I was parousing the official web site of our favorite football team this evening and, just for a lark, checked out the depth chart. I was pleasantly surprised to see the name of our most recent acquisition, Jamie Sharper. Surprised, just because we haven't actually signed him on yet, both sides have merely come to an agreement. But this is all beside the point. What I was interested in what the position he would play!
Earlier this week, under the topic "Mysterious Linebacker Juggling", we were wondering if the depth chart is up to date. Well, it now appears that it is. D.D. Lewis HAS taken over the starting MLB position, with Niko Koutouvides in relief. Now Sharper starts on the Strong side OLB, with Tracy White, and then Kevin Bentley providing backup. Chad Brown still starts on the weak side, with Bates and Kacyvenski filling in.
Bottom Line: Brown, Lewis and Shaper are our starting linebackers. This, of course could change very soon, but it at least lets us know how the coaches feel about the players we have right now.
Another interesting thing on the chart: Pork Chop is back to playing RT again since Chris Gray (UGH!) has been re-signed. Oh, and Gray is the starting RG. (Double UGH!). So dreams of Locklear and Hunter battling it our for the right tackle spot, and Womack going back to his natural position at right guard appear to be over. We're back to the same weak right side that gave us problems last year.
Also of note: Bobby Taylor is listed as 3rd string RCB behind Jordan Babineaux. Lifetime Waterboy Isaiah Kacyvenski back to being listed as 3rd string LOLB. Jerehme "Don't Call Me Keith" Urban is back to being 4th string behind Jackson.
Another thing about the depth chart that we haven't seen in awhile: NO INJURIES. Wahoo!
Check out the depth chart for yourself. Wouldn't you rather have Niko starting at MLB? And doesn't it make sense to let Gray be a backup RG, Womack to start, and Locklear or Hunter at RT?
Maybe things will change between now and preseason, but it sure seems like Mike Holmgren has a mind of his own and he doesn't listen to a word I say. ;)
See! This is EXACTLY the kind of post that people have been complaining about - - cluttering up the front page with factual on-topic information about the Seahawks -- and no links to sub-blogs or other resources!!!
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the fact that your graphic is appropriately sized, and actually seems to feature a football player.
Actually, I wouldn't put too much stock in a depth chart at the end of April, but is sure is nice to see NO INJURIES.
We still have the draft and training camp, where I'm sure the names and positions will be juggled more than a few times before opening day.
Watch your step Mr. Blue...or no more pickles for you!! :-)
Fun Fact: At work, if someone is harrassing our receptionist, or if there's a problem at the front entrance, she pages "Mr. Blue" and a bunch of us come running to her defense.
ReplyDeleteGood thing she's never had to do it in the 10 years I've been there...my office is on the 4th floor!
Alba, that's why I qualified the post with, "This, of course could change very soon, but it at least lets us know how the coaches feel about the players we have right now."
ReplyDeleteIt'll probably change with the draft next weekend!
If someone paged 'Mr. Blue' in my office in those circumstances, that would be like the fox guarding the hen house. ;)
Shouldn't you be doing your taxes, al?
Good point, SHO.
ReplyDeleteDid it surprise any of you, like it did me, that B. Taylor is listed behind Babineaux?
I really think Taylor will be released June 1.
I just don't think that any of that is right. Seahawks.com is the only place that is talking about Lewis at MLB at all, not to mention starting ahead of Niko. IF Sharper isn't inside, (which his agent said he would be) then Niko will most certainly be the starting mike backer. If Chad Brown is cut (and I still think he will be along with a few others) then Lewis will start outside. IF brown is still here (I hope) then Lewis will still play outside alternating with Brown depending on the situation and to keep our 35 yr old injury prone LB healthy. Nothing else makes any sense at all. The projections listed at .com are stupid, and I certainly hope they are not right. Lewis should be used on the outside where his speed is a factor and where he can be used to keep Brown fresh. Brown will be more of a pass rush specialist than he has been in years past, and either Sharper will get what he wants, (seems likely) and play inside, or Niko will start inside, not Lewis. I would bet any amount of money on it.
ReplyDeleteWow, monkey. How do you figure there is a more authoritative source than Seahawks.com?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why everyone (maybe not everyone, but several here) is so high on Niko. Sure, he played well as a rookie, but he's just a rich man's version of Kaz. He knows what to do, is willing to do it, but doesn't have the athleticism to make all of the plays. That would be my explanation for why Lewis was ahead of him (athleticism). Don't get me wrong. I like Niko. I think he would make a great backup/OK starter. Good value for where he was picked. But, I just don't see him being that great of a player in the NFL. I'm not saying Lewis would be outstanding either, I'm just saying that Niko is not THE answer at MLB (IMHO).
ReplyDeleteRack him!
ReplyDelete"Shouldn't you be doing your taxes, al? "
ReplyDeleteOne word: EXTENSION!!!
I'm free and clear until August 15th boys!!!
I'm with Monkey, Sounds like pure speculation on S.com's part. Why would we start an OLB at MLB when we've got a great, experienced MLB in Sharper? Doesn't make any sense to me. You need experience at that position, and D.D. has NO experience at MLB, Sharper does.
ReplyDeleteI also doubt the Coaches and staff have anything to do with the Seahawks.com site, seems to me as slow as they are at getting info, they're in the same boat as we are, waiting and watching for an official word from some other source.
ReplyDeleteNotice we have never gotten any breaking news from them.
