monkey's Banana Peel Award

The award given to the offensive and defensive players who best slip up the opposition.

I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.
In some ways it is hard to call this an ugly win, because our offense was anything but ugly, it was a sight to behold, but man that defense today was flat out U-G-L-Y!
We'll have to play a whole lot better next week defensively if we want to even stay in the game against the Colts high powered offense.

12-2 and on the way to homefield advantage throughout the playoffs!
Is this for real? I mean somebody pinch me, have I really finally lived long enough to see my lifelong favorite NFL team in the drivers seat to the Superbowl?

On second thought, don't pinch me, because if I am dreaming, I like it, and do not want to wake up.

  1. Monkey great post. Vick isn't as bad as you make him seem, but i'll take Matt over him every day of the week and 4 times on Sunday (once for every quarter). Hasselbeck is really heatin up, and i'll say it our offense is pretty much unstoppable. All the other NFC contenders don't scare me. Briing em to Qwest light em up send home gettin ready for the draft, thats all there is to it.

I know i said this before but I HATE ZONE DEFENSE! STOP IT! IT DOESN"T WORK!

  2. o-meezy, perhaps he's not as bad as I made him out to be...not yet anyway, just give him five years and he'll be even worse.
The guy cannot pass. What will he do when he can't run either?
He is a great athlete and a crappy QB IMHO. Have you seen his passer rating? It's attrocious! That's because he can't pass. He's a small RB in QB clothing, he's just the next slash waiting to happen, five years from now, people will be wondering why they were all freaking out over the guy, mark my words.

  3. It's gotta be reality, cuz if you were dreaming, *I'D* better have a major role in it!!!

  4. Monkey -

Great post. While I agree that the zone defense has killed us this year, I realized something this morning which may also explain no sacks against an old QB and average O-Line, which is we're finally feeling some effects of having Sharper and Lewis out at linebacker.

While Bentley did have a good game, he's playing behind these other guys for a reason, so overall, our defensive talent at linebacker has taken a step down. However, with DD Lewis healthy for the playoffs, it should correct itself in a big hurry.

I agree 100% with your estimation of Michael Vick, and wouldn't trade him for a chance at being Ron Mexico for a weekend! Not only was he average at best, and failed in an attempt to clinch HFA for the Seahawks, but his lackluster performance knocked my overconfident ass out of the Undercard pool!

On to Rex Grossman. Think of it this way, if Matt was out and then Seneca got hurt, and David Greene managed to win a few games for us, we'd still be happy to see Seneca come back in, wouldn't we?

What I'm saying is that Rex Grossman is a average to good QB, but head and shoulders above the rookie Orton, who did a bang up job in his Trent Dilfer/Brad Joshson-like "just don't lose games for us" roll.

Once teams have a chance to gameplan against Grossman, he'll come crashing back down to earth, and the Bears will return to being a team with a good defense and a suspect offense.

The offensive balance of the Seahawks is having such a profound effect on me that I've canceled my Viagra perscription! Offensive balance and the ability to sustain long, hard, penetrating scoring drives, with a hard nosed runner is the hallmark of champions

Our defense concerns me, but with Herndon, Dyson and Lewis due back from injury when it matters most, I think we'll be alright.

Special teams nearly cost the game for us yesterday, and if Bob Casullo wants to keep wearing his green outfit in the Emerald City, he'd better whip those boys into ship shape. A blocked FG, giving up a 1st on a fake punt, and failing to down that ball inside the 5 is just not acceptable on this championship caliber team.

  5. I think Mike Vick may be the worst coached QB in the league. And I like Mora, other than him smelling those salts all the time. If he is still running around in five years I'd agree with you, but he has progressed as a passer, and should continue to do so. I think people said the same about McNabb and McNair when they first came into the league.

    Monster... LOL.

Re: Hass, good gawd y'all, that boy is on FIRE! That scramble/pass to Stevens, priceless. I also liked when he got tackled and still threw the ball (out of frustration?) That ball went 20+ yards, thats pretty good arm strength from your knees still dragging a guy around. And the Titans still didn't pick it? There were two of them standing there. Maybe they heard the whistle, but usually a defender will catch the ball no matter what, even a bounce pass. Weird.

Re: Zone, I mentioned in in the 12-2 thread, but this O is exactly the kind that will carve zone, big receivers. We're still the best in TDs allowed. But still can't disagree with the O getting D award. They weren't that good yesterday, and Bentley was the problem, IMO.

  6. Well I'll say this much. If Michael Vick doesn't learn to throw the ball efficiently quickly, he will have a short career.

JoSCh what was wrong with Bentley. I thought it was Babs and the other CB's.

  7. Actually I think you are both right, Babs was a huge problem getting beat deep at least twice and in general not covering well at all. For that matter, Tru looked like crap most of the game too.
But Bentley was siply out of position all game long, he led the team in tackles because the Titans threw at him in the zone all the time, and he couldn't stay with their TE's at all, he was constantly chasing them down from behind.

Like I said, no one on this defense played well yesterday, not the linebackers the secondary or the front line, no one.
It was just ugly all around.

Again, the defensive scheme didn't help at all, the Titans ate up the zone all game and the coaching staff didn't adjust until it was almost too late. FOrtunately they did eventually, but it was our offense that bailed us out in this one.

  8. Excellent choices, but I think you might have been a bit hard on the defense. They DID manage to stop the Titans when it mattered most.

But then again, the real game-winner was the final Seahawks drive that kept the game out of the hands of the defense. I believe it was over 5 minutes long, 3 first downs, and 3 knees to the turf to seal the victory. Had the offense missed one of those third downs, and given the ball back to McNair and company...well, lets just say I'm glad that didn't happen.

Also, even though I'm an outsider here, and should just mind my manners and let it pass, I've noticed a disturbing trend that I feel I must point out, even though it makes me sound like an obnoxious, holier-than-thou know-it-all. And I SWEAR I'm not holier-than-thou...

I've noticed a couple people using "clique" instead of "cliche". A cliche is a old, overused phrase. A clique is an exlusive and overly close-knit group of friends.

  9. Finally someone else to help patrol and diminish the destruction of english on this blog. Welcome aboard Hwm, CitK and I usually jump on these guys, but to be honest, telling monkey when he's on a rant (and he's always on a rant, I'm sure you've noticed) that he's wrong or mis-spelled something or mis-used a word does absolutely nothing, it's a lost cause. He's lost his banana over zone coverage.

  10. Agreed. We just keep handing him bananas and stay out of the way.

  11. Whether he writes about cliques or cliches, he knows his stuff more than most so-called sportswriters, especially those east of the Mississippi, when it comes to the Seahawks. If giving him bananas is the best way to help him keep it up, I'll be happy to slip him one now and then...

  13. No actually it is not for real. Arizona, SF, STL,(all times two), Houston, Tenn. and Philly combined with the NYG fiasco and a pathetic D means a 2nd round ouster. Pitt, SD, KC, Mia, NE, Atl, Car, TB, Den, Dal, NYG and Wash would all love the High-School sked you found in your fishnet this year.

  14. Giants fiasco, hmm? Explain to me the referee apology letter we got for screwing us on 2 TDs.

For Dallas, explain to me what happened in the final 2 minutes of that game. Dont tell me any crap, I want you to tell me everything you WATCHED in those last two minutes. You did watch it right? Like you watched every one of our games this season? Maybe you didn't and listened to the media, who watched every one of our games this year? Poor misguided soul...dont be bitter you got a reality check.

Dont tell what the media spread around...explain to me how the Titans ate us alive. It wasnt the fact half our secondary is injured was it? No, it had to be because Seattle sucks. 12-2 is nothing, our schedule (which we created ourselves, and had full say over) is nothing. After all, the only thing you can do against bad teams is lose...thats what championship teams do. They barely win against bad teams, and lose the rest. They dont blow bad teams out on occassion.

As for Atlanta, we beat them in a game that wasnt as close as the score...explain to me why. If you watched our games, or listened to the media who watched all our games, you should know what happened in that game.

How about Washington's game...care to explain every detail of it, realist? Enough with the sarcasm, the media doesn't show the facts because they dont watch, and you listen to them...am i right? Should I bring up the apology letter after that game? You know, don't you?...the bad penalty...the obvious worse penalty given to any team this year...but you know what happened...

If werea true realist, you would bring up how Jacksonville barely beats everybody they play, winning by a whopping one point over a team we killed 41-3 a week ago, despite an injury riddled defense. Thats not because they suck like Seattle does...its because they are great, right?

We have a nice line for you to get in...you can wait behind Peter King, John Clayton, Michael Irvin, Adam Schartz, your entire St. Louis Rams roster, every Referee, and the entire PAge 2 from ESPN.com

I hope you will join us in February...its going to be lonely in Seattle with the whole team all the way in Detroit and all.

  15. Realist. Go check out the Colts schedule and come back and let us know how it compares?

Twice with the Texans, the same NFC West cupcakes you say we played, the Browns, Ravens, and Titans (twice)

Better yet. Now that I've done it for you. Don't come back at all!

  17. Who is this realest guy he should change his name to the stupidest, or dumbest, i think he's a sorry lambs fan who couldn't find anything good about his team so he's tryin to find somethin bad about the seahawks try harder.

  18. Realist reminds me of Buddy Ryan's comments about Cris Carter as he shipped him off to Minnesota..."All he does is catch touchdowns".

Well, some of our victories may not have been pretty, but all this year's Seahawks team tends to do is "win football games"

  19. I have a sneaking suspicion that realist is "police and thieves", aka "lemonverbana". And since none of them show up much, I wouldn't humor any of them with much of a response, as much as I can appreciate your arguments adp and alba.

That said, "Buddy Ryan's comments about Cris Carter as he shipped him off to Minnesota..."All he does is catch touchdowns". " was pretty classy IMO. He could have said "All he does is snort coke and chase hookers" or something. At least he said something positive. Realist comments are simply designed to be inflammatory, while retaining their tragically uninformed nature, Buddy's were healing, and true.
