The latest member of the Seahawks family to be interviewed by Mike Brown of Seahawks.com is none other than the King himself, Tim Ruskell.
Of course the subjet of the interview is the upcoming draft, and as expected, Ruskell was non-committal on who the Seahawks may select with their 23rd pick.
"We're going to go into the draft with an open mind and try to get the best player available," Ruskell said. "We feel we've got depth holes in terms of a guy could come in here and make the team at just about every position. So you want to keep an open mind no matter what round it is to say, 'Who is the best player here? Who can come in here and do something to win a job for this football team?'"

Although I thought that most of the interview was coach speak and I really learned nothing much from it, I did take away the fact that (like I was thinking) the draft isn't all that strong at the top but it is deep, especially at certain positions and it is very even through the first round a half to two rounds as far as talent is concerned. Natually there are some players that are rated higher than others, but this year the talent pool is much more leverlled out than in previous seasons, 10 through 40 is pretty much all the same kind of talent just depends on team needs and preferrences.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about there not being much substance to it, but here's what I took from it:
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if he's a master marketeer, or if he has an ego to rival Holmgrens, but Tim Ruskell certainly has been doing his part to put his NAME and FACE on this team.
I don't recall there ever being a President and/or GM of the team that has been this visible and accessible.
From the initial interviews, the "signing" press conferences, to the letters to the players and the season ticket holders, Tim Ruskell is definitly marking this as HIS territory.
I personally think it's a good thing, since there's nothing more motivating toward success than knowing it's your good name on the line if the sh*t blows up in your face!
I'm not sure how this sits with Holmy, who has been the "face" of the team until now, but I do think it's time there's a name and face to prove that the Seahawks front office is finally committed to building a quality team and winning games.
