With the 23rd, er, 26th Pick the Seattle Seahawks Take: CHRIS SPENCER

The Seahawks moved down in the first round via a trade with the Raiders in which the two teams swapped first round picks (giving Seattle the 26th pick) and Oakland kicked in a fourth round pick, number 105 overall.

The 'Hawks have used the 26th pick to draft Chris Spencer, a 6'3" 310 lb center out of Ole Miss.

Scouts Inc. has Spencer graded out at an 85 out of 100, and predicts that he will be a solid starter in the NFL. They've stated that they had fully expected LB or DE help for Seattle in the first round, but that this isn't a bad pick. The main attraction is that Spencer can play either center or guard, and we have one of each that is aging and on the decline, and will soon need replacement. For what it's worth, Mel Kiper would have prefered we draft a WR (despite the fact that we've signed two already), but implied the pick was still decent. One of the recurring "pro's" for Spencer is that he is highly coachable.

The Clarion Ledger also published an article detailing some of his personal history as well as previewing the draft for him.

  1. any thoughts Check?

im a little disappointed that they didnt get Roth while he was there, but Spencer is certainly a great player, with Pro Bowl potential

  2. Crap pick, we could have gotten him in the third round, HUGE reach! Spencer has played only one stinkin' season of college ball and he won't even play next year. What a waste, no wonder Ruskell likes to load up on third and fourth round picks his first round picks suck.

  3. It seems like all the people Seattle really wanted were already taken so they may have reached a little bit. This guy is a much better athlete than Tobeck so I think if he can work on his technique during training camp etc. he will be in the starting line up by mid season.

  4. This is what NFL.com had to say about the selection:

    Pat Kirwan's Analysis
I love this pick. When I went to Mississippi earlier this month and spent two days with him because one of the most respected NFL line coaches told me he's the best center to come out in 10 years. This is a 10 to 12-year starter who will go to several Pro Bowls. He can handle a DT with his strength, and is athletic enough to go against a linebacker in open space and decleat him. He can also pull, like Kevin Mawae, which changes everything for the blocking scheme. I'm not surprised he is a first-round pick.

  5. He'll be solid but not a pro bowler. Doesn't have the aggresion to punish the defender. His versatility makes him more valuable. No one cares about centers and guards, but he will be repected if not feared. No Walter Jones.
