" think, they are still a lousy team, as their play up till now, and their record, clearly proves.
Now here's the part where I say something that may not seem to make much sense, but trust me, it does if you think about it. The best way for the Cardinals to get Warner ontrack is to run the ball effectively early on. I know that on face value that doesn't seem to make sense, but here's the thing; if the Cardinals can run the ball early, forcing us to cheat our safeties up, to help against the run, then not only will Trufant and Dyson have a much more difficult job, but the D-Line will be focused on stopping the run and NOT on getting into Warners facemask.
So having said that, here is:
monKEY #2 Make the proper adjustments to what the offense is trying to do. We MUST be able to stop the run early, then make the adjustments necessary to carry out the pass rush.Sports Weekly, picked us to lose this week (actually they usually do, as does nearly every sports publication around) but the reasons they gave for us losing are that they believe that, (and I quote) "Warner will pick the Seahawks secondary apart." As usual, the "experts" are full of it. While I grant that it is a possibility, (anything is possible in the NFL) the ONLY way this could happen is if they establish a consistent run early on, which would slow down the pass rush.
The way I see it, the Cardinals will no doubt try to establish the run early on, but the way our DT's and LB's have played, I don't see the run as nearly as much of a threat as the passing game potentially could be. So what we need to do is make them one dimensional early, take the run away, right out of the gate, then pass rush, pass rush, pass rush! If we can make the Tards one dimensional, then Warner will throw picks; if in the other hand, they can establish the run, thereby slowing down our pass rush, Trufant and Dyson will be in for a very, very long day.

Quick comments: We may want to pay special attention to Chike Okeafor who will no doubt be trying to make a statement against his former team.
Considering the fact that more experts around the country picked the Cardinals to win the division than the Seahawks or even the Rams, the experts are nuts! As I have said all along, the Cardinals were simply the "sexy" pick this offseason, but the reality is that, the Cardinals are still a 5-6 win team. Their defense is decent, (not nearly great), their O-Line is horrendous, their running game is avaerage to less than average, their recievers are young though very talented, and their QB is hack, a has been, whose confidence is so brittle, that at the first sign of trouble he cracks. What the heck were the "experts thinking? Until the Cards get a young QB that they can groom, to replace Warner, the Cards will still be short of being a real contender for a playoff spot.
My biggest worry, which I alluded to at the beginning of this, is that the Hawks come out flat, coming off of the big win vs. the Falcons. The only real hope the Cards have of beating us, is that we play soft, is that we lack the intensity of last week. This is the kind of game that seperates the contenders from the pretenders. This is the kind of game that we SHOULD win, and therefore, f we want anyone to take us seriously, we MUST win. The thing that makes the great teams great, is that they win games like this, they win the games they should win. Let's hope that this week we take care of businees, and that Hasselbeck figures out how to play for a full four quarters, instead of just two.

My prediction: Seahawks 24 Cardinals 18

  1. ok, we have one of the best overall secondaries in football...one of the more deep ones (when healthy)...and easily the best young secondary...exactly why i dont listen to experts...so i disagree with one thing monkey---the experts will NEVER take us seriously...they make up excuses when we win big games...dont let us use excuses that are obvious when we screw up (worst injuries in nfl...ref screwjobs...seem to jus 'disappear' in thin air to the world except us)...we could win the super bowl, and we'll be fluke...im done with the experts

great minds think alike...not sure how many i gave them, but Arizona wont win more then 6 games...id be REALLY shocked if they somehow pulled off 7...or 6...

keep in mind one thing...the Cardinals have 2 good receivers...we have 4...we also have a superstar RB (the best in the NFL RBwise...LT and Edge pass him if you include all purpose)...and the best oline in the nfl...and good TEs...and a better QB...unlike us, they have no secondary...

this is Hass shot at 400+ passing yards...if he doesnt get 300 im going to start scouting QBs...

keep in mind that although the Cards dline is good...their DTs are a bit overrated, because so much focus from olines go to the DEs after they established themselves last year...AND...

they have two very dangerous players in particular: Okeafor and Berry...one of those two, no matter what will be automatically eliminated by playing against Walt...whom pushed pro bowler Kerney to the sidelines twice last week, once out of bounds...the other guy might generate something, but with SA starting to pick up blocks more, im not as worried anymore...with Mili out, Hannam gets playing time, and hes a blocking beast...

Dansby is the only threat on defense...but we have too many receivers and possible targets, they will confuse themselves enough to give up ridiculous points

the Giants ate them for 42...we're way better on offense then them as a whole...at every position in fact...we should kill the Cards...

you explained how they need to play the game best...try running first...unfortunately for them, RBs havent done squat against us...their WRs are scary, but with that oline and our dline wanting a HUGE game; and actually collapsing olines several times so far this year, Warner will have to beat us on his own...

    har har...

    funny stuff...

38-14 Seattle; Hass with 418 yards, SA for 135, Defense gets 3 picks; forced fumble; and 6 sacks...

that should be accomplished in the best case scenerio...no reason why the team cant execute that scenerio...

Atlanta coach Jim Mora said we have an outstanding defense...nothing fancy with schemes, but executed perfectly...our defense relies on speed and coming from a million different angles...im not worried...this character thing is keeping the execution perfect for us through 2 games (keep in mind field position from turnovers explains the huge score from the Jags...not the defense)...exceution equals shutout...Arizona better be worried...and their nails better be bitten...

this will be their reality check...the Rams beat them...now they get the KING of the division...

lets sweep the birds this year (Atlanta, Philly, Arizona)...king of the flight

  2. I think your prediction may be a tad conservative, but I see you have the cards needing a 2 pt conversion. That usually good news!

Monkey mentioned about stuffing the run early, this shouldn't be too hard, isnt Arrington banged up? This should not be an issue.

The Cards biggest offensive threat are at WR, but Warner is fragile in body and mind. Control him, and the WR's don't matter. Also, Boldin may still have memories of The Hammer layin' his ass out. Perhaps some alligator arms may come into play.

Here's the keys as I see it.

The offense must make an adjustment at halftime to compensate for the Cardinals defensive adjustment. I'm tired of seeing us rollup on somebody in the first half just to try the same things in the second, but failing since the other team actually made adjustments.

Win the field position battle. We lost it miserably against JAC, and JAC controlled the game. We controlled it in the first half against the dirty birds, and ran it up. Then those aviary turds controlled the position in the second half and made a valient comeback.

Just trying to keep it simple. Most of the other stuff we can do as we have been, and we'll be okay.

  3. monKEY O1, "Shaun MUST touch the ball at least 25-30 times for us to be successful this week " I'd say that every week. Why didn't anyone try to remove Alexanders 17 and 16 yard carries and figure out his YPC this week? Where are you guys?

monKEY D1, our pass rush, I don't see a problem, not at all. I posted a bunch of links today about how messed up their O-line is, their QB is a mess, as is her husband. I don't know about ADP's predicted 6 sacks, thats a lot, but 3 to 4 is entirely probable. Screw it, 6 sounds about right.

monKEY D2, "make the adjustments necessary" Also could be said every week, this is a big problem for us. I think its pretty obvious that the crazy 2nd quarter only scoring and allowing the opposition to score in the second half almost at will has the attention of the staff, given Hasslebecks commenting on it (and orange slices) all the time, so hopefully they'll get it figured out. At least they are aware...

"Until the Cards get a young QB that they can groom"... uhhh, McCown. The real problem is Denny Green, that guy is near as nutty as Martz.

"the Giants ate them for 42...we're way better on offense then them " There it is.

"Atlanta coach Jim Mora said we have an outstanding defense" Well, he couldn't have said, "They really suck, I guess the only excuse is we had a injury to our virus infected superstar, plus we won last week, and had to fly for over 4 hours  to get here." I don't disagree, but coachspeak is coachspeak no matter what.

Finally, I agree with ADPs stat and score predictions. I'd even give us one more TD and one more FG, just for fun. Their 14 will come late, if ever, garbage points... We'll never be nervous, but someone will still be pissed that our D gave up points late instead of "putting the game away".

  4. lol well the 6 sacks and other stats i predicted were best case scenerio...the Cardinals matchup favors us and kills the other two division rival...

unlike the Rams and 49ers...we have a secondary...a damned good one at that (even when Tru is struggling)...Warner doesn't have wheels so he cant bail like Vick did...look at it this way...Atlanta has a decent oline...and we constantly rushed Vick to where he either threw it off balance, or ran...Warner cant do either at this point...and they have a MUCH WORSE oline...hes gonna be stuck taken the punishment...thats if the refs dont call unnecessary roughness when we put our hands on him...

this is why Arizona is a threat to St. Louis and San Francisco...they matchup horribly against us...didnt we have to beat them with Dilfer's instant replay speeded run? Both games we were depleted with injuries...so we prolly would of killed them both times anyway...

but yeah, my predicted stats were more as a best case scenerio...and breaking down the matchup...not the teams...the MATCHUP (media 'experts' read that and repeat...thats how i keep pulling up upset predictions out my ass)...the best case scenerio should not be hard to reach---even 6 sacks

i like the mon-KEYS topics...helps assure people that im not just some idiotic Seahawk fan...i do have SOME smart things to say (on rare occassions)

  5. God I love this new feature of 12SS!

Editors Note: Curt Warner was the pro bowl rusher for the Seahawks. Kurt Warner is Brenda Warner's husband.

Offensive Key: Score early, score often! I agree with making the Cards one dimensional and taking them out of their running game, and the best way to do that is to start putting up numbers. This will also get us points in some quarter other than the second, so we can stop hearing about THAT from all the pundits, like blown leads and dropped passes.

Defensive Key: Well, there's 3 defensive keys really, turnovers, Turnovers and TURNOVERS! There will be at least a +3 turnover ratio in this game for the Seahawks, which will lead to some easy points in the second half as the Cards hurry to try to get back into the game.

Special Teams Key: DO SOMETHING SPECIAL! Stop getting penalties, run the right way, and get some freakin yards!

Anticipated MOPs for this game: Shaun Alexander, Peter Warrick, Marcus Trufant and Grant Wistrom. SA will get his carries and get his yards. P-Dub will catch some balls and contribute on STs.

On defense, the Cards are going to get sucked into going after Tru as an easy mark, and after his meeting with Holmy, will come out with a chip on his shoulder, getting 2 picks. And Grant Wistrom is the type to take Okeafor's comments personally, and he'll get 2 sacks on Warner and one recovered fumble.

  6. In my humble opinion the key will be puting Mr. Brenda on his back early and hard. In fact I think the defense should sell out 2 or 3 times in the first series--even if it means giving up a huge play.

History shows that when Mr. Brenda gets an early thumping, his ability to pick a D apart goes way down for the rest of the game. You need to break his confidence before he tastes success. It'll shift pressure to their running game--which can't handle it.

I don't think we should do anything special for the running game--focus on stopping the passing game. Make Boulware repeat 50 times, "I will not bit on the play action."

Finally, we need to get a huge, wicken lesibian to go to the game and kick the self-rightous crap out of Brenda.

Sorry, you have to have a typo in there, you meant lick, right? I'm sure that's already on the menu...

  8. "We all have a lot of thoughts about it," Seahawks defensive end Grant Wistrom said during training camp when asked about Okeafor's comments. "We'll keep it to ourselves. We'll wait until we play Phoenix."

That would be Sunday at Qwest Field.
