monkey's Banana Peel Award

The award given to the offensive and defensive players who best slip up the opposition.

For those of you who like the idea of the Seahawks flying under the radar, media wise, you should be happy again today; once again the National Media has found someone other than the Seahawks to talk about.
Despite having the best record in the NFC at 8-2, because the win was a squeaker, and because the Bears handed it to the Panthers, the Media is once again off the Seahawks bandwagon and is now hopping onto the Bears. Those who were saying they needed to see more from Seattle are reiterating that opinion, and for those who just don't know much about the Seahawks, (most of the media) they once again have someone else to talk about other than the Seahawks, to their apparent relief.
Be that as it may, a win is a win, and at 8-2 rapidly approaching homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, we cannot avoid media attention much longer.

  1. Well done monkey, have to agree on both, Rocky is going to get paid this offseason. I wonder if he is a product of "contract year", or if he is really taking strides? I'm on the fence, and suspect it is a combonation of both.

I think D.J. had a great game, and agree with your assessment. I like him as the 3rd WR over Joe J.

Matt needs to get warmed up soon, as I said in the monKEYS to the game, and I think that even more now. I see a bit of a shootout next week, and frankly, homefield very well may be the difference.

Speaking of nat'l media, Peter King sucks ... again. If only we'd won that Dallas game!

  2. great work as always, Monkey, ramblings included!

I was hoping that by being there, I might at least get an honorable mention for this award, but winning on a failed 2-pt conversion, I guess I really didn't do my job!!!

you know I'm protective of my boy Kelly, but you can't argue iwith the truth. However, I can live with folks continuing to pick on him as long as he continues to make as many good defensive plays as he gives up, and as long as the rest of the defense continues the improvement in other areas.

sure, it would be great to still have Ken back there, but not at the expense of having guys like Darby, Fisher and JJ, not to mention having the $$$ to sign Matt, WJ and SA. All I'm sayin g is that we gotta take the good with the bad, and I think we'd all agree that we've come out NET AHEAD as far as our defense from last y year.

Don't also forget that most of the few interceptions we have as a team were caught by none other than Kelly Herndon, so it's not like he flat out sucks.

I'm not sure where Ray Rhodes was yesterday, but while I watched the 49ers claw there way back into that game, with us givign up big plays and soft defense late in the 4th, I felt his presence near!!!

  3. I completely agree about the DJ comments. When the season started I felt the Hawks still lacked a legitmate deep threat. DJ seems to be showing he can become that. I'm liking the idea of finishing out the season with Jack, Hack and Engram being backed up by JJ.

  4. I am undecided about #3 WR because I really like what I have seen from Hackett but I really like what I have seen from JJ too. To be honest, they are both legitimate #3s who play very differently, one is the better deep threat guy while the other is the better hands possesion type guy, both have been invaluable to this team when our starting 2 were both out.
I'd say make them both number threes, they're like both 3 1/2.

alba I agree that Herndon doesn't flat out suck, he's just the very obviously weak link on the defense right now. I groan everytime a pass goes his way cuz he usually gets beat badly. The thing with the picks is that everyone throws his way so much, of course he'll have the most picks, no one is throwing at Tru anymore.
Still Herndon is not complete crap, he is a better option at CB than alot of other teams have. I am not just completely trashing him, I am just pointing out that other teams game plans are all revolving around attacking him, and that for the most part it is working; not enough to beat us, but enough to make things interesting. Almost all of the catches Lloyd made yesterday, especially the big ones, cam against Herndon.
I wish we had Dyson back at full strength but to be honest, I didn't think he was much better when he was playing there either, teams were attacking him the same as they are Herndon when Dyson was healthy.
Bottom line though, no team is completely weak link free, it just can't happen in todays NFL, and what you said about being ahead in the long run salary cap wise, and with all the free agents we were able to pick up, I agree with 100%.

  5. How does Peter King cover the NFL and know so little about it? He's got the Patriots ranked ahead of us? Not to mention the Cowboys who we alread beat. What a moron!

  6. "Jack, Hack and Engram being backed up by JJ.  " there it is... I agree, Engram back to his #3 role. I just didn't want to be the first to say it. 2 WR sets should be Hack and Bobby, until Jack gets back, then Jack and Hack, leaving Bobby to pick up the slack, and JJ to provide redzone knack. And now I've proved that I am whack... :-(

  7. The Bears said it was quite easy to shut down the Panthers offense...

"I don't want to say they're one-dimensional," Adewale Ogunleye said. "But his first read is always to the same guy. If he doesn't get Smith quickly, he's going to hold the ball and start looking around and he's a guy who you know you can get his feet moving."

They will NOT be able to do that with us...I have a hard time believing their offense can put up 24 points that they inevitably would need to, to have a chance against us...NO defense can shut down a multidimensional offense that executes as great as ours (not including the SF game)...Cowboys can be brought up, but we didn't even have our starting receivers

As for Rocky Bernard...is it true he is leading all DTs in sacks??? Thats amazing, considering he is a backup...

For Hackett to become the 2nd Receiver, it has nothing to do with Bobby...its all to do with Hackett...he needs to get the elusiveness our receivers are good at doing (Djack, Engram) to make his short play ability a lot better. He is great on deep passes, but we can't just throw it deep to him all day...he has to work on his short catch, turn, run with jukes style that our main WRs do so well...

I like him as a perfect #4 for us, only because he wouldn't fit well at the slot...although Bobby is great in the slot, Hackett really doesn't fit well as the #2 with our passing style (dink and dunk)...great at catching, and speedy, just needs to be able to make a 6 yard catch turn into a 12 yard gain

  8. "he has to work on his short catch, turn, run with jukes style that our main WRs do so well"
He had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL catch like that early in the game. He was on the right side, faked a streak down the sideline, and as the CB bit on the fake, he turned around and caught the pass. Then, with his back still to the CB who was rapidly closing, he juked to the left, and spun back to the right and upfield for a 1st down. There's no way he even saw the CB closing on him, but he juked him to the ground anyway.

  9. yup, exactly like that...

im not saying he doesnt do it, or even saying he doesnt do it well...its just we havent seen him enough to really trust him in such a huge role in our offense...especially when it comes to our receivers style Hass is so accustomed to...

  10. i'm super glad we won that game, but i never thought we would lose either. Alexander is great but i would have loved it if JJ got that touchdown his family was at the game or was that Alba holding up the uncle Joe sign.

Hacket and JJ are both legit #3 recievers. Hacket is a good deep threat but right now i would take JJ because i think he's more reliable. If Hacket does become the #3 man do you think we will resign JJ i believe he only signed a one year deal.

I thought that our pass rush was good this weekend, but the Dbacks were blowin it. Even Trufant got beat a few times, (take some of the blame off of Herndon. I don't know what happend but the coverage was pathetic yesterday.

  11. Don't be subtle about pinning a little blame on Trufant. I expect alot out of him, and he has been way to inconsistent for someone that is supposed to be of his caliber.

  12. to add to Check, Trufant has been disappointing on a couple fronts...

potential top 10 cornerback, but he hasnt gotten there, and fell off, if anything

but people seem to not notice its not just his coverage...his playmaking ability seems to of died down...

  13. I coudn't agree more with the stuff said about Trufant. He is NOT seeming to blossom into the type of CB I thought he would. He is right now just a slightly above average CB, which is why I mentioned that I thought the Hawks would be lokking CB in the draft. Herndon is the worst of the three right now, but only slightly worse than Dyson who has not impressed me at all. And Trufant is better than Average but is nowhere near the superstar he could be. He is not playing like a first round draft pick IMHO.

  14. Do you think it could have something to do with the scheme? Are Marshall and Rhodes playing too passive in the secondary? Or do they know that our corners are average at best and are trying to protect them as much as they can?

I'd rather see more aggressive coverage and checking at the line, which would give the D-line an extra fraction of a second to put pressure on the QB.

This might be good plan for the Giants, since their receivers are tall, and could probably eat us up if we play soft coverage.

Also, we need to get after and rattle young Eli early.

  15. I don't know why it is but I think you may be right alba. I certainly agree with your assessment about what we should be doing, especially against the tall Giant recievers.
I get in trouble when I start questioning the coaching staff too much so I try to avoid that but I have NEVER liked the soft a$$ way our corners play in this system. It is designed to be soft so as not to give up the big play, but the irony is, playing soft invariably leads to giving up the big play. Never really liked Rhodes schemes, still don't. Bend don't break always eventually breaks ALWAYS.
