Draft Day Fallout: Shaun Was Shopped

Jay Glazier of FoxSports.com reports the following:

"Several NFL executives told FOXSports.com they received calls on Friday from the Seahawks, who were trying to trade RB Shaun Alexander. The price tag for the Pro Bowl RB was a first-round draft pick, with the team calling in the middle of the first round.

"Alexander and any trade value that Colts RB Edgerrin James may have had were greatly diminished by the financial ramifications of adding either to a team's roster."

I know that this is not earth shaking to all of you that follow this site, but it does add to the baggage of the situation.

Rusky, sign this guy in June. Pretty please!?!

  1. Hey! I can comment again!!!

No surprise. Ruskell and company are on record as trying to "trade up" during the first round, but not getting anyone to move. It's not that big of a leap to figure out who or what they were dangling as bait for that possible trade.

I mean people aren't going to give up a high first round choice for a couple of 4th round selections, which is all we had otherwise to offer.

  2. That being said, I still don't think we're at the point of irreconsilable differences.

The FO couldn't have shopped him without his consent to teams he'd be willing to go to, because technically without him signing his tender we have no right to trade him, I believe.

It's all about who will blink first.

Will Shaun realize this years options are all but dried up and consent to play for the tender?

Will Ruskell realize that an extended holdout and disgruntled feature back will be a cancer to this team and just summarily release him?

Will the two sides be able to work out a reasonable short term deal (2-3 years) using next years cap room and put this ugly period behind them?

Only the shadow knows for sure!

  3. NO! don't sign him in June!

We have to wait til July to talk to him. I don't want to lose picks like the Broncos!!

    :)

  4. You're right, Pavillion, we can't sign him until July 15th, I believe, otherwise we'd lose the use of the Franny tag for the length of his contract. I don't believe we'd lose picks though.

We can, however, help him work out a trade to another team before them, at which case we get our $6M in cap space back as well as the use of the Franny tag.

  5. Yep, you got me there.

Dang, that could be a long few weeks if FA pass rushers are disappearing.

  7. This is from Mary Smith, our Seahawks Insider who has shown up once again on the Seattle Times fan forum....

Trades were attempted before the draft to get an established running back from another team, plus a pick, for Shaun. However, they feel through, and the Seahawks recognized that any running back that wasn't gone by the time 23 rolled around wasn't going to be able to come in and start. We will have to work with Shaun - and trust me, Mo Morris is more of a threat to Shaun's starting position that some random guy we picked up in the second or third round.

Trust me - the draft will pay off well for the Seahawks. I remember two years ago, I was watching the draft with some family and was so excited when Jimmy Kennedy was available at our pick. I knew that some of the scouts had him ranked high and thought they would jump at the chance to get him. When the name Marcus Trufant was read, I was really confused. In my mind, corners are the ones you get in FA and lineman are the ones you draft. But what is the story now? Marcus Trufant, despite some struggles last year,w ill be an elite corner in this league and a foundation for the Seahawks. Jimmy Kennedy has barely started for the Rams and has had lots of injuries.

Lesson? There is a staff of guys at the Seahawks that do absolutely nothing but look at players all week. Their decision was to attempt to go up and get a good DE, or wait and get a good OL. That is what happened - and even though many would call it naive, I trust the staff. What I know about the players is what I have read. From guys like Mel Kiper and other random 'experts' but I have never met the players, I have never watched them work-out, and I have never witnessed their intensity during a game. I trust the team when they say they took what we needed and the best players available. Plus, if I had to, I could find at least one expert that
agreed with at least one of our picks.

Drafts are about waiting and seeing. Be patient. Plus, with Marcus Tubbs healthy - it will be like having a number one DE out there.

  8. I was thinking that about Tubbs- I think this is 'his year', or our year, for that matter. It will be like we drafted him all over again.

  9. Shaun shopped......A show of hands of those that didn't see that coming.

  10. SHO - great info. I think it's relavent enough to keep us updated on his progress at EWU.

It might break moral laws and spawn a philosophical debate about when life as a Seahawk truly begins, but maybe you can adopt the younger Trufant "in vitro"!
