While I agree that the pass rush should be our main priority, I am not opposed to getting someone like Surtain in a trade. Every piece helps the whole. Otherwise I agree and think you make very good points shonuff. Good post!
I just can't believe that the Hawks are seriously considering A train as a decent alternative should Alexander hold out. I would much rather go with Morris and Carter as our options! I also cannot understand why the Hawks are preparing for a holdout at all, if he does holdout then trade his sorry ass! Alexander simply has no position to holdout on, he is far too replaceable to be holding out. You guys know that Ilove the guy and have defended him in the past, but if he holds out or even looks like he will, then get what you can for him and be done with it. Have you guys seen the number of very good college RB's available in the draft? There are TONS of players who we can get as late as the third round who could immediately start for us. Alexander is being very thinck headed if he thinks he can't very easily be replaced.
Darn it, now I'm starting to sound like Vinny! But honestly, if he does in fact decide to holdout, then I am completely in Vinny's camp on this. Completely. For one thing trading Alexander would give us a good draft pick, for another we would save a ton of money. I would much rather play him then trade him, but if he's not going to play, then get someone who will.
I really like the idea of Marion Barber in the third round should we decide to trade ALexander. I know that most of the country doesn't know alot about Barber, but trust me, he would be the biggest steal of the entire draft if he falls into the third round. He is very very fast, and does all the little things well. He also has a natural ability for making people miss. Hell, I'd take him in hte third even if we still have Alexander, just because of his value there.
This just proves my point about Alexander's inflated opinion of himself and his talent, he's said all along that he's an ELITE Halfback, high scoring, stat padding HB yes, but an elite must have HB? I doubt it.
Doesn't seem to me many teams are banging on the door trying to get a shot at him.
Has anyone heard anything about any teams talking to teh Hawks about him?
And Sho, as I said in another thread what's wrong with pursuing players other than your' pass rusher. And as I also said..... Lucas took Taylor's spot because he was better, Lucas played well last year but still made mistakes that showed why he never beat out Springs for the job.
Now that tells me that Sutain would be a big upgrade at the CB position, and I'm pretty sure that out pass coverage was rather suspect last season.
Well, you're partly right Vinny. I agree that it's always wise to keep your options open and to look at several different positions; however, I also think that if we upgrade the pass rush the secondary will have less pressure on them and will do better as a result. Therefore pass rush should be the priority if you believe as Ruskell (and I do) that a defense should be built front to back.
Also, you've never been right about Alexander and you never will, because you see it the way you want to not the way it actually went. The numbers prove you're wrong but you discount them out of hand. I don't understand how you can so conveniently forget how bad our passing game was for the first three quarters of the season and how we had to rely so heavily on our run game. Funny, but we were at our best when we ran the damn ball all season. When we were at our worst, Holmgren was trying to force the pass, resulting in picks and many many drops. Alexander however, only led the league in yards and touchdowns. Ya, you're right Vinny, he sucks. I suppose the fact that the price/compensation for Alexander has nothing to do with why teams aren't breaking down the door to get him either huh? Dude, you just don't get it.
BTW Vinny, I don't see teams busting down the door for Edgerin James either, does he suck too? Or maybe it's that franchise tag that's scaring teams off huh? Your logic is so flawed and your memory of actual events so foggy I'm not sure how to even refute your arguments anymore. Especially when you simply ignore the only true measuring stick of a players talents, statistics. You have found a way to make all your arguments circular so that in your mind you can never be proven wrong. You discount stats, say that it was our great line that really made the great numbers anyway, throw out all of the years of consistent greatness he has had here, and keep repeating the mantra that he can't block and he can't catch so that his actual performance means nothing to you. You conveniently forget the FACT that our passing game stunk for most of last year, forcing us to rely on the run game. You also forget that we won when we ran the ball effectively but lost when we tried to throw too often. I could go on and on but what's the point. Nothing anyone says, no amount of VALID stats and arguments can persuade you because your mind is made up. You remind me of the saying, I've made up my mind, don't conduse me with the facts. You should really look up the logic fallacy called circular reasoning, it describes all of your arguments perfectly. The stats say you're wrong the experts say you're wrong, other players say you're wrong, hell everyone I've ever talked to says you're wrong, but I guess you are the only person in the world that knows anything about talent. You're right and everyone else is wrong. You should revisit the articles about the probowl relating to how hard McNabb was trying to talk Alexander into becoming an Eagle. Guess Donovan knows nothing about football too huh?
I agree with you shonuff, about the pass rush being more important than coverage. After all, no CB in the league can stay with a WR at all angles enlessly. The pass rush needs to get to the QB to end the play.
I don't believe in that principle to the degree that you do, however. Sometimes you get coverage sacks because the DB's did such a good job.
I guess what I'm saying is that a good cornerback is still a big asset to the team. I just think that pass rushers are MORE important, and if it's done effectively in can make up for an average DB. The other way around is somewhere between difficult and impossible.
News on Jason Taylor, word out of Miami is that they will NOT be trading him, that Kevin Carter will be used as a DT meaning that their D-Line, when in a 3-4 is Taylor, Carter, and Holliday. Pretty tough.

That should have been price/compensation is very high.

ReplyDelete**UGH** I hope someday other fans say that about our defensive line.
ReplyDeletei thought they might last year. Chike, Tubbs, Woodard and Grant, not a bad line up.
ReplyDeleteAm I mistaken, or don't you need talented LBs to make the 3-4 work?
ReplyDeleteAnd wouldn't you be asking the entire front seven to start from scratch? (the entire front seven, none of whom have played in a 3-4 set)
Wouldn't we be starting all over?
No thanks!
