So what are we up to?

Seahawks | Alexander Deal Discussed? - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 6 Jun 2005 18:12:21 -0700

Adam Schefter, of NFL.com, reports the Seattle Seahawks have quietly discussed a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars where they would trade RB Shaun Alexander for a third-round draft pick. The strange part, according to Schefter, is the Jaguars are the ones balking at the deal. Right now, they're not willing to pay the Seahawks or Alexander.

A third round pick???!!!
A third round pick???!!!
A THIRD ROUND PICK???!!!

  1. Wow! That's insane! I refuse to believe that the NFC's leading rusher isn't worth more than a third round pick!
    Great find BTW.

  2. if the Seahawks did that trade...I will automatically drop the ENTIRE respect i built for Ruskell

this would flat out piss me off

  3. Could it be that Toefield or even Taylor would be involved in that deal somehow? You would think he owuld say so, but that's the only way this deal would make any sense at all. Taylor is always hurt, but when he does actually play he's awesome.
Perhaps, RUskell is thinking of what he could do with the over 6 million he would save, perhaps he would turn around and get what's his name form the Bills?
I don't know...the Jags just don't seem like a likely trading partner to me, and I would hate to have to face Alex week one! None of this seems to add up to me!

  4. this completely threw me off...

the thought that Ruskell even thought of this is confusing, given this offseason...

just when i start trusting him, something comes along to make me doubt him...but he continued to gain my trust...and now ive lost it again...

    this has me paranoid now...

one freaking comment from SA...and the whole world blows it out of proportion (im sorry but that comment was heat of the moment...those kind of things happen, they arent even on the level of TO or Spreewell)

  5. I said it on the Times site, and I'll say it here.

Alexander is gotta be worth more than a 3rd round pick. I understand wanting to avoid distraction during the pre season, and a potential hold out situation, but that's just wrong.

I would have to hear more about this deal, like what ELSE they might be giving us, before I'd be anywhere near happy with it.

And what the hell is wrong with the Jags balking at this deal? It's a cherry picking man.

  6. And in the interest of full disclosure...I own one of these Seahawks GameFaces pictured with this article. It was bought for me as a gag gift, and it's the old logo, but I keep it with my other Seahawks stuff.

ANYONE ELSE WANT TO OWN UP TO HAVING ONE OF THESE?

  7. I just got a little bit more clear info from Mike Sando, whom I myself asked about this situation (albeit...for some reason i had a name on there logged on...'slicer'...wtf, eh well...that was my nickname anyways)

    heres what was said:

Nothing has changed. Teams haven't wanted to give up draft picks for a player with a one-year contract. That was true on draft day and it's true now. If Jax or anyone else suddenly wants to make a deal, that's breaking news. Adam is talking about a non-deal and saying he thinks the deal should be made.

Let's be clear about what Adam wrote, too. KFFL got it close but here is the actual note: "Here's a deal that quietly has been discussed, hasn't come to fruition, but should: The Jaguars should trade a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Pro Bowl running back Shaun Alexander, a deal that makes sense for both sides. The Jaguars would get the insurance they need for Fred Taylor, as well a draw who is wildly popular in Alabama and would help boost attendance in Jacksonville, at a relatively modest cost. The Seahawks would get back a third-round pick in addition to salary-cap relief they need and want for a player who has vowed not to sign the tender that Seattle has given him. Makes great sense. Now it's up to both teams to make it happen. Problem is, the Jaguars -- not the Seahawks -- have balked at it. Right now, they're not willing to pay the Seahawks or Alexander."

KFFL made it sound like the Seahawks were the ones pushing this deal. Adam wrote that this has been quietly discussed, but by whom? The answer, I would venture, is by Alexander's agent, who has been given permission to seek trades and would obviously like to get something going.

I spoke with Adam tonight and he said Seattle and Jax have talked about such a deal. I do not think anything along those lines is being discussed currently, but that cannot be verified. In my view, any team would give up a third-round pick for Shaun Alexander, but not if he's a franchise player seeking a huge long-term deal. Those dynamics are part of any deal for Shaun and that's why nothing has happened. I still think there's a chance something could happen at some point, though, and if it's with Jacksonville then you heard it from Adam first.

  8. Thaks for that ADP, it makes much more sense now! I always thought Adam was a bit of a jackass personally, so I normally take anything he says with a pillar of salt, but this caught me by surprise. The full quote helps though, just Adam speculating on what he thinks the Hawks should do which means less than nothing, and a rumor that is unverified. GOOD!!

  9. Again the doubts about Alexander's worth show their ugly head.....to late for an I told ya so?

He's not a complete back and everyone but the Fantasy Boys and the Alexander hangers-on, seem to get that, hence the attempted trade before the draft, during the draft and now (imagine that)after the draft.

Seems to me there are a lot of knowledgable guys out there that agree with me.

Please send all hate mail to monkey. :D

  10. Don't care for this at all. I want SA in Seattle long term, don't care about the warts, the man is   franchise.

Also, the new OC for Jax coached or coached against Toefield, and apparently loves/loved him. Toe is not tested in the NFL everydown, but has the size and skills to carry IMO. And is currently the 3rd down back, so you know he can catch and block...

With what Vin? TOE-field being an every down back?

    Or SA being franchise?

Alba, toes, and feet. Toes and feet. Fat ankles. Toenails. And toes. ;-) Skin crawling yet?

    Or how bout Metatarsalfield.

  15. I've said it before and I'll say it again Vin, it's not that Jacksonville doesn't want to give up a pick. If they didn't have to pay the huge salary and signing bonus, they wouldn't take this deal, because they wouldn't have a chance, every team in the NFL would beat them to it. you can't forget that while we may not gain more than a pick (and some cap room) the team that gets shaun has to pay a ton of money. And no one wants a player with only one year left on his contract. That applies to any player, from Peyton Manning to Randy Moss to Ray Lewis to Shaun Alexander.

  18. A ton of money he's apparently not worth, to us or anyone else, that's the p[oint I'm trying to make....if he were the answer to any team rushing woes wouldn't he be worth whatever he was asking? If not then he's asking too much!

  19. Vin, I hear what you are saying, but I just don't think you are accurately guaging the effect of the salary cap on teams abilities to aquire players, they would otherwise normally love to aquire.
Remember that SA wasn't the only RB that found out just how tough this market is, Edgerrin had the exact same problem, no one it seemed, wanted him. What it really was, was the salary cap has teams strapped so tightly that no one could afford Edgerrin, same with Alexander. It's simply economics, it is nothing against the player as you assert.

  20. And not every team is willing to sacrifice everything for one player. The colts and falcons have done it with Manning and Vick, but that could seriously strap them down in the future. And let's not forget the effect of the CBA discussions on signing bonuses. I still say thagt Shaun will now retire as a Hawk. And that if the CBA gets worked out soon, he will sign a long term deal almost immediately after.

  21. From Jaguars.com

June 7)—Jack Del Rio denied reports the Jaguars are pursuing a trade for Seattle running back Shaun Alexander, and maintained the position that Fred Taylor's rehab from offseason knee surgery is on-schedule and without setback.

“No, we like the group we have,” Del Rio said when asked if he was interested in trading for Alexander or Buffalo running back Travis Henry. “At this point in the offseason, guys are looking for stories and throw that out there and see what sticks on the wall. We have nothing on the burner right now. We'll let you know if there's anything going on,” Del Rio said.

Of course that could all be coach speak, but I truly don't think this is happening.

  22. "A ton of money he's apparently not worth, to us or anyone else "

Not to ton it on Mr. Vin, but we think he's worth 6 Mil this year, unless we can get something better value wise.

"Of course that could all be coach speak, but I truly don't think this is happening. "

Agree, I don't know the cap figure in Jax, but could they afford him @ 6M? Thats a ton of coin for a "luxury" since they already have a bunch of backs on the team.
