Seahawks - Dolphins Talk on Surtain

Yesterday the Seahawks were in discussion with Miami about a possible trade for three time pro bowl CB Patrick Sutain. They reportedly want a 2nd round pick. Does it sound like a good deal? You can get good DE/LB in the 2nd round this year. On the other hand, Surtain has more INT's than any other CB the last three seasons. He seems to be a very reliable player.

  1. A second round pick for a proven established star shutdown corner? HELL YA! Surtain is among the leagues best corners, is far better than anyone we currently have and is better than Lucas as well. This would be a BIG upgrade, BIG!

  2. There is no one player available in the draft who could present more value to us with our second round pick than Surtain would give us. This is a no brainer, he's easily worth a second round pick, easily!

  3. My only qualm is a this:

Should we go for a very good player for a couple of years (Surtain), or a good player (2nd round pick, with Ruskell's eye for talent) for an indefinite amount of years? I honestly could go either way.

If it were up to me, I'd probably do it. Miami's letting him go because they are over the cap and want something in return, instead of release.

How about Simmons instead of a pick?

  4. A very good question Bluefoot, very good. Ruskell does seem to have an eye for talent, but remember, it is probably Ruskell who is behind this potential move, he's probably the one who initiated the talks in the first place. I have been a fan of Surtain for a while now, I think he's one of the most underrateed corners in the game today, if it were up to me, I would be all over this deal.

  5. The only thing that worries me is $$$. How much will it cost us? Will he restructure to make next years hit minimal? If so, sign him up.

  6. I'm sure that he would have to somehow restructure his deal, remembering of course that the reason he asked for a trade is because he is in the last year of his deal and didn't think the Dolphins would pay him what he wants.
The nice thing is that he's only 28 yrs old and so a backloaded contract could possibly be the answer. I must reemphasize, HE IS WORTH IT! Three straight pro bowls, and over the last three years has more picks than anyone in the NFL. He's young aggressive smart fast, he can play up or back depending on the scheme, he would be the perfect veteran guy to go along with the future pro bowler Trufant.

  10. lol yeh, I had to think about it for about 2 minutes before I posted...

there is one thing bad about hoping for Surtain...the Colts...The Edge wouldn't mind going to Miami, and the Colts need anyone on defense they can get...if you haven't heard any Edge-to-Miami whispers yet, wake up...they're everywhere...and I see dead people...

sorry, it just sounded scary when I typed it

  13. True Shonuff, I can't really argue with that. I just think Surtain is the real deal. I would agree however that there is no way you sign a cornerback at the cost of Hutch, that would be immensly stupid.

At ESPN John Clayton reported that as of today the Hawks are 6 million under the cap. Who knows, maybe they can structure a contract in such a way that they can still resign Hutch next year, isn't the cap amount set to go up next year too? I thought it was.

  14. haha damn monkey...im gonna get hiccups

as for Hutch, it depends who else becomes free agents next year...we could some of them go...Surtain wants a big deal with the team he goes to (or stays with)...thats an interesting thought though (about Hutch)...

I still doubt Chad Brown will be playing for us for two years...if he gets injured again this year...cut him, n that should free up a substantial amount of cap

  15. Get Surtain!

NO MORE ROOKIE STARTERS ON DEFENSE!

That's what hurt us the most was rookie mistakes. Rookie mistakes by first and second year players. And to throw a rookie into the DB mix would be suicide. Especially with the struggles taht our secondary had last season. Even our golden goose Boulware had some bad games, the playoff loss to the Rams for example, he got burned all day long in that game.

So to reitterate,PLEASE, NO MORE ROOKIE STARTERS!
