Notes from our Insider

Here's a post from "Mary Smith" (not pictured), our source on the Seattle Times Fan Forum for insider information about the Seahawks.

The team is approaching the Shaun situation as if he will be our running back next season. There is no real interest in getting a long term deal signed, but they do want him in training camp. If all else fails, a promise could potentially be made to refrain from using the FT on him next season. The reasoning behind this is that his chance of injury rises significantly if he misses training camp, if he doesn't have to worry about the FT he can approach the season as another contract year with all of the possible monetary benefits, and then we go out and find someone else at years end.

Koren's leash is getting shorter. The report in PFW was correct, but it is the opinion of some that he has already screwed up by missing some workouts and meetings.

Chad isn't garnering as much interest as he would like people to think. Even with all of the teams that he is supposedly visiting, no one is offering anything more than the league minimum except the Seahawks.

*Again - take all of this with a grain of salt. Just my thoughts and observations.

Mary, aka Linc, correctly called the Womack and Mili signings, a good day or two before the news broke anywhere else, so she's proved herself to be reliable. Not everything she posts is straight from the FO, some is her own personal viewpoint, but fact or opinions, she's definitely someone worth paying attention to!

  1. I've been thinking the same about the potential holdout situation with Shaun - That not only is it bad for the team, buit it's bad for him. I remember postin a thread about that a few weeks back. I hope he's giving camp serious consideration in spite of the F-tag.

About Koren - I think his leash is 33 days long... 'til June 1!

  2. I posted something similar to the PI site the other day, about Shaun signing the tender in exchange for a gentlemen's agreement not to tag him next season, and they laughed me off.

I still think it's the best way to go, and even if it's not in writing, not everyone in business is a bastard who will go against their word.

Shaun's got more to lose by sitting out, in terms of paycheck, injury risk, and additional damage to his reputation.

I used to think we needed to keep Koren, but with 10 other WRs on the roster, he's certainly more expendable. That being said, no reason not to let him have a breakout contract year with US rather than someone else, unless there's beaucoup bucks to be saved by cutting him. And if he flames out again, sit his ass on the bench for the rest of the season, and let Urban, Pathon, et al carry the load.

It may come down to a pride thing with Chad rather than money. Either he'll play for someone else for league minimum, just to prove a point, or retire. If there's a chance to have him back on this team though, no matter what he's quoted as saying, I'd welcome him back.

  3. The only problem with the expendable tag is tha fact that he's probably also the most talented. So if he get's it together he's got most of those other guys beat.

  4. I agree, Vinny (something you don't hear too often on the ST site) which is why I think we should ride his contract year for all it's worth.

The good news is though that this season, if he decides to take a mental vacation, or worse gets suspended again by the team or the league, we've got way more qualified backups waiting to take his place.

Another no lose situation for the Seahawks. Keep him, if he does well in his contract year, we do well. If he goes bust again, sit him, which means he won't be worth squat as a free agent anyway.
