Simmons to be Cut?

Quote from John Clayton on ESPN.com:

March 1, 2005
Seahawks sending Simmons packing?
The Seahawks are considering cutting outside linebacker Anthony Simmons. Even though Simmons is considered one of their best play-makers on defense, the team has tired of his long struggles with injuries. A couple of years ago, Simmons had 4.4 speed, and he still is fast. They loved him in a division that featured Marshall Faulk because Simmons had the ability to cover him. Now, the Seahawks think he is overpaid and want to move a different direction. He has a $500,000 roster bonus due by March 7.

If he's overpaid on account of injuries, what is to be thought of Chad Brown? It seems Simmons has played more games of late and has more left in the tank than Chad.

This just doesn't ring true. What do you think?

  1. Agreed. In the last 48 games, Chad has played in 29, Simmons in 27. It's an understandable business decision.

Other players under contract but on the chopping block, IMHO:

    Damien Robinson, Bobby Taylor

    On the bubble:

    Koren Robinson, Jerramy Stevens

  2. I hate this...because I love Anthony, but his injuries do limit him...

I say cut whoever costs more between him and Chad Brown

actually, cut Chad Brown...they're both injury prone, but Brown is older, and I think at this stage, when healthy, Anthony is better

  3. I have a question, how often have the guys at ESPN been right about anything they printed about the Hawks?

  4. well Vinny, just like Peter Gammons predicting the Red Sox would win the World Series the last 4000 years, they gotta be right eventually (albeit by luck) :P

to be honest, I doubt Stevens will be cut, because he showed improvement last year...and I definitely don't think K Rob will be cut, and probably not even traded, simply because they went through hell trying to help him, and they probably want to see if it paid off (rehab from alcohol/drug abuse)...they probably want to see if they can salvage his talents before he loses them for good (potential he still has, but hasn't grasped yet)

  5. I heard that about Pryce, too. He's a four time pro-bowler, but he's damaged goods. He missed 14 games from back surgery, and that is a very hard thing for a big man in the DE/DT position to recover from. I could see him releiving as a pass rusher, but I don't know as an every down player.

BTW: Restructuring Chad and Anthony would be because they are flat overpriced, not because we are making room for anyone specific, IMO.

  6. OK, to be the arguementative manic I am, I'll ask the guestion......Who do we replace our best LBs/pass rushers with?

It's easy to say they need to go, but who do we get to fill those rather large cleates?

  8. Just to clear up my recent ramblings.....again sorry about the manic posts (the Victims know who they are).......

S.A.'s probably gone.(for better or worse)

We need to get Lucas and Okeafor back.

Let Taylor and the other Robinson go to free up some more cap money.

Re-negotiate a few contracts to free up more money.

Dump a couple more pieces of dead wood by trade if possible.(Gray,Bates, etc.)

We need to get a couple of pass rushing defenders and a badass MLB(through draft or FA)

We need to get a WR to challenge the 'Droppsy Boys' (Again through draft or FA)

We need to get our guys in condition. (NO MORE INJURY EPIDEMICS)

And they need to shut up all the critics out there. Catch the ball, pick up the short third downs, stop the run and kill the QBs, I beleive we get Vick again don't we? Manning too! I can't wait! :)

Uh Oh! Mania's setting in. Better go!

    Anyway that's my to-do list.

  10. Sho, calm down! (take a pill, the little pnk one's work the best)

I agree on the injury thing, however you're wrong about the youth and inexperience thing, we got beatten up the middle last year because we had young LBs taking bad angles to the ball, and blowing tackles by overplaying the play.

I don't know of 'any' team that restructured an entire group of players that succeeded in the NFL, name me two. Name me one.

I'd much rather see an experienced player making the defensive adjustment calls on teh field and that usually falls to the MLB. He's our defensiv QB, and to have a rookie in there is a dumb move, and to surround him with mor rookies and first year players is borderline psychotic.

How many rookies and second year players were on the Pats and Eagles defenses? Pittsburgs? The Rams? Do some homework.
