Surprises and Disappointments

As the 2005 season winds down to an end, with only one more meaningful game on the schedule, I thought we could turn our attention to the biggest surprises about the Seahawks this year, and of course, the biggest disappointments.

The biggest and best surprise, of course, is the organization itself and the position the Seahawks are in. Best record in the NFC. Longest active winning streak. Playoff bye week wrapped up. Home field advantage well within striking distance of the fearless talons!

Drilling down, this surprise is heightened when you look at a roster on defense filled with perrenial second teamers, over-acheiving rookies and a few cagy veterans. Specific surprises have to include the contributions of Lofa Tatupu and LeRoy Hill as rookies, and the impact that newcomers Chuck Darby and Joe Tafoya have had in our defensive tackle rotation, and specifically in raising the level for Tubbs and Bernard.

Defensive disappointments have to include Jamie Sharper and Andre Dyson winding up on IR, the Ken Hamlin situation, and Marcus Trufant suffering a bit of a let down this season. On the offensive side of the ball, I expected much more out of Peter Warrick and am not quite sure what's holding him back.

I don't want to get into too many specifics, so it leaves the slate open for you to provide your own takes on surprises and disappointments in the Comment section, but I will name my biggest Surprise and biggest Disappointment.

On the Disappointment side it's got to be Special Teams coach Bob Casullo. When he was hired, a big deal was made about him being a special teams maven, and having no aspirations to become a coordinator or otherwise rise to a different coaching level. Looking back on the season, our special teams have not been that particularly special, and almost are getting worse as the season wears on.

The season started with Josh Scobey fumbling away the openig kick return. Josh Brown rarely kicks the ball beyond the 10 yard line, and the opponents drives often start on wrong side of the 35. Last week there was the blocked FG and the first down given up to a fake punt. If it wasn't for Tru sniffing out the fake FG, and the Darche recovery of the kickoff fumble, both in St. Louis games, the season would have been completely underwhelming, other than Josh Brown's consistency on Field Goals and PATs.

Of all the choices, my biggest 2005 Seahawks Surprise is none other than the franchise RB who is leading the league in rushing, Shaun Alexander. As the start of the off-season was looming on the horizon, and things were still not worked out with his contract, I thought this was going to be the death knell hanging over another promising Seahawks season. Even after signing the franchise tender, I worried about his contract situation becoming a major distraction, and him begrudgingly playing out the year with disinterest and apathy. Instead, he not only is having a career year, but he's improved aspects of his game, such as blocking and route running, as well as established himself as an emotional leader and spokes person for the team.

So there you have it, Alba's Surprises and Disappointments for 2005.

What are yours?

  1. I'm surprised that you're surprised by Shaun's performance.

He's playing for respect, notoriety, a contract(from someone), accoplishing his goals he's set for himself.

I was sure he'd put up his best numbers yet considering the above mentioned reasons.

That and the further improvement on the O-line.

My biggest surprise/disappointment, the passing game. I was sure Matt would put up at least 5 or 6 400 yard games. (maybe next season)

  2. Along those lines, I'm surprised that Holmgren has relied so much on the run. In the past, even with good runners, he's seemed reluctant to let the running game succeed too much. It's as if he's been embarassed if his running offense is more successful than his passing offense. This year, however, he seems to be enjoying the great year Alexander is having, and is calling the plays that lets Alexander have all the success he's having.

  3. My biggest surprise.

Lofa Tatupu: I am here to confess and all the your stupid comments that i get are well deserved. It's draft day and i'm sittin on my sofa watchin the draft. We trade up in the second round and i'm really pumped. Then we draft Lofa Tatupu. In my head i go Lofa who. I was pissed we traded up in the second round to pick a guy who was projected as a 3rd or 4th rounder i was goin crazy. I was okay in drafting a center in the 1st round but Tatupu in the second made me nearly explode. So I their i admitted it I am a fool for not trustin Tatupu but hey i don't think alot were estatic either. So come draft day next year in Ruskell I trust and won't be mad at any picks until they get on the field and play. Ya'll can give it to me now if u thought he was a great pick.

    Biggest Dissapointment

Defensive Backs: This group been through alot this year with injuries and Hamlin gettin beat up etc. Lat year our DB's were the bright spot of the defense this year it seems to have changed. I expected alot of picks with the addition of Dyson and Herndon who are both quality starters maybe next year.

    Honorable Mentions

Leading league in sacks: Who could have predicted that. The defense has the most sacks in the league. Wow thats all i can say Wow. If u told in training camp that we would lead the league in sacks i would have said okay and just laughed and i am an optimist thats how unbelievable it is.

  4. OFFENSE

    QB

Surprise - NFC's #1 QB...by a longshot...finallytook his game to the level I have said hes been playing the last two years

Disappointment - His fashion, and hes from Boston

    RBS

Surprise - Mack Strong making the Pro Bowl...its about freaking time...Mo Morris got a lot of playing time, though inconsistent, he did get a 100 yard game...Leonard Weaver's stiff arm is NASTY...and for Shaun, well its surprising hes still here

Disappointment - Mack Strong finally getting noticed almost too late, as it saddens me he has never been to a Pro Bowl until now...Shaun Alexander is still being spelled by the national media as 'Sean', and 'Shawn'

    Receivers

Surprise - No more drops, DJack and Engram were the best tag team for the first chunk of the year...Hackett has emerged and warranted the loss of Pathon...Pathon was a bust...Mili was 290 pounds, and lost his starting job to...Jerramy Stevens; who stepped up about 3 levels to where we thought he could be...Ryan Hannam has become a blocking funkmonkey...Urban was released, and then brought back...JJ has become one of the most dangerous red zone threats in the NFL, and one of the best signings one could muster at a small price; you'd think at his age and after all those injuries, his career was all but over, and instead, hes having career games left and right, and a career season

    Oline

Surprise - Walter Jones allowed a sack...Hutch being more aggressive...Locklear being one of the best RIGHT Tackles in the NFL; taking on the likes of Kearse, Strahan, and Seahawks (and human) killer, Leonard Little...Chris Gray lasting as many straight games as he did...Tobeck playing Pro Bowl caliber...

Disappointment - Walter Jones allowed a sack...Chris Spencer didn't get into the starting lineup (moot considering Tobeck's performance minus the penalties)...Oline still being regarded ONE OF THE BEST in the football...I honestly think this line is a level above the next groupeasily

  5. DEFENSE

    DLine

Surprise - Sack lead...Fisher being a bargain...Rocky being the leader in sacks of all DTs; and hes usually a backup...Tubbs and Darby being a dangerous duo...Bailey coming in very rarely, only to make a HUGE play in his few snaps...Terrill being a local media hero...Wistrom not getting much done on the stat sheet; and getting bashed despite the fact that he is facing LTs, and still have been pressuring QBs...Cochran and Moore getting cut

Disappointment - Tubbs and Darby not being proven as a dangerous duo on the stat sheet...Wistrom has not warranted his contract yet...Moore getting cut

    Linebackers

Surprise - Tatupu shutting everyones mouths, taking the league by storm, and leading a very underrated and young defense, despite injuries going all the way up to our coaching staff...Leroy Hill being more than a PR specialist, and earning a spot as the starter; not to mention he still IS a PR as well...Kevin Bentley has been more solid than we would of thought...DD Lewis has been consistent; though others would argue...Jamie Sharper is injured for the first time ever...Niko hasn't been getting much time...Wortham has been solid on ST...Kaz has been great on ST; kinda like the gunner Bannister was; bsakhfkfhsakhlTRACYWHITEsdfja

Disappointment - Sharper's injury...Lewis still keeps getting lingering injuries...Tatupu not getting credit for his POSITION in the ROY Race; hes been getting a ton of love, but the MLB is a huge arguement noone is making...Leroy Hill getting overshadowed a bit; though he has been noticed; also not enough ROOKIE AMBUSHES...Bentley is starting a little bit...Wortham hasn't shown much so far to be sure whether he'll still be here next year...Kaz knocked White off the team...Tracy White is off the team...Tracy White is off the team...Tracy White is off the team

Tracy White is off the team

    Secondary

Surprise - Dyson's huge game shocked me; I knew he was a playmaker, but it came outta nowhere...Herndon has been solid when in the slot...Trufant getting bashed though he has been solid with a rough game here and there...Babs has been a BIG PLAY, and clutch...Hamlin's situation; after playing like a Pro Bowler early on...Howell hasn't done much; even on ST...Manual hits like Hamlin and almost covers as well...Boulware avoiding the Sophmore Jinx; turned into a great SS...Jimmy Williams has been solid at times...Pruitt hasn't been to shabby on ST

Disappointment - Dyson's injuries; lack of playmaking early on...Herndon's injuries; and being exposed when starting...Trufant not taking the next step...Hamlin's situation...Babs having to start as a result; and falls down in coverage a lot as a result of that...Howell on ST

  6. ST

Surpise - Kaz earning his keep; sa;llTracyWhitejkas...Scobey has been a sexy pickup; earning several nicknames and scooby snacks; great work as a Gunner, and Solid on KR...Williams hasn't been as great as we'd thought on PR...Josh Brown nailing 50 yarders all the time because if the team is any closer its usually a TD; and apparently he has learned how to plow DTs...Rouen has been decent

Disappointment - Josh Brown's kickoffs haven't improved much...Jimmy Williams hasn't been good on PR consistently...Tracy White is off the team

    Coaching

Surprise - Holmgren using trick plays; listening to fans and players; still making a few bad playcalls that hes been fried for in the past couple years; his medical incident earlier in camp...Marshall has been pretty good calling plays with a little bit of help from Rhodes...Rhodes' problems...Cromwell not getting fired because of the drops; but dramatically changed everything showing it wasn't his fault

Disappointment - Soft Coverage on defense...Rhodes' situation...Holmgren still makes a few bad play calls (Draws on 3rd and long; Strong on 3rd and 1; which has been fading thank goodness); also the uncertainty of Holmgren's future, will he be back?...Casullo hasn't made our ST great yet; despite the fact that we have a nice group of players working there; they miss TRACY WHITE and Alex Bannister

    Front Office

Surprise - Whitsitt is gone; and suddenly we're awesome...Character thing worked out better than thought (I thought it would definitely help...but not THIS much)...Ruskell has been working harder than we are used to seeing from the FO...Reinfeldt is BACK...and finally, Paul Allen making the right choices, listening to the experts instead of moneyfreaks

Disappointment - Getting overlooked; as I feel Ruskell is hands down the Executive Of The Year...Reinfeldt not getting enough credit for being an accountant on steroids

Dedicated In Loving Memory To Tracy White's Seahawk Career...

  7. I went all out, and those who have time should read it...though I understand if some ignore it or skim it...I took the risk of that simply because I wanted to see what the season looked like on paper, and in perspective...wow

  8. Surprise: that this wasn't a typical Seattle team. After jacksonville, I thought we were destined for another mediocre season. After the Washington loss, I thought we were done. But we've bounced back to be one of the best teams in the entire league. I have friends who ask me if the yearly Seattle collapse is coming, and for once I'm not fearing one.

I was also surprised with our defense. I don't think they got enough credit for this season. They're young and will get better. I'm still an advocate for helping our D out in the draft, but not as much as I have been in past years.

Disappointment: On the same token, our defense makes me worried. We enter the postseason with theams like the giants and Panthers that can throw the ball around. I know we beat NY before, but they moved the ball well. As good as our defense has been this season, its been suspect at times. The consistancy, especially in the secondary, has been disappointing.

  10. Only a few!!! Lol

I was big on Tracy White because of the reasons you mentioned...plus he played very well last year when he was forced to start becaus eof injuries (not to mention he later got injured)...

He was pretty awesome on ST too...just be glad you weren't around (or much) when he was cut in favor of Kaz...I went off (and Bentley, too I believe)...though both worked out pretty well this year...but still...White was my favorite LB and local reporters duped me into believing he was staying (75% chance most said)
