Getting Sharper, Making Cuts

In the midst of the silver lining that comes with acquiring Jamie Sharper, there remains a cloud. In order to make the salary commitment to him, other players will either have to take a pay cut, or turn in their helmet and playbook.

Maybe you noticed that we have only agreed to terms with Sharper. With a mere $300K in available cap space at this point, with much of that dedicated to off-season workout bonuses, the league will never rubber stamp an actual contract containing the agreed terms. In other words, we cannot actually sign Sharper until room is made under the cap.

Which bring us to the main idea of this post: Who takes the punch in the gut?

Chad Brown is the most likely victim of attrition. With $4.2 million due to him this season, his recent reputation for injury, and 35 years of wear and tear breathing down his neck, the Seahawks have reportedly asked him to restructure significantly, offering him a $1 million contact for the coming season, which he has thus far rejected. Cutting Chad now would save $2,366,664. Waiting until June 1 will save the full $4.2 mil. But the way the current administration is playing hardball with him, it looks like he's the one that's going to make room for Sharper.

Bobby Taylor is another injury-prone man on the bubble (It's hard to even find pictures of him in Seahawks blue). There are doubts as to how his knee will make it through the season. When training camp starts, we should have a good idea if it's going to hold up. Cutting Bobby now would save $500,000. After June 1, the cap savings will be $2 million. The leads me to believe that he will be cut in order to sign our rookies.

Koren Robinson has been a fan favorite for the cutting room floor, thanks to his off the field antics and on the field drops. Eliminating him now would save almost nothing. Waiting until June 1 will save $1.3 million. Depending on who we pick in the draft, he may be dropping balls for someone else this summer.

Another question mark belongs at the end of a sentence containing Antonio Cochran. He's a very average defensive end, but since we are possibly upgrading at that position in the draft, he may be considered an overpriced backup and a candidate for deletion. Dropping him now would save $1.25 million, and $2 million after June 1.

I tried to get all the information I could about this subject. It seems to me that Chad will be first to go, to make room for Sharper, unless of course he suddenly agrees to the $1 mil contract. Unless something drastic happens, Taylor, Cochran and Robinson will be gone in June, if at all.

What do you think?

  1. You know, I get the feeling that except for Koren Robinson (who for some reason Homgren likes and defends) all of those names will be cut unless they take a pay cut or otherwise restructure. Remember that we have 10 picks in this years draft, there's no doubt that we will be needing as much money available as possible. Also keep in mind that there are still free agents out there (and soon there will be more) who can help us, such as Dyson, who has indeed talked to the team. I think that before all is said and done this team may get an even more extreme makeover, and I believe that it needs it! Underachieving should not and apparently willnot be tolerated under the Ruskell regime.

  2. I'm hoping the cut is Taylor, the a restructuring of Wistroma nd Brown's contracts should free up enough money to get the job done.

I really don't think that Brown's the liability you all seem to think he is. He just needs to figure out that he's hurting the team by not restructuring.

Brown is the best reader of offneses and QBs we have, or that's available.

I'm just throwing this in here as a counterpoint to the negatives pointed out here.

  3. That's what I like about you Vinny! Disagreement makes the best product.

  4. Brown's productivity is the problem. If he's reading defenses from the sidelines, he's just an overpriced linebacker coach.

  5. New conditioning Coach, better guys around him, and a smaller role (pass rush specialist?) would add up to a far more productive season for Chad. I'm still confused as to how folks can blame him for a broken bone.

Then he missed two game the season before that(not bad), and 8 games in '02, but prior to that he'd missed only 10 games in the previous 9 seasons. I think he's just had some bad luck recently.

  6. Vin, I agree that he has had some rather bad luck lately, but don't forget that he's now 35 (an age which I know all about) and it's very unlikely that at his age his luck will change. I just think that he's nearing the end of his career and no longer worth the money he's being paid. When he's healthy though, he's still the best linebacker we have, Sharper or no. If he restructures I would love to keep this great player and great leader, if not, then we have to look to the good of the team.

  7. I'm not blaming him for a broken bone. I'm just relating the fact that durability affects value, period. Someone with a better a record of playing time vs. a record of injury is always goiing to be worth more. I didn't create that principle, it's just a fact of life. It's not anybody's fault. Not Brown's OR management's.

  8. Believe it or not, I have to back Vinny on this one. I think that as a pass rush specialist, Brown is still very valuable. The great thing about having Sharper is that even with Brown on the side line, we have one premier LB on the field at all times. If we can get the other guys to pull a little weight, and rotate people in to get Chad some rest, I think our LB corps is looking very strong.

  9. I thought that by the end of last night, we would know whats going on with Brown...the longer it takes before we hear that hes cut, the more likely he wont be

  10. if we keep Brown...I doubt we would go LB in the first round (either DE for pass rush, or CB)

I cant remember which one, but one of the DEs is starting to draw comparison to Dwight Freeney (and he was on the mock draft as our pick)

could you imagine having a Dwight Freeney for pass rush?

  11. I think our first pick is going to be a DE. And yes, I can imagine Dwight Freeny on our line. But then I'd have to take the rest of the day off because I'd get nothing done.
