In this morning's PI, Clare Farnsworth reports Simmons will be cut, confirming the earlier report on ESPN.com from John "I was Alf's dad on TV" Clayton.
He will be missed. Heck, he was injured so much (missing 27 games the last three seasons), we already missed him.
Me not do math good. Anybody know where this will put us, cap-wise?
OK now we have a new dilema, who takes our fastest and second most experienced LBs place?
ReplyDeleteD.D. Lewis?
Tracy White?
A FA? (Who?)
A Draft Pick? (Who?)
Blue it says in teh article that they'll save $750,000 by releasing him. I just hope this is the right move.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya, Vinny.
ReplyDeleteIt sound like he wasn't bringing a very good attitude to the table. I bet that has a lot to do with it, because Chad is in similar circumstances, but you don't hear a peep.
Ummm. I'm all for getting the cap number down, but honestly, $750,000 is hardly enough saved to release a guy with Simmons' speed and talent. Honestly this move completely baffles me, if they were going to cut an oft injured overpriced linebacker, why wasn't it Chad Brown? I guess this means we'll be taking a LB first round in the draft now, because the Free agent LBer choices are no less risky health wise than Simmons, and certainly no less expensive.
ReplyDeleteMaybe like bluefoot said, this move has more to do with attitude than it does the salary cap, because that's the only way this move makes any sense to me.
NOw we are still left with innexperience at LB as well as a guy who is always hurt and is overpaid and aging, I don't get it at all.
If I understand the cap penaty rule correctly, the Seahawks are actually saving more cap room this year than $750k.
ReplyDeleteThe article said:
But the club will save only $750,000 by releasing him because of the $4.5 million acceleration of the remaining proration of Simmons' signing bonus. It is true that the $4.5 mil in bonus money is now 'accelerated', or paid up front out of Paul Allen's deep pockets, but that does not mean that it applies this year to the cap penalty.
For example, if his contract states that $1.5 million will be paid in bonus money for the next three years (totaling $4.5 mil) the dollar amounts will be applied to the cap penalty IN THOSE THREE YEARS, even if he is cut and the money is paid up front.
That's how I understand it. I could be wrong, but id does give us a little more cap room this year, even if we are paying the same total out.
The reason this is the rule is that it protects the team. Could you imagine the cap hit this year if Wistrom got a career ending injury and had to be let go? All of his bonus money that is spread out into the following years would suddenly have to be put against this year's cap. We'd be toast.
It's still robbing Peter to pay Paul, but it does give us a little wiggle room.
OK, then in that case I'm a little more okay with the move. Hell let's cut Brown too while we're at it and really save some damn money. These two guys can easily be replaced by anyone who actuall plays a whole season even if they are not as talented. I can't stand spending tons of money year after year on guys who are in the training room more often then on the field.
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like our draft is starting to shape up a little, looks like we'll be going LBer with our first pick or two.
BTW I am getting a little tired of hearing Niko get criticized as though he were the biggest problem on this team. He only started towards the end of the season so we really don't have a very good picture yet of just how good he can be, however, what I saw of him, he looked great for the most part. Sure he made some mistakes at times looked a little lost, but he also made several HUGE plays and for the most part didn't look like the rookie he was. I just don't get the talk about needing a MLB so badly, in my opinion what we need is a great pass rusher up front and a couple of outside LBers who can stay healthy. Niko is fine, isn't really costing us much and should be given at least one full season before we jump up and down demanding to pull the plug on him, geez, we don't even know what he really can do yet, let's have a little patience for cryin in the mud.
I hate say this, but I was wrong about the bonus money acceletation.
ReplyDeleteI checked my facts, and I was thinking of a situation where if he was cut after June 1, the balance of the cap hit could be amortized into next season. I was wrong.
In actuality, we just added $3 mil to our cap problems this year, money that would have been prorated over the balance of Simmons' contract.
Phhhht!!! >:P
OK, then why did we cut Simmons? To save a lousy $750,000? There has got to be more to it than just that, wouldn't you think?
ReplyDeleteWe must be saving money somewhere by cutting him, otherwise the move doesn't make any sense. Hey, I'm all of r cutting him if it helps the cap situation, but just cutting him for nothing doesn't seem smart to me. I'd still like ot cut Brown too, or at least restructure his contract big time.
Steel blue, you may be right, that may be the real reson for this move. It has to be something like that, otherwise it makes no sense, because we're not really saving any money.
ReplyDeleteMonkey, the only thing I can come up with as far as the reasoning behind Simmon's release is his lack of dedication to teh team and his inconsistant play.
ReplyDeleteI hope however that they don't replace him with a rookie, as I've stated several times, what's hurt us most is the play of our younger players, they can't read and react as fast as a quality Vet, so I'd rather see Anthony's replacement come out of FA.
And on the Niko subject, it's funny that you mention him, I was watching the tape of teh game against SD last year and man that guy looked nasty! The hits he was putting on people and the way he was flying around the field, I honestly think he'll get a solid look at the MLB spot. We may not need a high dollar fix at that possition, especially if we can get a quality replacement for Simmons.
No doubt! I love Niko. Other than a healthy Brown and an unofficially evicted Simmons he is our best linebacker.
ReplyDeleteok, after all the good moves made, we were bound to hit a bad one...
ReplyDeleteChad Brown should of been the one axed, as we'd get more money from it...plus, Brown's injuries occur with his leg, which is far worse for a LB then a shoulder (which is easily fixable through surgery)
if I were to pick which player would replace him, it would be Tracy White...
I got a headache, this almost confirms that Brown is staying, because if he left too, we'll have horrible LB starters
they must be REALLY eyeing someone in free agency for them to cut a guy at a position we need most
Didn't any of you watch the games Brown 'did' play in?
ReplyDeleteThe guy's teh best pass rusher on the team and the heart of the defense when he's out there, he's the defensive leader.
Two bad (unlucky) seasons and you brand the guy washed up and a liability. I'd like to say here and now that I predict he'll prove all the neigh sayers wrong.
I also predict that Simmons still winds up here.
you miss my point...Brown's injur with his leg are nagging for a LB, no matter how much the doctors can do...Brown still is a good player, BUT...he is costing a huge sum of money against the cap...he simply isn't worth that price, even at full strength...and the fact that he is a risk now, makes all the more stupid...thats why I want him cut or get a restructured contract...
ReplyDeleteAnthony Simmons leaving isn't giving us a lot of money to work with, so I don't get this move unless they have a plan B
Vinny: what makes you think Anthony Simmons will wind up back in Seattle (don't play with my emotions man, lol)
nevermind Vinny...I just saw your 'simmons might wind up back here' explanation in the other thread...
ReplyDeleteI thought there was a greater reason behind it then just the normal 'noone wants him, we can't find anyone' thing
they need to take a risk...Trotter and Godfrey had very good seasons when we decided to not pursue them
Without Ms. Whit's hands on the purse strings it may be time for some risk taking. :)
ReplyDeleteADP, I watched the Hawks vs Rams playoff game last night and the one player that really stood out was Brwn, he was everywhere and in on every nearly every play and he had just come off of getting his leg repaired. But he looked like a man possessed in that game so I think the moneys worth the man. We just need to figure out how to keep him healthy.
ReplyDeleteHe's just had a few bad luck seasons.
From '93-'02 he'd only missed 9 games.
he missed half of '02 and then only missed 2 games in '03 and then had the break this season.
But that doesn't mean we can't get a complete season out of him this year. And why piss off the best pass rusher we have.
And ADP, I believe that it's been established that Simmons is gone more due to his poor team play and his problems with the coaches, more than his missed games.
ReplyDeleteAnd Brown should stay because a broken bone heals well and shouldn't slow him up, did you see the way he played the last three games of the season? He looked like he was never hurt.
