Should we put too much stock in ESPN?

Well, we all know my opinion, just curious what others here at the 'Intelligent Hawk Site' think.

I just want to know if I'm being overly critical of the bullshit they feed us daily.

Alba, feel free to insert an appropriate pic if ya want.

  1. you know how I feel...as the main sports media out there, they are responsible to make sports a COMPETITIVE recreation...

its not competitive when all you hear about is the Red Yanx and Yankees...

another thing I cant stand is how they say Seattle teams need to earn respect, but when we do what we need to...they call us a fluke in such...

    example:
Seahawks become a super bowl threat...as soon as we stumble...all the negative things popped up...instead of focusing on how we could salvage the season, they focus on the drops, uninspired play...and nationally say the Seahawks should give up their playoff spot, even though Minnesota and StLouis got in, with worse records (we won the tie breaker over the Vikes)

funny how that never happens for any other team...

how about the injuries situation? for us 'injuries are not an excuse' but yet they use that to explain Carolina's problems...regardless of wanting to use excuses or not, if injuries hurt your team's gameplay, THEN IT IS AN EXCUSE...

    Sonics:

we make the playoffs, and while most sites are giving us credit for doing what seemed impossible for our team...they put up articles of how we are the weak team...i just saw an article today saying only the top two division winners should get credit...leaving us out, once again...

EARN RESPECT? what does it take? 4000000000 super bowl rings?

how about the refs...ESPN once again never brings up the refs, (neither does the other horrible football site, nfl.com itself)...we constantly get the most ridiculous screwjobs...and the only one talked about was the Redskins' pass interference call during the season...

they convince the nation that the unpopular teams, like Seattle, are either flukes are just plain horrible...

Danny Fortson said it best in a recent interview in an article:

'Danny Fortson was on a Dallas Mavericks team that made it to the playoffs last season.

But he said that experience does not come close to comparing with the Sonics winning the Northwest Division.

“I didn’t even play a millisecond in the playoffs in Dallas,” Fortson said. “I didn’t even get in to give Shawn Bradley a rest. So that should tell you what they thought of me. They sent me up here, just thinking that Seattle was a wasteland. They sent me to a pot of gold as far as I am concerned.”

Fortson said this season has been his best experience as a professional.

“Even though we haven’t even gotten to the playoffs yet, to clinch the division, that feels like an accomplishment,” Fortson said. “Considering where we came from, it just feels good. No matter what, they can’t take that away from us. No matter what happens from here on out, we have accomplished that.”'

notice he said: "THEY CANT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US"...I wonder who 'they' refers to?

im sick of the lack of respect our team receivers...fans of other teams see us as weak, and pushoverish...but thats because they dont have their own minds, and listen to ESPN...

notice how we were Super Bowl threats...then we had a breakdown with injuries and the Lambs...so ESPN makes us out to be a fluke...and of course, sure enough, other fans start jumping on our team...

I know what we think about our team matters most...but I cant help but get pissed about where the US is heading...im starting to hate Americans (dont jump on me for that)...theyre sheep to the news...naiive bastards...I rather be a human then an American (which to me are becoming zombies...as they cant think for themselves)

Seahawks are a playoff calibur team...the Sonics, like it or not has been consistently dominant, therefore, regardless of surprise, are a Championship THREAT...

bleh...thanks for this thread Vinny...that felt GREAT

  2. I think I just set a record for longest post ever...

    to end Fortson's miniview...

'When Fortson was introduced in Friday’s home finale, he was given the loudest cheer of all his teammates, despite a second half of the season that was trying.

“It is surprising,” Fortson said. “Shocking, considering what was written about me in the second half of the season. How can anyone like me?

“Hopefully, (fans) like the way I play, and hopefully they know that I genuinely care about these guys. Maybe they see that, I don’t know.”'

any Seattle fan should know what kind of reputation ESPN gave Fortson...

  3. RAH, RAH, RAH!

    Go get 'em, ayedeepee!

ESPN is East Coast, Major Market biased, period.

I was listening to ESPN radio while the final four was happening, and this dude, Eric something, was griping about the Huskies having a #1 seed. He said we can NEVER AGAIN say that they are West Coast biased. He said it SEVERAL times.

I almost punted my boom box. First of all, it wasn't ESPN that gave them the seed, it was the comittee. And second, ONE #1 SEED does not make up for the continued bias coming from ESPN, the most watched Eagles/Yankees whore.

  4. Actually I prefer being under the radar. Here in SC I sport Hawks or Mariners gear almost everyday, and invariably someone has something to say about it, "You must have a good sense of humor" or something like that. I think that shows I am a true fan, not a bandwagoneer. Anybody can buy a new Brady jersey and act like they were fans all along, but a true Pats fan has a 96 AFC East champs t-shirt... with paint on it usually.

I agree that lots of time the national media doesn't give our teams much coverage, or writes them off, but remember, ESPN and their cohorts picked the Seahawks a Super Bowl threat last year before the season started... just stirring the pot.

  5. Ugh, J-SC, last year was BAD for Seahawk Bandwagon fans. When they jump off, the forums get ugly. It caused me to write this bit and post it to the PI blog:

    http://12seahawksstreet.blogspot.com/2005/02/what-kind-of-fan-are-you.html

I'm starting to see what kind of fan YOU are, though. Way to stick it out, dude.

It's funny how many members of this blog are transplanted die-hard Seahawks fans looking for camraderie (sp?). We've got Contributors in NY, AZ, ND, MD, and you're knocking on the door from SC. Just a few are in Washington, and only a couple in the Seattle area.

It's like a haven for displaced fans.

BTW: The offer is still open, Josh, I you happen to be interested. But you'll need to jump in my profile and send me an email. If you aren't that's cool too. I know you think blogger sucks. We're glad to have you chime in just the way you are anyway.

  7. that what 'the media' has done to me...

my mind is going nuts just like a real person's would if he were surrounded by real Zombies...

basically, I feel kind of superior...I know my sports...

I was NEVER a bandwagon fan...its ironic that I like the 3 Seattle teams best in their respective sport...it has nothing to do with one being in Seattle, so I automatically liked the places in my heartothers...they all have genuine

Sonics were first...as I used to play NBA Jam TE back when i wa sa kid...I loved Kemp and Payton on that game...

2nd...the Mariners, I started liking them in a bandwagon-year...but for a different reason...as a kid, I collected baseball cards...and I NEVER saw a real baseball game on tv until 1995...I turned on the tv, and see my favorite baseball player (from my cards) batting...and he scored the winning run from first base...I was stunned and knew immediately I was going to be a baseball player

Seahawks were more of a team I started liking midway-to-late 90s...I was a fan of some their players, especially Shawn Springs...

    and btw...my little league credentials:
drafted 1st overall of the 200+ kids who tried out...led the worst team the previous year to the championship in my rookie year...batted 3rd for the All Star game...batted over 7 FREAKING HUNDRED!!!...and only struck out when the umpire was blind and called a horrible pitch a strike...

alot of things happened (moved to a place with no yard thanks to selfish mom...injuries...no family members would play with me), and my game has suffered...so thats why im busting my ass for football

  8. I promise thats the last time I post a life story in a thread : P

I just wanted to brag...nah...just wanted to add on to the US-wide Seahawk legion...I really came a long way in sports...busted my ass for everything I got

PS...I GOT A WEIGHTBENCH FINALLY...but im back to being poor again

  10. BTW, I hate to say it Vinny, but as much as you hate espn and John Clayton (I do too BTW) it seems he was right all along. Chad Brown is on his way out in ugly fashion.
The thing is, Clayton isn't going to put his reputation and job on the line by reporting something completely made up. Remember the New York Times guy that got nailed doing that? Clayton has been around too long to make that mistake. Someone was telling him what was going on with Brown and with K Rob. Looks like he was right about Brown, he'll rpobably be right about K Rob too.

  11. This is the thing about ESPN. Yes, it's east coast biased. But let's look at their viewership. If the Midwest or the West coast had the population that the East coast did, they would be biased toward that part of the country.

The biggest thing about ESPN is that they are correct 90% of the time. They do have problems giving teams from the west credit, but let's be real, the Hawks haven't won a playoff game in many years, and while I love the fact that they won the division last year, it wasn't the toughest division in the NFL. They definitely should give the Hawks a little more respect, but I think with the circumstances (viewership and hawks history) it's semi-understandable.

ESPN has more contacts than any other sports media. They break more stories than all the other sports media combined. Some of the reporters opinions aren't always in line with some of ours, but their information is almost always correct.

  12. Damn voice of reason. Why you gotta be all sane and stuff, Paulie? ;)

  13. I just had to post the following gaffe ESPN made a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if anyone else saw it.

They did a mock draft for the first round. I scroll through the draft and who's in slot #23? That's right, the Minnesota Vikings will select Carlos Rodgers from Auburn with the 23rd pick. They went through some analysis of why Minnesota needs a corner, failing to mention the acquisition of Fred Smoot anywhere (even if Minnesota were picking, I doubt they'd go corner when they already have Smoot and Winfield). Someone must have complained, because they eventually switched so that the 'Hawks were picking 23. Who did they pick there? That's right, Carlos Rodgers. They took out the Vikings analysis and included some 'Hawks "analysis" that was tantamount to saying that the 'Hawks are in need of a corner because that's who we have them selecting. Shoddy writing and a shoddy coverup of their mistake.

  14. Someone has to stand in front of the mob. The way it was going, I could see everyone advancing on Bristol with Pitchforks and Foam Fingers waving menacingly.

  15. I think this pic could be voted most appropriate so far! (although, I like ESPN and don't necessarily think they're F.O.S., but then again, I'm an Easterner, so it's no surprise I like espNY!

  16. Hey, I understand the East Coast/West Coast bias thing, but that's my bitch, a news network(though it's sports news) should be unbiased.

Which is why I also hate watching Nationally televised Hawks games, the bias in the commentating is maddening(MADDENing get it)

  17. BTW Vin, I can't take credit for the graphic with this post...some other "Clarence" must be watching over you. (sideways "Wonderful Life" reference)

BTW, ADP, I used to think "Clare" was a funny name for a guy too, until Vinny clued me in that it must be short for Clarence.
