Northwest Brown Out

As the sun sets on the Seahawks chapter, and possibly on the entire career of one of our most exciting players, I think it's time we all take a moment and reflect on what Chad Brown has brought to this organization in the years he played in Seattle.

Signing Sharper, Dyson, Pathon and Richards today was all good news, but it was tempered just a bit by losing one of the true inspirational leaders in the clubhouse, on the field, and in the league.

Chad Brown came to this organization during a period of a lot of promise, and while he never tasted a championships in Seattle, or even savored playoff victory, he brought attitude, class, and professionalism to a team in desperate search of an identity.

While healthy, #94 was a motor that never stopped running. If the quarterback dropped back to pass, #94 was fighting through blocks to get to him. If the quarterback handed off for a run up the middle, #94 was shedding blockers until he could grab the guy with the ball. And if the quarterback tried to dump a pass off to a tight end coming across the middle, #94 and his shoulderpads were there to remind that would be pass receiver what a bad idea it would be to try to do that again.

It is sad that the NFL has become a slave to a new master called the Salary Cap, but this master controls both the players and the organizations, so it is equally revered and despised at times by all.

In an ideal world, Chad Brown would have been able to go out as a Seahawk, and on top of his game, like Elway did. Or at least on his own terms, like Emmett did. Or even being carried off the field for the last time, like a true warrior that he was, like Theisman did.

But instead, he needs to suffer the indignation of being cut, felled not at the hand of the opposition, not by being bested within the field of play, but taken out at the knees, by "friendly fire" if you will, cut by the dullest of blades, a casualty of the salary cap.

So, as we're tipping our mugs and glasses, toasting the likes of Sharper, Dyson, and Pathon, let's also take a moment to tip our hats to a champion without a championship, a true professional, and a future resident of Canton, Ohio, whose legs may not have brought him to the finish line in Seattle, because they were weakened for carrying the Seahawks solely on his back for so long.

So Mr. Brown. We say Good-bye. And thank you. And wish you the best of luck as you turn the next page in the book of your life.

  1. Chad, you were by far, the best defender the Seahawks ever had. It was watching you was what made me choose the hawks as a team, and I bid you a fond farewell. I wish you luck, and I hope we see you back someday. #94 means only one thing to me.

  3. of course, I appreciate everything he did...but business is business...ever since Griffey left Seattle, ive gotten used to players like him, Brown, and Martinez...

its sad to see them go...but, unlike Griffey's departure, im more understanding now then I was when Griffey left...so ive learned to cope with it...

ever since i switched to my 'career mode' ive ignored my friends, and went in my own direction, as I knew that they wouldnt be in a huge role with my future...thats how I look at this situation...the guys we got in return of Chad Brown's release are more important in the future...and like my friends, I leave Chad Brown behind...its survival of the fittest, and the weak will be left behind

not to say Brown is weak...its just hes vulnerable more to injuries then ever, he costed too much, and his age was a factor, and comparing him to the 3 we just got...hes the weak...and unfortunately we have to leave him behind

I like how Ruskell plays this business...dont get attached to anyone...

Brown was great with us, did a lot for us, and stuck by us...something I never forget...he truly showed what 'playing with heart' means...he tried his best, and I appreciate the effort...

i hate to say it...but hes past tense now...a memory...and i try to block out my memories as best i can...

good luck to Chad Brown, and please dont kill us if you sign with a team we play this year

  4. I have the greatest respect and admiration for you, Chad, for one overwhelming reason: You play the game the way it's supposed to be played.

You are a standout, not because of raw talent (which you have), not because of a keen understanding of the game (which you have), but because in an age where money-motivated, self-centered players dominate the headlines, I have always sensed your love, intensity, and passion for the game.

For this my hat is off to you. You are a true relic of what football, real football, is all about.

    Thank you, Chad Brown.

and I apologize if anyone feels I put Brown down a bit in my previous post...I do appreciate what he has done...but im moving on...knowing this was coming softened the blow

  9. well we knew this would come, but here are some teams who already shown interest...

Milwaukee Journal said the Packers immediately contacted Brown's agent

Broncos, Steelers, and BENGALS have already shown interest...

ill be interested in which team he goes to...I would prefer Broncos or Steelers of those 4...Packers beat us in the playoffs, and the Bengals were annoying with Sharper...so I have annomosity towards them (you like that school word...annomosity)

  10. ADP, I think your right on about Green Bay, talk up here in Viking vs. Packer land is that Green Bay is HOT after CB. Apparently he will get a better deal than what we were able to offer him. Too bad in a way, I will miss the guy and it looks like the door is really and truly shut on him now. Sad, but like all the disloyal athletes are so quick to tell the fans, "this is a business".

  11. No door is shut Monkey, we simply have to adjust our draft strategy...

"NFL | Brown Wants to Continue Playing - from www.KFFL.com
    Fri, 22 Apr 2005 07:29:28 -0700

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports free agent LB Chad Brown (Seahawks) made it clear after he was released from the Seattle Seahawks that he would like to continue his career in the NFL. His agent, Peter Schaffer, said Brown will keep an eye out during the NFL Draft to see where his brother, Vann Brown (DE, Northwestern Oklahoma State), winds up because he would be interested in playing with him."

So we simply draft Vann late...
