I told you guys this was going to happen.
Scout.com's Lane Adkins has confirmed that Seattle QB Trent Dilfer has been traded to the Cleveland Browns. Details are unconfirmed at this time, but the likely scenario has the Seahawks receieving a mid-round draft pick in exchange.
I'll try to find out more, though I'm sure we'll hear all about it tommorow.
According to the Trib, "The deal will not become official until Monday. The fourth-round choice is the one Cleveland recently acquired from Denver in exchange for defensive tackle Gerrard Warren."
The Browns and Seahawks agreed Saturday on a trade that will send Dilfer to Cleveland for what now stands as the 25th choice in the fourth round of the draft. (The pick’s position could change once the NFL issues compensatory choices.)
More cap money. And really, what are we losing?
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I feel Vinny, if we get a pick that won't hurt any either.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think that any of the news so far has been that bad.
ReplyDeleteThe loss of Lucas was tough but he still is not an elite DB, he made a lot of mistakes in the loss to the Rams at the end of the season. And I think we can do better with someone like Surtain, or a badass CB in the Draft.
And on Simmons, I think keeping Brown and letting Anthony go was the right call, Simmons apparently had some issues with the coaches, and we don't need that in our lockerroom. And Brown is a true team player, even though he was just back from breaking his leg, he was the best defender on the team the last games of the season, he was all over Vick, and Bulger.
Okeafor is also a pass rushing monster, we just need to get our best players on the field at the same time. And the injury prone comments about Brown aren't entirely accurate.(I've posted the stats on that subject on another thrad.)
I'll give you this Vinny, Browns injuries were legitimate injuries, ie. broken bones, not some lame hamstring, or groin injuries. They were also injuries that all the training and preperation in the world couldn't have helped him avoid. The injuries to Brown were more like accidents than lack of preperation. Also, Brown has been a classy guy unlike SImmons. From that perspective Vinny, I'll agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI have to say Vinny, im starting to lean towards this Anthony Simmons cut (like I have a choice...), as I didn't realize he had THAT bad of an attitude problem...every newspaper/rumor place said he got released for that reason, along with the injuries
ReplyDeleteas for Dilfer...im looking for info...I was hoping for something with Andra Davis who has potential and fits the OLB...along with Hartwell/Bell in the middle...not too shabby...but thats alright, I realize they don't have much else
QUESTION: does anyone know how much we save from letting him go?
hey look at this from rotoworld...
ReplyDelete"Cardinals released Larry Ned after he was arrested in a Arizona airport.
He stole a laptop from a security checkpoint. That's a new one. Ned was claimed off waivers only two days ago, but his NFL career could be on permanent hold."
thats funny
I'm trying to find anything I can ADP, apparently I'm too far ahead of the curve though, no one else is reprting this as of yet. I can't seem to find any other news than what I posted from Seahawks.net.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep looking though, I want to find out not only what we got but like you ADP, how much we saved which may be the most important thing.
The funnier part of that Ned story is that apparently he stole the Dell lap top from a guy waiting to get checked through at the airport, then he ran and hid in the bathroom, where the cops eventually found him. I think he was hiding in a stall. Maybe Latrell Sprewell's comments about needing to feed his family aren't so absurd. Ned had just signed a new deal but apparently couldn't afford a new Dell laptop.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if when the cops nailed he said, "but dude, it's a Dell."
ReplyDeletelol...
ReplyDeleteas for Dilfer...ESPNnews has 'Breaking News: Dilfer Traded To Browns' on the bottom righthand corner...and its just staying there...not going on and off, or changing...its just staying there
the odd part is...he is a backup player, and hes on the Seahawks...we actually got a headline, let alone a Breakin News
amazing we beat out the Coles for Moss deal
ADP,
ReplyDeleteDid they say anything more than what I posted? If so could you post the link? I want to read it.
it isn't on the net...it was on the TV channel (ESPNnews channel)...
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch ESPNnews for long, but they didn't give any specifics at the bottom of the screen...however they might do a segment on it
the only thing I saw on the internet about it is here...
Browns | Dilfer Coming Onboard - from www.KFFL.com
ReplyDeleteSat, 5 Mar 2005 15:27:11 -0800
Jay Glazer, of FoxSports.com, reports the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks have agreed in principle on a deal that will send Seahawks QB Trent Dilfer to the Browns in exchange for what is believed to be a fourth- or fifth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. It is also believed the Browns will attempt to re-work Dilfer's current contract.
I heard the news on ESPN radio Sportscenter while I was in the garage. They said he was traded for a "mid-round pick".
To me, that means 4th round.
Did ya know, Ruskell has has great success with 4th round picks?
John Lynch & Ronde Barber come to mind.
oh and forgot to pay my respects...
ReplyDeleteheres hoping Dilfer racks up 3000 yards, and 25 TDs...the man deserves it
ill miss him...and ill never forget 'the run' that I have on tape lol...7 yards, 40 hours
I think we got robbed if we get a 5th rounder or lower...
ReplyDeleteand Cleveland didn't do so well, so technically their 4th rounded is close to a 3rd...
ill love the trade if thats the case...1 round makes the much of a difference
lets just hope they respect him in Cleveland...then again how can you not like that sexy balding head of his :P (im not gay :|)
The story is now on ESPN.com but they are not really reporting anything except that it's a deal in principle that will not fall apart, both sides want it done.
ReplyDeleteThey too are saying a middle round pick seems likely but they're just guessing.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletewe got their 4th ROUND PICK
ReplyDeletenot bad....thats 3rd overall in the 4th round...so technically a 3rd rounder...
nice job Seahawks FO
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2006067
wait it says...we're probably getting the pick they got from Denver...
ReplyDeletenow the trade went down to average for me...
A fourth round pick (essentially a third) combined with the extra money saved under the cap, is a nice deal. Maybe not as big a deal as I had hoped for but still a nice deal, I'll take it.
ReplyDeleteDang it, I posted too quick, I didn't see your last post ADP. Oh well, a fourth still isn't too bad, I really couldn't have expected much more unless Simmons had been involved as I had hoped.
ReplyDeletewell at least we'll get to see what Ruskell is made of, since he has a good history with 4th rounders...combine that with our reputation of 'striking gold'...maybe something great will come of it...
ReplyDeletethe most important thing though, is dumping the salary, and still getting something out of it...a draft pick rather then another player and salary...we didn't need Dilfer anymore as Seneca is good enough for backup duties, and Dilfer had only one year left anyways...now we have 2 4th round picks...
when I look at all of those things, I change my mind...I like this trade, it just made too much sense for both teams
the Broncos pick would be 25th overall in the 4th round...a bit low, its a good trade, but I can't help but wished we got their other 4th rounder...oh well
Man I hope you're right!
ReplyDeleteADP, I believe I have found the answer to your question about how much we saved with this move; about 2.5 million. Now how do you feel about this move? 2.5 is alot of money to add to what we'd already saved by cutting Simmons and Robinson. We started out with about 6 mil after the big resignings, then we saved about 1.5 after the cuts, now about 2.5 after the trade. Unless my math is truly fuzzy, we are now about 10 million under the cap, anyway you look at it, this is a good move. Now we have an extra 4 round pick and are about 10 mil under the cap. BRING ON SURTAIN! Now we can get a guy like Surtain and still do what we need to next season, since we will be saving more money next year from Simmons salary and the cap is scheduled to go up some.
ReplyDeleteThings are looking up!
The Trib is reporting that it WAS the pick the Browns got from Denver! That's even better yet!
ReplyDeleteOOOps! Sorry, that is worse, not better. Still at least it's been confirmed. We still are saving money etc...
ReplyDeletelol yeh its worse...
ReplyDeletebut like I said...after reading what i typed about the trade, I do like it...
the question is...could we afford Surtain, Hartwell...and still maintain the minor self-free agents (Porkchop, Bannister, Tobeck)...
I think its possible...but they need to make a move on Hartwell before its too late...I doubt Derrick Johnson will fall to us, so we need to grab a LB up right now...and maybe someone from the draft to fill the other LB hole
Ya I doubt Johnson gets pat the Vikings at #7.
ReplyDeleteRemember Ruskell's philosophy -- you build a defense from the line of scrimmage back. That means if given a choice, if in a pinch in cap room, he's going to pick Hartwell over Surtain.
ReplyDeleteIf we're at about $10 mil in the cap, and we take out $4 mil for draftees, $6 mil this year I don't think will pick up both of them. In fact, it puts un in a pinch to get a deal done for a DE, whether it be Okeafor or some other dude.
BTW: Who f'd up our margins again?
OK Hawk Fans... time to clear cap room.
ReplyDelete#1 Must sign or trade Shaun Alexander this week. A trade saves us 6 million and the two first rounders, a deal should still save us at least a mil for cap space. I'm thinking savings of $1-2 million.
#2 Must renegotiate Chad Brown's contract. He is a big cap number right not (not sure how big) and we have a bunch of guys we need to sign (Womack and Tobeck come to mind)
#3 As much as we could use a LB, we have Koutovides and Kacsivinski. We should probably try to resign as much as possible (we need to be able to match whatever Bernard is offered too, his draft pick would be useless a 6th I think)
Sorry fellas, but I don't think a UFA LB or CB is in the cards. Hartwell may never make it this far out....
Blue...
ReplyDeletewe have 10 mill to spend now...thats not including the money we're saving for draft picks...the 10 mill is seperate...we had about 6 to spend, then add 4 mill from Simmons, Robinson, and Dilfer...n yeh
plus, I dunno who messed up the margins, I don't know how to prevent them or anyything about them so I couldn't tell you
Ha! It was you @ 5:43, adp! (long string w/ no spaces messes up word wrap)
ReplyDelete$10 mil after draftees sounds a lot better. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteDreamer, I have to agree, that's the most prudent approach. Although personally, I'd lik eto keep SA.
ReplyDeleteDreamer, I understand that we have Kout, but Kaz? He's just a 'Rudy' in the pros.
ReplyDeletewell, Blue, you have no proof it was me...the only post at 5:43 was deleted by some guy...
ReplyDeletebut hey, in the words of Gary Payton: "blame me, ill be the scapegoat"
:P
I think, as I've said in other threads, that White and Lewis could fill the LB hole that was made with Simmons' departure. So Koute can stay on the STs roster wherre he's most valuable.
ReplyDeleteAnd if we can resign Oke and restructure Brown then we really don't need an OLB, we could still use a MLB and a CB to replace Lucas.
Vinny, I hear you but I think just the oppostie is true, that Niko is closer to being ready than White or Lewis and THEY should stay on ST where they belong until they are ready, we should go after Hartwell who is less injury prone than Bell and can be used inside or outside which gives us more versatility should Niko not work out.
ReplyDeleteEither way though, Bell or Harwell, I willl still be happy that the Hawks make a move to upgrade the LB position. I still want to upgrade DE as well and think it is just as important. Okeafor is likely gone, though if we can resign him it would help the depth, but we can easily upgrade that position. Although I would rather go after DE through the draft than in free agency, because the free agent DE's aren't really any better than the one's coming through the draft. Personally I'd like to hear on draft day, "with the 23rd pick of the 2005 draft, the Seahawks select Roth DE Iowa.
Do you honestly think that there's a DE in the draft that could beat out Okeafor for the starting job? Who?
ReplyDeleteAnd I still think that D.D, Lewis is better than any draft pick we could get. And Koute needs to be looked at, but I think he's still too green.
I agree that we need a Quality MLB, I'm just not sure that we'll get one in FA nad if not then we need to get one through the Trading Blocks, because the answer's not in the draft.
And how can you make that determination of Lewis? He didn't play a singl regular season game last year.
ReplyDeleteAnd how can you make that determination of Lewis? He didn't play a singl regular season game last year.
ReplyDeleteExactly, and part of the reason I don't see how you can think he's anywhere near being more ready than a guy who started the last half of last season and played in virtually every game.
And yes, I think that the top five DE's in the draft would all beat out Okeafor for a starting job.
You talked about Alexander dissapeering in big situations (which I still disagree with) but how about Okeafor? When did he ever get a game changing sack? Why was our pass rush non existent on third downs if he's so darn good and played in every single game?
All season we had virtually no pass rush on third downs and the one constant was Okeafor, was is simply too small to get it done when it counts the most. With the new rules targeting contact with the recievers, we NEED to have better line play than we got last year. And Okeafor is a nice player, a better than average player, but that's it. The top five DE's coming out this season all have a good chance to be great players, and except for Merriman are bigger and stronger than Okeafor. Heck, most of them are just as fast or faster too.
Also DD might be better than any draft pick we could get, which is exactly why I want to see the Hawks go after a DE in the draft, not a linebacker. Edgerton Hartwell however is better than Lewis, and so it would be an easy upgrade there. Kndrel Bell is also better than Niko, (if he can stay healthy), but his health is such a big risk that I would rather stay away and just start Niko. If we picked up Hartwell, he can play inside or outside, so if Niko flops, no problem, we just move him inside and start Lewis (who you think is better anyway), if Niko kicks ass (and I think he will) great, then we have Hartwell playing outside with Brown and White and Lewis are the backups. The best of both worlds and we don't need to worry about an injury prone Bell getting hurt again. My plan would upgrade instantly both the line and the linebacker corp.
ReplyDeleteI guess you guys didn't hear...Kendrell Bell supposedly failed a physical for the Giants...
ReplyDeleteim a little scared about him now
from rotoworld.com...early today
You're spending money I don't think we have, however I'm 100% behind ya on Hartwell, but as you said, Bell has not proven to be a sturdy player.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right.
"the word out of Miami over the weekend was that the Seahawks are the leading candidate to pull off a deal for Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain -- although the Seahawks viewpoint is that their interest at this time is closer to curiosity than seriously pursuing a trade."
ReplyDelete"Surtain, who will be 29 in June, wouldn't come cheaply. The Dolphins want a first-day draft choice, preferably a second-round pick, for the former Pro Bowl corner. Plus, any team dealing for Surtain would have to rework or extend his contract, because he has an $8.3 million salary cap number for 2005. Surtain is said to be looking for at least an $8 million signing bonus on any new deal."
and also...
"Defensive end Bryce Fisher, an unrestricted free agent from the St. Louis Rams, is scheduled to visit the Seahawks this week, his agent said. Fisher, who grew up in Renton and went to Seattle Prep, became a starter last season after former Rams teammate Grant Wistrom signed with the Seahawks in free agency. ... Tight end Anthony Becht, an unrestricted free agent from the Jets, has said he is tentatively scheduled to visit the Seahawks -- as well as the 49ers, Steelers and Buccaneers. ... Reports of visits can be misleading, however, since Eagles Pro Bowl middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter told a Philadelphia radio station last week that he planned to visit the Seahawks. No visit was ever scheduled, and Trotter re-signed with the Eagles on Friday."

ReplyDelete"Seattle has expressed interest in trading for Patrick Surtain, but that hasn't kept the Seahawks from pursuing other options at cornerback.
The Tacoma News Tribune reported that ex-Tennessee cornerback Andre Dyson is visiting today with the Seahawks. The Dolphins are thought to be insistent upon receiving a second-round draft choice for Surtain, who is entering the final year of his contract. ..."

im not taking a chance to screw up the margins again cough-blue-cough :P...so go dig up the info yourselves...
anyways, how do you guys feel about Andre Dyson?
