I know we're all anxious to hear what our Hawks are doing in free agency, but I thought we should have a thread dedicated to the things the other 31 teams are doing. And to start it off, we have this:
Dexter Coakley is going to sign a 5 year contract with the Rams.
This doesn't make me happy. I did NOT want to face this guy twice a season.
Damn double damn! Coakley is exactly the kind of LB we need here, I really hate seeing him go to the Rams! DAMN!
ReplyDeleteI figured that after cutting Simmons maybe we could make a run at Coakley, he's so tuff and fast and football smart. Crap! Opportunity missed.
Aaaarrrgh!!! That guy is small, but makes a lot of tackles.
ReplyDeleteI hope they're overpaying him.
Man I hate the Rams!
ReplyDelete"reportedly" 5 year, 14.5 million including a 3 million signing bonus. Cap hit for next season is 4.0 million.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I like Coakley, but I think we need a more physical specimen on out team. We already have enough undersized players on our front seven. I want to see a hammer stuffer in there.
ReplyDeletePlus, I think his best years are behind him.
I somewhat agree with you on that, but I didn't want him to go to anyone in our division.

ReplyDeleteI scratched my last two comments, because they were about a small signing that didn't matter. I realized that if every signing was reported in this blog, it would soon be 3,000 comments long, not what we want. So we should keep this to big names only.
ReplyDeleteBluefoot, you MAY be right about his best years being behind him, but I disagree with your opinion about his size. True he is the smallest LB in the NFL, but have you ever watched that guy hit? He hits like Steve Atwater, runs fast and is always in the right position. He made the probowl three straight years because he plays like a much bigger guy. He hits as hard as any LBer in the game, he's brutal.
ReplyDeleteRats. Not what I wanted to hear.
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't watched him THAT much. How is he at fighting off blocks?
Also: Wasn't Atwater a safety?
Mason just signed with the Ravens.
ReplyDeleteYes Altwater was a safety, I wasn't making a position comparison, just using Atwater as the watermark for players who hit hard. Coakley can do it all well, he sheds blocks very well for someone his size because he uses his speed and hands well, he also has been a good pass rusher, he's very disruptive, even if he doesn't get the sack. Best is his sideline to sideline speed though, and his natural instincts, he's football smart which is why he made it in the NFL despite being the games smallest LB.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we can pull off another Wistrom type of thing where we steal one of the Rams better players, both helping us and hurting them. Polley is a good linebacker, he is as talented as Claiborn with less injury issues.
ReplyDeleteJeremiah Trotter is in Kansas City today, will probably sign.
ReplyDeleteI don't like all this news in the other team's thread and none in ours.
I know, be patient, be patient.
Former Ravens center Casey Rabach is out of the picture as a replacement for Tobeck. He signed with the 'Skins.
ReplyDeleteI don't get why people sign so fast...its been 20 hours since free agency opened, and already people are signing...
ReplyDeletethe Rams are a bunch of losers anyways, they're over the hill, and although it didn't catch up with them last year, it will this year...old farts
sorry, I just hate the Rams...with their poopy yellow colors
I wouldn't mind Ian Gold at all...but we're not guaranteed anything, I think Seattle is too busy with Lucas that they will miss out on the stupid bunch of FAs who sign on the first day, and the stupid teams who overpay them
its not like they can just go sign some FAs, n then find themselves with not enough money to re-sign Lucas
if we see anything, it will be Lucas...but who knows
sorry, but im just a little ticked that two favorite players (Alexander and Simmons) might leave the team
This could always happen...the Hawks don't find a LB better tahn Siommons, and Simmons doesn't find a team that he wants to play on that will pay him what he wants. So he winds up back in Seattle with a better contract than the one he had. (Better for both sides)
ReplyDeleteHey why not? Teams do it all the time.
Two big signings overnight, Lamont Jordan to the Raiders, and Pat Williams to the Vikings.
ReplyDeletePat was a player I wouldn't have minded seeing in Seahawk blue, but didn't want to spend a ton of money on him.
Hurry up and get Lucas signed!!!
Other big names:
ReplyDeleteJason Ferguson, former Jet DT, signed with the Cowboys, along with Anthony Henry, former Browns CB. This helps us out HUGE. The Boys were the biggest reported suitor of Ken Lucas, and by signing a CB and spending big bucks on a DT, they won't be able to afford Ken. Good news for the Hawks.
Antonio Pierce, a Skins LB that I liked if he came cheap, signed with the Giants. That D could be very good next year.
Joe Andruzzi, a tough OL from NE, signed with the Browns, not a big surprise.
The 49ers, in my opinion, overpaid for Jonas Jennings, a LT that will improve their line, but not $5 million a year worth.
And finally, Duane Starks, a pretty good, but often injured corner was traded to the Patriots for a third round pick. He'll give them a little leadership, if he can stay on the field.
Conspicously absent from this list are our Hawks. GET SOMETHING DONE PLEASE?!?!
Everything seems to going wrong so far, Lucas is getting whined and dined by the Panthers and it looks bad for us resigning him. Okeafor hasn't gotten much attention yet but I really don't care because Lucas is a much bigger priority.
ReplyDeleteRight now the two guys I would target are Kevin Carter, and Ed Hartwell. I haven't heard about anyone visiting Seattle, has anyone heard any rumors? Or is it just that no one is coming here?
This is exactly why I was worried that the FO took so long to get itself righted, now it looks like we are going to lose Lucas and so far it doesn't look like we'll be getting anyone. This is what happens when the FO is a mess for so long, the team ends up starting so far behind everyone else. This offseason looks bad just like I predicted it would be and I am NOT happy about it.
I still don't understand cutting Simmons when there seems to be no backup plan, and the money actually saved is next to nothing. Now the team needs even more in free agency but it looks like we're getting nothing. Unless something happens soon, we'll be taking a big step backwards.
BTW, I have heard several rumors that Anquan Boldin is very unhappy in Arizona, I know that our biggest needs are on defense but it sure would be nice to see the Hawks work out a trade for Boldin. Not going to happen but wouldn't it be nice.
Just heard on the radio that Orlando Huff and Itulu Mili are both scheduled to be in Phoenix today talking to the cardinals.
ReplyDeleteLB Ian Gold is signing with the Broncos.
ReplyDeletePhht. >:P
One big signing last night. Chris Claiborne to the Rams. As of now, they have Polley, Claiborne, and Coakley as their backers. Not a pleasant thought.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like they're trying to match up to Shaun, like we had Simmons to deal with Faulk.
ReplyDeleteThey need the help, their run D is almost as bad as ours.
Actually I think their run D last season was worse than ours, they couldn't stop anyone.
ReplyDeleteCount Trotter out, he's resigned with the Eagles, it's official.
