Bobby Taylor Retiring?

According to KFFL.com Seahawks Bobby Taylor Attending Executive Education Program

Seattle Seahawks CB Bobby Taylor is one of 36 NFL players who will be attending an executive education program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, from April 6-8. The program is part of an ongoing NFL-NFLPA initiative to assist players in preparing for their post-playing careers.

It's hard to read this any way other than that Taylor may be planning on retiring. Interesting since we are still pursuing a couple of free agents and are short of cash.
Although I am not positive, (because I have heard several conflicting opinions), I believe that if we were to release him after the June deadline, we could save nearly 3 million dollars.
Again I may be wrong about that because I also heard that we would save almost nothing this year 750,000 or something like that, but then would save over 2 mil next year.
If any of you can solve this please let me know.

In any case, I find it interesting that Taylor is attending this program. I think that he sees the writing on the wall, and that he knows his injuries aren't healing. It's just speculation granted, but it seems logical.

  1. Interesting take on that information, but I'd have to see the list of the others attending the course before assuming it's an early retirement seminar.

I think Bobby Taylor can still help our defense, by helping our younger guys mature and giving them a "name" to look up to.

Keeping him for $750K this year is like getting him for league minimum, which if he can play, would be a steal.

However, if we can truly save $2M on next year's cap number by releasing him before June 1, I'm sure Ruskell is considering it.

  2. I really wish I had confirmation on the numbers, it's a bit frustrating to hear two different things about the same topic but oh well.
I have always liked Taylor as a player, I was darn happy when the Hawks signed him last year, it's amazing how often we sign a guy just to see him get hurt.

I agree alba, in fact I think that if he's healthy he's MUCH better than Herndon as a starter. People forget, he's two years removed from being a probowler. He was a stud just two years ago. If he's healthy I think he can be and should be able to at least be our nickle guy, if not the starter.

  3. It's not a sign of anything, lots of NFLers are taking this class. It's a suggested class by the league, so that players learn to manage their money and don't go broke like Najeh Davenport reportedly has.

  4. You may be right Paulie but I love controversy, hence my take, we'll just have to see how things work out.

  5. "He signed a 4 year deal last year for $11.8 mill with a $3 mill SB so I believe from googling. If he's cut now this leaves us eating $2.25 mill or so in accelerated bonus money and we save $2.2 mil of salary net cap expense 50 k. If he's cut in June we eat $1.5 mil accelerated bonus and save $2.2 mil salary. As far as I can see we gain only $700 k from cutting him this year but $2.95 mill the following season." This from one person.

"I don't know about that Jazz, I think that if they cut him after June 1, it actually winds up saving a couple $mil ... he's got a 4 year deal with a $3mil SB, and a salary this year of about $2mil and $2.8mil next year. So I definitely think he's got a target on his chest when it comes to possible cap moves.."

    This from another.
